Chapter 14:
Oubaitori: The Girl I Saw That Day
A few years ago, I heard these three words from this video app called Neat Picks. It's basically an app where you can watch anime edits, short videos, and whatnot. Every time I scrolled, I'd come across videos that had these specific words: Anime - Canon - Events.
At first, I was like, “The hell is this?” But after analyzing all of those videos, I gained a vague understanding. These canon events are similar situations that take place in almost every romance anime, and they all follow the same formula.
Here are a few examples of those canon events: the festival episode, the school trip episode, the pool episode, the beach episode, and so many more. But one stood out and still stands out on social media; it's pretty popular.
To me, though, it doesn't stand out because of popularity, no. It stands out because it's actually happening to me, sort of. The event is the Sick Day Episode. Only, I'm not sick.
I'm very healthy, except for my heart, which wants to burst out of my chest. How am I experiencing this canon event? Well—because Chiyoko is standing right in front of me in our yard.
I forgot that I told her where our house is, but even so, I definitely wasn't expecting her to actually visit. She wore a white shirt with a cute design of the words: I love Tokyo. Her hair wasn't tied this time. I could see its true length, which was from her head to under her posterior. Don't ask how I saw her posterior.
Basically, it was as long as it could get, I think. What interested my eyes and heart was what she tied on the right side of her hair. It was the ribbon I gave her. It was tied like a neat bow, which just made her look that much cuter.
This might come across as me gloating. But I myself know what it's like to not have a partner. It sucks, like a lot. All a person needs is to be patient and resilient; one day, a destined partner will come, I guarantee it.
“Greetings, Hiro-chan,” Chiyoko greeted, her tone warm like freshly baked muffins. For a moment, there was a silence that had nothing to do with my parted lips and my dumbfounded expression.
“... Hello... to you as well, Chiyo…” I trailed off while I wiped my face. Then I blinked a few times.
Good lord… WHAT IS SHE DOING HERE!!! I mean, sure, it's sweet that she's visiting me, but, I blushed subtly. Why didn't she tell me? What if Mom was here? I haven't even told her I have a girlfriend.
“Are you visiting because you missed me?” I teased as my blush disappeared.
“As a matter of fact, I did,” she purred as her lips formed into a cat's mouth, and a few whiskers sprouted like flowers on her cheeks.
“Hahahaha… that embarrasses me, you know.” I snickered. “I'm giving you points for honesty, though.”
“I'm aware; that's why I said it.”
“How rude of me. Please come in, my lady; make yourself at home.”
I stepped to the side as I opened the door while she entered as I left it open. We headed for the living room as Miyu came into sight.
“Who was it?” she asked without even looking at me.
“Take a guess.”
“Okay, now I'm curious.” She turned around on the couch as her gaze landed on the Tokyo version of Chiyoko. “No f'ing way, Chiyo, it's you!”
“Hello, sister, it has been quite some time.”
“It really has; I've missed you so much.”
“And yet you have barely visited me over the past week.” Chiyoko pouted as her cheeks puffed up.
Miyu let out fake tears that streamed like a river as she placed her index fingers together over and over in a repeated motion. “I'm sowy…”
“I'm just joking; I feel a great thrill now that I am seeing you again.”
“Me too!” Miyu chirped as she vaulted over the couch only to stand in front of Chiyoko as they both looked like two happy kittens meowing at each other.
I got in between them as I gently gave them chops with both of my hands. “Okay girls, come back to reality now.”
“Oh my.”
“What's your deal, bro!”
“You should be thanking me.”
“For what, domestic abuse?”
“Oh come on, quit being a baby.”
“Alright, fine, I'll let you win this once, only this once.”
Why did that last part have to sound so menacing?
“I have an idea. Let's give Chiyo a tour of this antique of a house.”
“Hey, be nice to the house; it's not its fault that it's old. But in any case, that's a good idea.”
“Naturally; I'm the one who came up with it after all, so it makes sense that it's a good idea.”
I stared at Miyu for a moment as an awkward silence overwhelmed the atmosphere as I sighed while placing my hand on my face. Then I turned to Chiyoko, “Are you interested in a tour of this antique?”
“As long as you don't mind.”
“Alrighty then, let's get this tour started.”
Miyu led the way as she walked like a penguin seeing some fish while we followed closely behind her. We started in the kitchen, then the bathroom, the home gym.
But while we entered the sitting room, Chiyoko bumped into a small shelf as a vase fell and shattered, but when we tried to clean it she refused and said she'll take care of it; we insisted but she refused. I'm guessing her politeness was on high alert then. Anyway, it seems the old lady really kept in shape.
Almost everyone in our family works out in one way or another. It explains why Miyu's so fit and why I have a masculine build. But thankfully, it's those types of muscles that you can't see while I'm wearing a shirt. Even Mom works out on her off days.
