Chapter 5:
Kitty
"This cannot be happening." Abaddon's slender grey fingers rubbed little circles at each temple, his golden eyes squeezed shut in frustration, brow furrowed.
Abaddon picked up the phone and started dialing. He had a big problem, he needed a big solution. Well, a big solution in a small package.
"Nigel, it's Abaddon. I have a job for you. Can you come down to my office?"
"Well, sure, Big Guy! Anything for you!" Nigel replied Jovially. "Do you want me to grab you anything on my way over? Rotten egg sandwich? Moldy macaroni? I think the cafeteria has fresh maggot alfredo—"
"Just get here ASAP. Skip the cafeteria." He was already regretting bringing Nigel into this. Abaddon's eye began twitch. What was he doing? He must be losing his mind to ask for help from Nigel, of all the demons in all of Hell. NIGEL. He knew he would regret this, but he also didn't see any other option.
He got up from his desk and began pacing, as he often did, to get his thoughts straight before the buffoon arrived at his door. His moth-eaten cloak trailing behind his every step. This... Girl. He had received several calls from all different departments today with the same sighting of the same little red haired girl. But how did she get here? Who was she? He had so many unanswered questions and a plan that involved Nigel. He was not in the best position at the moment.
"Knock knock!" A small lizard man popped his head into the office. He was wearing a ratty t-shirt with a trucker mud-flap babe displayed prominently across his chest. Khaki coveralls hanging open on one side, partially obscuring the image. He carried a rusty red toolbox that was more dent than original box, at this point.
"Close the door. I have a job for you." Abaddon gestured to the metal chair on the other side of his desk, motioning or Nigel to sit. To his relief, Nigel obliged, swinging the door shut behind him with his thick green tail.
"You got it, boss man, whatever you need. Nigel is on the case. Nigel can get it done. Nigel—"
"Enough. Let me tell you what I need before I change my mind and call someone else." Abaddon's golden eyes flashed intensely as he stared across the desk. Nigel brought his hand to his mouth and made a zipping gesture.
"This morning I received a call from Agnes that there was a girl in the Receiving Room. A small child, she described to be aged three or four. Red hair, polka dot dress. I thought maybe she was seeing things, but then I got another call. and another, and another. She's everywhere. No one can tell me who she is, or why she is here. I need you to find her and bring her to me." Abaddon clasped his hands in his lap and leaned back in his desk chair.
"Wow, a girl, you say? Ain't that somethin'. Do you think she escaped from the Children's ward?" Nigel scratched his head, wondering how he was going to track down this little girl who had been all over the place without him knowing. How did she get around all his cameras undetected?
"Maybe. Look into it. But find her, as soon as possible. Bring her to me as soon as you've got her." Abaddon turned his desk chair 180 degrees to signify the end of this conversation.
"You got it, Big Guy! I'm on the case. Ol' Nigel can figure this one out for you, don't you worry. I'll find her and I'll—"
"Nigel, get out of my office." Abaddon was once again rubbing his temples vigorously. He may have made a grave mistake in trusting Nigel with this sensitive job. But if anyone could pull it off, it was Nigel.
