Chapter 94:
Want to live? Level up
Chapter 93 — Defense of the Wall (Part 3)
After finding a place where no one would see me, I teleported into the Training Room.
At the same time, I decided to get a little rest.
A little… Well, not exactly little—a full sleep. Eight hours. Maybe even all twelve. I didn’t have a clock, so I just slept until I felt completely rested. I had more than enough time here.
After that, I ate a little and returned to the wall.
Of course, not immediately.
It would have been strange if I disappeared and then came back five minutes later already washed and clean. So I simply walked around the city for about half an hour and only then headed back to the wall.
In the distance, I noticed monsters already approaching.
Good. I’m just in time.
Apparently, many people still hadn’t noticed them yet—there was no movement on the wall.
Well, yeah… my eyesight is much better than most people’s now.
"Prepare yourselves! The monsters are advancing!" someone’s voice rang out.
Oh, finally someone noticed.
But whatever. Most of those monsters will still be ours anyway.
Rem’s golems were still standing in position. Sherial had apparently already restored her mana.
"Going to fight like a maniac again this time?" Sherial asked.
"Yeah. I don’t have any ranged attacks, so I don’t really have much choice. Besides, I’m only a little away from the next level," I replied.
"This time, don’t go too far. These monsters will be much stronger," she said.
"Yeah, I’ll be careful," I replied.
Of course, it was nice that she was worried about me.
Alright…
My prey… I mean, the monsters… no, my experience points are already very close.
Why are they so slow?..
Though no. They’re much faster than fourth-rank monsters.
But my patience was already running out.
I simply jumped off the wall and started moving slowly toward them.
I wasn’t planning to go far.
But I didn’t want to just stand on the wall and wait either.
Just a few more seconds—and the battle would begin.
Suddenly, I noticed a flash in the sky and looked up.
Damn… Sherial decided to get ahead of me.
I dashed forward at maximum speed.
And I still made it in time.
[Dungeon monster defeated: Abyssal Treant (Lv. 123)]
[Received: +71,680,160 experience points]
I killed the first monster—right before Sherial’s rain of arrows crashed down onto the crowd of monsters.
Something surprising happened.
It seems that this time, I won’t lose to Sherial.
Yes, her rain of arrows destroyed part of the monsters, but most of them were only wounded and survived.
Damn… why the hell am I happy about that?
Sherial is my ally. Her attack failing should be bad for us.
But I still felt a strange joy that her attack hadn’t killed as many monsters as before.
That means I have a chance to win this competition.
Damn it, stop thinking about some stupid competition. I just need to do my job.
I kept destroying monsters and very quickly accumulated enough experience points to reach the next level.
And immediately teleported into the Training Room.
Of course, I’m not going to repeat past mistakes like letting free attribute points pile up.
From now on, I’ll distribute them every time I level up.

What?
The good news—two million free attribute points.
Damn, how much stronger will I become once I distribute them…
Alright.
Okay, three hundred thousand into intelligence, magic power, and magic defense…
No. Wait.
Why do I need intelligence and magic power right now?
Alright… two hundred thousand into magic defense. The rest goes into physical stats.
I still don’t have magic attacks. And right now, strength, defense, and speed matter more.
Done.
Whew… as always.
This feeling of becoming stronger… one of the best in the world.
I teleported back to the battlefield and immediately noticed the difference.
The monsters seemed slower.
No… I had simply become much faster.
One step—and the first monster was already dead.
I didn’t even feel my sword cut through it.
Damn…
This is just one level in the sixth rank… and the boost is already this huge.
Alright.
I need to speed up.
I dashed forward and began destroying monsters at maximum speed.
Before this battle ends, I want to gain one more level.
—
And just now, I killed the last monster.
It was a gray wolf—much larger than a horse. But of course, not that strong. Just as weak as all the other monsters here.
What the hell?
Why did the monsters run out right in the middle of the fun?
Not even half an hour had passed, and they were already gone.
Yes, I gained another level.
Accumulating 160 billion experience points turned out to be easy when there were this many monsters around… and this much experience.
But just a little more—and I would have gained another level.
And now I’m only level 177.
Of course, right after leveling up I distributed my free attribute points, just like last time: 600,000 into physical stats and 200,000 into magic defense.
But now I had already accumulated more than 200 billion experience points…
Just another forty billion—and I would have gotten the next level.
Maybe I really should destroy the golems too?
No.
What the hell?!
I quickly turned off Berserk because an overwhelming urge to destroy Rem’s golems had suddenly appeared in me.
In my eyes, they had suddenly become far too… tempting a target.
What’s that noise?
I looked at the wall.
People were shouting.
No, these weren’t alarmed cries… it sounded more like celebration.
What is there to celebrate? The monsters just ran out.
Alright, I’ll wait a little. Maybe the next wave will arrive soon.
I headed toward the wall and jumped up onto it in a single leap.
Oh… a bit too much, but I landed fine.
The people around me stepped back.
I ran a hand across my face.
No, there was almost no blood. And barely any on the armor either.
Hm… they stepped back at first, but now they were starting to come closer again.
Looks like everyone was celebrating the victory over the monsters.
"Hooray! They stopped the monsters!"
"Heroes! Real heroes!"
"Saviors! Long live the saviors!"
"Hey! Thank you!"
"You saved us!"
"Please, shake my hand!"
"Sign my sword!"
"Beauty! Marry me! I’m from a rich family!"
"Take me as your student!"
"Did you see how she was shooting?!"
"Those golems… that’s insane!"
"Hey, guy! Are you even human?!"
"He was killing them by the dozens all by himself!"
"Please, keep protecting us!"
"Don’t leave! Stay in the city!"
"Glory to the heroes!"
"Glory to the saviors!"
"HEY! MAKE A BABY WITH ME!!!"
I felt… like I had become famous.
But honestly, I didn’t really like fans like this.
Especially when every single one of them is armed to the teeth and holding a sword.
And anyway… who the hell shouted those last words?
I hope it was at least a girl…
Honestly, from the voice alone, I couldn’t tell.
Damn…
They’re getting closer.
Suddenly, I felt a wave of pressure spread out, pushing people back.
"Do not come closer to us," Rem said in a stern voice.
And instantly, it became quiet.
Somewhere off to the side, people were still shouting and celebrating, but here in the center, silence fell.
"Enough! The heroes are tired! Don’t bother them!"
Looks like that was the same captain… what was his name again?
Doesn’t matter.
People were still talking among themselves, but they no longer tried to come any closer.
"I wanted to thank you. You saved us," the captain said, approaching us.
"No need. This is our job," Sherial replied calmly.
"And I think it’s too early to celebrate," Rem suddenly said.
"What? Why? Do you have some kind of information?" the captain asked.
The smile that had been on his face just a moment ago visibly faded.
"Black wolves. We saw them in the Rank-5 zone—more than two thousand of them. And there wasn’t a single one in this battle," Rem said.
Oh, she’s right.
Damn, how could I forget about them?
They were level 175 and gave a huge amount of experience.
Yes, last time I ran away…
But this time, they’ll be my prey.
I looked at Rem and Sherial.
"Well… most of them will be my prey."
"Black wolves are very rare in this dungeon. More than two thousand is impossible. Nothing like that has ever happened before," the captain said.
"Maybe. But we noticed anomalous zones," Rem replied calmly. "For example, in the Rank-4 zone, we found more than twenty areas with a high concentration of monsters. On average—more than ten thousand in each."
"And in the Rank-5 zone, we found one such area. And there were more than two thousand black wolves there."
"We were trying to return and report this to the Adventurers’ Guild, but we didn’t make it in time. This happened first. Someone destroyed the dungeon core."
"Then… we need to prepare urgently," the captain started muttering.
Just a minute ago, his eyes had still been shining… and now they had gone dim, as if he had sunk into despair.
"Excuse me, I need to give orders and prepare the soldiers," he said, quickly stepping away from us.
Then he suddenly stopped.
"You will help, right?"
"Of course. This is our job," Rem answered calmly.
"Good… thank you," he said, then hurried off, already giving orders to the soldiers escorting him.
"So, Alisar, congratulations on reaching the sixth rank," Sherial said.
"Ah… thanks," I replied, scratching my head.
Damn, what am I doing?
I quickly took my hand off my head.
"Alright, guys, we need to prepare and come up with a good strategy against the next wave of monsters," Rem said.
