Chapter 39 — Blanco's Price

◽At The Beach◽
Devon, stood before the massive crowd gathered on the beach.
【I leave him alone for a few days, and this happens.】 He walked past the onlookers and stood in front of the shark carcass. 「So, JJ, how big is it?」JJ, currently stripping the meat, replied easily. 「Eighty meters.」「Anything else?」「Well, Big Bro, it’s a Megalodon and a Dunkleosteus hybrid with a jaw strength that would’ve made a T-Rex blush. And it was built to kill.」Devon nodded in acknowledgment. 「Hmm... That’s crazy. Cool, but crazy.」JJ chuckled. 「Quit the small talk, Big Bro. So what did they say?」「They wanted to use the Geneva Convention, the laws against you, and the laws about animal abuse.」「And what did you say?」「Well, I pointed out you weren’t the aggressor, you didn’t break any laws, and if this is 'animal abuse,' then what about the guy who made them sharks like this?」JJ laughed out loud. 「Let me guess, those hypocrites said it didn't matter?」Devon chuckled. 「They tried to.」 He jumped on top of the Megalodon carcass, rolling up his sleeves. 「But I told 'em, the Emperor was really eager for a fight if they didn't call it what it is—and that’s an attack on a Militian Official.」「I see. And thanks for covering that for me, Big Bro.」「Don’t worry about it. Besides, you'd do the same for me, right?」「Of course.」Joshua, busy with his work, called out. 「You gonna work or not, Big Bro Devon?」「Sure.」 Devon took the machete Joshua offered. 「Thanks, Josh.」 He immediately started helping them butcher the giant shark.
In a seaside cafe nearby, Yulia watched the three brothers working on the carcass.
「Now that’s a rare sight.」Mei looked confused. 「It is?」「Yes. It’s rare to see those three doing something together that isn’t related to fighting or warfare.」Harumi frowned. 「So, you’re saying they never get peace?」「Individually, no. But together, yes.」「Oh, I see.」 Harumi looked at Joshua. 「So, Ms. Kuznetsov—」「It's okay to call me Yulia.」「Okay, Yulia, I have a question.」「Sure, you can ask me.」「Um... Do the three of them actually hate the NWO?」Yulia’s expression hardened slightly. 「Yes. As a matter of fact, the whole of Militia hates the NWO.」「But why, though? The NWO has helped so many people around the world!」「I see. Harumi, if you had medicine that could kill the cancer cells in a person with cancer, and over time it would make them healthy, would you give it to the select few who can pay, or everyone?」「Um... I’d give it to everyone and make it public.」Yulia leaned in, her voice serious. 「Congrats. You gave up your power to a medical association that will make sure that your formula never makes it to the help who truly need it because they'll put a high paywall on it. And that’s one of the few things the NWO does, too.」Harumi was shocked. 「R-really? But th-that can't be!」Mei nodded grimly. 「It’s true, Harumi. I saw it firsthand.」「You did?」「Well, no, but it's just... when General Liu saw Cain, he was fearful. It seemed instinctual. But he wasn't scared of Nikolai...」 She sighed. 「I can't put it into words.」Yulia explained further. 「When you pose more than a threat to them, they’ll kiss your ass. If you can buy them off, they’ll kiss your ass. But if you can't stuff their pockets, they think nothing of you.」「Um... Yeah, something like that.」Mei said a bit perplexed.Harumi asked cautiously. 「So are you saying that the NWO only serves itself and its partners?」「Yes, that's the reason. Did you ever find it weird they want a country to pay them to receive help?」Harumi gasped. 「I always thought it was donations!」「Well, depending on when you say you got paid, will it determine if it was extortion or a donation. But also, war is more profitable than peace.」Harumi sat in shocked disbelief. 「I never suspected it was like that.」「If you don't believe me, you can look at JJ and Devon, since they were the NWO's and friends' past investment that blew up in their faces.」Harumi gave a sad chuckle. 「Is that the truth?」「Yes. Jack Adams was asked if he could make superhumans. He said he could, and the rest is history.」Mei gasped. 「What type of person could do that to their family?!」Yulia took a sip of her water. 「Well, something that isn't human, that's for sure.」Mei calmed herself. 「You're right. So how long will you guys be staying this time?」「We're leaving when JJ is done stripping that Meg over there. But then Aunt Jasmine and Uncle Anthony will be here to check on JJ.」「That's good to hear.」Harumi added, 「Yeah, JJ-senpai tends to be hard to deal with when he gets bored...」Mei chuckled. 「Isn't that the truth?」Yulia giggled. 「Thanks for dealing with his childish shit. But you two, tell me more about your relationships dating a Samuels brother...」 Harumi and Mei immediately blushed.◽At Sayo's Apartment building◽
Sayo sat nervously in her living room, facing Rachel and Esther. 「Um... So what brings you two here?」Rachel, with a playful smile, examined her. 「So this is the one Blanco chose.」Esther commented drily. 「Yeah, and she's just as mentally messed up as him.」Rachel nodded. 「Oh, I see, I see.」 She continued examining her. 「She certainly looks breed-able.」Sayo was nervous. 「Err, um, I can hear the both of you, you know that right?」Rachel shrugged. 「Well, we have nothing to hide from you, right?」「Um... I guess.」Esther sighed, sliding an envelope across the table to Sayo. 「Look. It's best if you see these.」Sayo opened the envelope, and her expression instantly grew horrified. 「Are you guys watching me?!」Rachel scoffed. 「Tch, don't compare us to the likes of the NWO. But you know what this means, right?」Sayo shook her head, terrified. 「No, I don't.」Rachel rolled her eyes. 「The father of your baby—that being our arrogant ass of a little brother, Blanco—has been leaked to the enemy. So we have to ask some questions. Did you tell anyone?」「No, I didn't.」「Did you make contact in any shape or form with JJ or Blanco?」「No. I only went to work and came back home from the hospital when my shift was over.」「Do any of the other nurses know who the dad is, or do any of them hold a grudge against you to do something like this?」「No, they don't. And I mostly keep to myself when I'm not doing my rounds.」Rachel considered this. 「I see.」 She put a photo on the table. 「Do you know this woman?」Sayo studied the photo. 「Yeah, she's the new nurse who started working there when I came back from Militia. Now that I recall, she's the only one who has been truly interested in my pregnancy when I let a few people at the hospital know.」Esther eyed her with suspicion. 「Oh, don't worry, I didn't mention Blanco!」Rachel smiled tightly. 「Okay, she was interested how?」「She wanted to know who the father was and what he was like.」
Esther received a message through her earpiece, instantly standing up. She drew her Nex-042 handgun, her eyes deadly serious.
「Rachel!」Rachel giggled, drawing her own handgun and aiming it at the door. 「How many of them are coming?」「Twenty!」「Alright.」 Rachel looked at Sayo, a playful smile tugging at her lips. 「Get your passport and ID!」Sayo, though scared, instantly understood the urgency. 「Okay!」 She rushed to follow the instruction.「So, Esther, when was the last time we did something like this?」「It was a few years ago, but you're not rusty, are you?」Rachel gave a playful laugh. 「Heavens!」
When Sayo came back, Esther and Rachel had emptied a magazine each, firing through the door. They quickly reloaded and waited.
Rachel: 「Phew. How many bodies dropped?」Esther: 「We got four. Tch. This is what I hate about closed quarters.」Rachel: 「I hear you.」 She giggled. 「Sayo!」Sayo stammered. 「Y-yeah?」
Esther prepared a concussion grenade
Rachel: 「Could you stay in your room till we call you?」 Sayo nodded and quickly retreated.
NWO Agent#01 outside the apartment whispered. 「Why don't we shoot back?」NWO Agent#02: 「We can't. We might end up killing the target if we shoot blindly.」NWO Agent#03: 「Fuck!」
The concussion grenade rolled through the open doorway.
