Chapter 19:
Vanishing Point
Gerda
We took off early in the morning, and only after we had left orbit and were heading to our ship did we start planning the next step of our journey.
With nothing binding us to any specific course, we were free to go where we wanted. I tried to suggest that we still could go with our original plan, but she just shook her head and said she didn’t want to get stuck in some shithole. I chuckled at her comment and never mentioned it again. I was more than happy with her decision if this is what she wanted.
We should probably leave the union, at least for now, and see how things would play out. That would give us plenty of places to choose from. Getting funds was another issue, but her savings would give us a good head start, and I was sure I could find something if we needed to. Soon we would turn adults, and that would make things much easier. We could even remain in some quiet place, staying on our ship until that happened.
Yeah, the ship… We still didn’t know what to do with it. I’d heard of some places that didn’t ask too many questions, but did we really want to sell it? It probably depended on how much her family wanted it back… I kinda liked the idea of travelling through the stars, and even if it was just a dream, maybe it was okay to dream from time to time… Who knew, with some luck, it might actually happen…
Kaya
I’d set out on this journey to find my mum and have the family I’d always dreamt of, never expecting that I would turn away from that course without even checking whether my dreams were real.
But when I needed to decide in a split second whether to chase a dream or live one, I chose the second option, and I was sure I would not regret it, no matter where our journey would take us.
Even if both of us were like damaged goods that no one wanted, it didn’t really matter. We’d found a way to complement each other, and even if it wasn’t a perfect solution, what in this world was perfect anyway? There was beauty in imperfection that I’d never realised before, and if any of us had been perfect from the beginning, we would never have had the chance to meet…
