Chapter 4:
DAYS GONE
Hours earlier, Eastern Shibuya
Kira’s POV:
The wind dragged sand through the ruined streets.
Kira stood in the middle of the cracked avenue, gripping the strap of her backpack like it could keep her safe.
Her messy black hair fell into her eyes, unpractical, and she stumbled over a broken piece of sidewalk.
The city was silent. Too silent.
She had no idea where to go. No idea what was waiting. Every instinct screamed at her to run, but she didn’t know where.
A shadow moved far down the avenue. Kira froze. Her hands shook as she clutched the backpack tighter.
She had survived this far mostly by luck, and her luck was about to run out.
Kira took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She moved forward, each step heavy, but she couldn’t stop. Not yet.
At the edge of a ruined intersection, she squinted into the distance.
The towers of Shibuya Scramble Square jutted into the sky, one of the few landmarks she remembered from before the world went silent.
Maybe she could hide there for a while, gather her thoughts, figure out what to do next.
Every step toward the skyscraper felt heavier than the last. Her boots scuffed against broken glass and crumbling concrete.
She kept her eyes low, watching for movement, but the city remained eerily still.
Finally, she ducked behind a fallen sign near the base of the tower.
From this vantage, she could see the lobby windows mostly shattered but maybe it was enough to keep her out of sight for now.
Her hands shook as she rested against the cold metal.
Liam’s POV:
Liam crouched behind a burnt out van a few streets away. The same skyscraper loomed above the skyline.
He paused, listening to the wind whistle through the ruined streets. No movement but something told him someone else might be heading that way.
His instincts were rarely wrong.
Step by step, he moved closer, using debris for cover.
Each broken street sign and overturned car was a potential hiding spot for him or for someone else.
At the base of the tower, he spotted her first: a shadow pressed against a metal sign. Small, careful, tense. Inexperienced.
Kira stiffened when she noticed movement in the corner of her eye. She held her breath.
Please don’t see me… please don’t see me…
Liam froze behind the debris, studying her. She didn’t look dangerous not yet but appearances could be deceiving.
Slowly, he stepped into the light, hands visible.
“Hey,” he called quietly, voice calm but firm. “I don’t mean any harm. Are you… alone?”
Kira’s heart hammered. She wasn’t sure whether to run or trust him. Her voice came out as a whisper:
“Y-yes… I’m alone.”
Liam nodded slightly.
“Alright. Stay still. We can talk, but carefully. This city… it’s not safe for anyone right now.”
Kira glanced at him, unsure if she should believe him. Yet something in his stance the way he observed without rushing made her pause.
For the first time that day, she didn’t feel completely exposed.
“I’m Kira,” she said finally.
“Liam,” he replied, calm and reassuring. “We need to keep moving soon.
The smoke over there,it could be trouble. Or… survivors. Either way, we should check it out.”
Kira’s stomach twisted. She had been alone for so long.
Now, with someone moving alongside her, the city felt a little less empty but not less dangerous.
They moved together, sticking to shadows, hopping over fallen signs and cracked pavement.
Dust and debris clouded the air, and the faint groans of the undead echoed somewhere far below.
Every step made her acutely aware of how exposed they were.
Hours or maybe minutes passed as they crept toward the source of the smoke. The column of gray twisted above the ruined skyline, a silent warning.
Kira tried to steady her breathing, but every snap of rubble underfoot made her flinch. Liam moved ahead slightly, scanning constantly, and she followed his lead, trusting his instincts.
Finally, at the edge of an overturned vehicle, Kira spotted movement across the rooftops: two figures, deliberate and precise, gliding from one beam to another with calm efficiency.
One tall, one smaller. Her stomach tightened. Who are they? Survivors or something worse?
Liam whispered, “Stay low. Let’s see what they do.”
The taller one’s voice carried down first.
“Hey. Don’t move. We’re not here to hurt you.”
Kira froze. Her voice caught in her throat. “W-we’re… alone,” she stammered.
The smaller figure stepped forward, hands raised but visible. “Alright. We can talk. Slowly. Don’t make sudden movements,” she said.
Kira felt the tension in her shoulders loosen slightly. Every step they had taken, every cautious movement, had led them here.
Slowly, she and Liam stepped from behind the vehicle, careful and deliberate. Boots scuffed against broken concrete, dust rising with each move.
The taller one’s eyes swept over them, measuring, calculating. “Good. Step closer.
Slowly.
We can talk, but carefully.”
Liam relaxed slightly, posture still cautious but no longer rigid.
Kira noticed the smaller figure’s precise movements, the calm in her stance. They were experienced. They weren’t here to attack.
“Why are you out here alone?” the smaller one asked, voice calm but assessing.
“Luck… mostly luck,” Kira whispered, cheeks burning.
The taller one’s lips twitched in a faint, unreadable smile.
“Luck only gets you so far,” he said, voice steady.
“Stick close. Watch us move,it’ll keep you safer.”
Kira exhaled, a thread of hope threading through her chest. Liam let out a quiet breath beside her.
They weren’t alone anymore.
The ruined streets stretched endlessly around them broken asphalt, shattered glass, hollowed buildings.
The taller figure extended a hand slightly, voice steady. “I’m Eli, and this is Ava,” he said.
Ava gave a small nod, her gaze calm but sharp.
“We’ve been watching the smoke too,” she added.
“Looks like our paths are about to cross.”
Kira swallowed, tightening her grip on her backpack.
Liam shifted slightly beside her. They had finally met the people they hadn’t dared hope were out there.
