Chapter 47:

Chapter 48 — Breakfast, Betrayal & a Bullet

My New Home

◽The Next Day◽ (Wednesday, 3 August 2050)
Nikolai was laying awake with Olivia in his embrace. 「Hey, Liv.」Olivia, happy about their recent activities, replied. 「Yah.」 She sat up straight and giggled. 「Next time I give you something, wait for the explanation before you do anything.」「Says the guy who didn't wanna let me go once I did the things he liked!」 She smirked at him.Nikolai countered.「Hm... So, breakfast?」「Don't worry about it.」 She giggled. 「My cooking skills have improved since last time.」「So I won't need an exorcism performed on it, then?」Nikolai flatly joked.「Wow, you got jokes now, huh, Mr. Comedian?」Olivia looked at him playfully.Nikolai counted again.「Yah, wouldn't this be some too talk about at stand-up?」Olivia chuckled. 「Know your limits.」 She got off him.Nikolai: 「Oh, yah, sorry for breaking the base of the bed...」Olivia: 「It's okay. I made you do things you wouldn't with your girlfriends, didn't I?」「Yah, you did, to be honest.」Nikolai confirmed.Olivia: 「So we're even.」 She left the bedroom in her robe.Nikolai: 【Guess I'll take a shower.】◽At Noon◽
【Nic is surely taking his sweet ass time.】 There was a knock on the door. 【Who could that be now?】 She went to look through the peep hole and opened the door. 「Flowers?」「Well, roses are your favorite, right?」Derek said as he gave it too her.Olivia hid her disdain. 「Yah, they are.」 【Tch, seems like he already forgot.】 She took the flower bouquet.Derek leaned in to kiss her cheek, but Olivia backed away. 「Oh.」 He gave a nervous chuckle. 「Sorry about that. I just missed you a lot.」Olivia rolled her eyes. 「C'mon in. I have to leave soon.」「O-oh, right.」 They went to the dining room. Derek noticed the second plate on the table. 「Hm... did you know I was coming this soon?」Olivia laughed. 「Don't flatter yourself. I have a guest over.」Derek: 【She seems different from what she was a couple of days ago.】 「Is it a guy?」Olivia: 「And why do you care? Besides, it's someone you don't have to worry about.」Derek: 【So it is a guy, but if that's true, then he must have a high position.】 They sat at the table.
Nikolai walked into the dining room and took a seat like he'd been there for years. When Olivia saw him, she beamed, and evident joy was on her face.
Nikolai cleared his throat, now speaking broken English. 「Who this malen'kiy chelovek (little man)?」Olivia giggled. 「This is my boyfriend, or soon might be ex-boyfriend depending on what he says to explain himself.」Nikolai looked at Derek, evaluating him. 「Ehhh, his,」 he made a disapproving hand gesture toward Derek, 「his, you know, slabyy (weak).」Olivia laughed softly. 「Yah, not everyone values strength like that.」Nikolai: 「Normal'no (alright).」Olivia stood up. 「So, for lunch: appetizer is borscht, main course is Beef Stroganoff and pelmeni, for dessert we have Blini, and to wash it down we got kvass...」 She then looked at Nikolai. 「...and Vodka!」Nikolai looked at Olivia expectantly. 「Is it Royal Pure?」
Olivia took the bottles from underneath the table and put them down.
Olivia giggled. 「I know how much you love these.」Nikolai: 「Spasibo, Olivia (Thank you, Olivia).」Olivia: 「Just so you know, these three bottles cost me one million, nine hundred and forty-seven thousand dollars!」Nikolai: 「Don't worry, I'll make it up to you.」Olivia: 「Oh, and I'm about to dish up because I know how much cold food ruins breakfast for you.」Nikolai: 「ty tak khorosho menya znaesh' (Wow, you know me so well).」 Olivia got busy setting the table.Derek looked at Nikolai, masking his judgment. 「So, I have a question, Nic—」Nikolai: 「No, no. Only Liv can call me Nic, and people I trust and respect.」 He looked at Derek with indifference. 「To you, it's Nikolai!」Derek's ego was bruised. 【Does that look mean I'm nothing but a bug to him?】 「Tch. So what's a Russian doing in America?」Nikolai poured himself a glass of vodka and drank it. 「Arrgh.」 He chuckled. 「That's the good stuff. To meet an old friend and you?」Derek: 「Here to talk to my girlfriend. But why are you really here?」Olivia brought the borscht to the table. 「Oh, like he said, he came to see an old friend. You have nothing to worry about when it comes to him.」 She giggled. 「He's harmless!」Nikolai slipped a watch onto her wrist. 「I knew it fit.」 【There, that will help.】Olivia was surprised. 「You didn't have to!」Nikolai looked at her. 「It's thanks for the Royal Pure. But is the Stroganoff ready?」Olivia giggled. 「Yah, you can have it after the borscht.」 She then dished for all of them.Derek: 【They're close. Way too close. But if I do this, I'll get way more than I have now.】Olivia looked at Derek, a serious tone in her voice. 「So, Derek, are you going to keep stalling or not?」「Um... Oh, yah.」 He sighed in preparation. 「Look, Olivia, nothing I say might change what I did, but believe me when I say it was all a once-off thing with that woman that meant nothing.」Olivia watched Derek lie with a polite smile on her face. 【If it weren't for the footage Nic brought, I probably would have believed him a little bit.】 「Hmm... Is that it?」Derek: 【Why does it feel like she knows more? No, it can't be! Don't doubt yourself now!】 「No, it's not. Olivia, I love you, I truly do. You're the only woman for me, and I'd do anything for your forgiveness.」 He clicked his pen twice.Olivia looked at Derek then giggled politely. 【Kinda ironic that I'm the fifth woman he told that, but I digress.】 Nikolai cleared his throat. 「Nic?」She looks at him a bit annoyed.Nikolai: 「Chto(What)? I'm done with the appetizer.」Olivia giggled. 「That fast?」Nikolai scoffed flatly. 「Military training.」Olivia rolled her eyes playfully. 「Alright, you can eat out of the pot and leave me some of the Beef Stroganoff.」Nikolai: 「Thanks.」 He went to the kitchen and ate directly out of the pot.Derek: 【This is my chance.】 「Alright, Olivia.」 He clicked his pen twice again. 「Wow, I'm suddenly more nervous...」
On the roof of a building 1.7 km (1859 yards) away, a spotter and a sniper whose target was Olivia were waiting for a signal—and they just got it.
