Chapter 4

The Flower That Made Me Remember You

Then her pure white color gains red and blue colors. Alice knew she was the one who continuously transformed the place with her wishes, filling it with flowers, green grass, trees, and other plants always in bloom. Everything else inside the house belonged to the doctors and scientists: test papers and tools. Alice, floating on top of the pond, felt the water beneath her as light shone down. “What is the meaning of being human?” She wondered aloud, but no one answered.

“Do I count as ‌human?” Alice said, “I heard the doctor and scientists say being a human is bleeding, breathing, and feeling.” Alice then closes her eyes to pass the time. In the beginning, Ray wondered: why was he so nice to her? Was it her charm that influenced him? Or was it simply that she was the only one who had ever shown him gentleness and care?

He also saw how useless she was always dizzy and not knowing anything was another reason he felt compelled to care for her. Alice heard one one of them, the doctor and scientist said, “We brought you here to help you. We just need to do a little test.” Ray challenged, “You think you can help us? It’s a curse. How can you get rid of it? Aren’t there consequences?” Ray spoke to them like that made them irritated and made them beat him. Panic in Alice's chest as she saw a glint of metal in the doctor's hand while Ray’s lying on the ground.

Without a moment's thought, she jumped forward, her small hand surprisingly strong as she pulled the heavy gun from their grasp. It resists in her hands when the shot rings in the room. The doctor closest to Ray tumbled to the floor, a dark stain blooming on the white floor. The remaining doctor and scientists froze, their faces a mixture of shock and fear. Alice pointed the gun at them, her eyes determined.

Though her fighter hovered over the trigger, the instinct to protect Ray stopped her from firing again. Instead, her gaze flickers to Ray, still bruised and bleeding on the floor. When it was all clear, her focus shifted entirely to him, and she rushed to his side. Gently placing his head on her lap, her earlier aggression replaced by childlike concern. Ray's red eyes showed him dying from a gunshot, but someone would see him get shot.
