Chapter 5:
Tokyo Witch Trials
After leaving the school that day, Hana had wanted to go straight home and sleep, but Mashiro had insisted that Hana come home with her. After the appearance of Bounty Hunters at their school, Mashiro had explained to Hana that things were only going to become more dangerous.
Hana was too exhausted to argue, so she followed Mashiro to her house. However, Hana hadn't known what to expect, so when she saw a building that was too big to even call a mansion in the middle of Tokyo, she thought they were at the wrong place.
"Elizabeth, can you open the gate? It's Mashiro." Mashiro had been speaking into an intercom just outside of the front gate when it opened, letting her and Hana into the property. The building was larger than their school and the grounds it was built on were large enough to house two buildings of that size. The front yard was filled with various servants, working on maintaining the hedges, watering the flowers, and cleaning the yard. As Mashiro passed them, they all bowed to her, not making eye contact with her.
"Why are they all bowing?"
"My mother and father want it that way. Both of them are from historic lineages, so they have some nasty habits." Even as Mashiro said some harsh words about her parents, her face didn't have any emotion on it. Since the two had left the school and been out of the area where any of their classmates may have seen them, her face had lost all of its emotion.
Mashiro brought Hana to a large bedroom on the second floor. She had gone into her closet to change, leaving Hana to wait for her to finish. Mashiro's bedroom was sparsely decorated. There was a case filled with awards from a number of competitions that Mashiro had won, a bookshelf with old textbooks and college prep books, and a small jewelry box on a dressing table. Hana went to open it, only to find a single piece of jewelry inside it. It was a small hairclip with a snowflake design on it.
"If you want that, you can have it." Hana was surprised to see Mashiro standing beside her. She had changed into more comfortable clothes, but even those were still very fancy. She wore a white blouse and a pale blue skirt, which looked simple, but were made of a material that Hana would probably never be able to afford.
"No, I just thought it looked nice. I thought you should wear it some time." Mashiro stood there for a moment before she went to put on the hairclip. The snowflake matched the color of Mashiro's hair perfectly. "It looks good. If you wore it to school, I'm sure all of the boys would be even more obsessed with you."
Mashiro took the hairclip off, put it back in the jewelry box, and sat down on her bed. She patted the spot on the bed beside her to have Hana join her. As Hana sat down, Mashiro asked, "When did you become a witch?"
"Um... I- Wait, I can say this, right?"
"Yes. I am a witch, so you can tell me." As if to emphasize her point, Mashiro conjured a small crystal of ice out of the palm of her hand.
"I- I became a witch on my birthday, about two weeks ago."
"Have you learned what your magic is?"
Hana looked down, somewhat embarrassed. "No... Not yet."
Mashiro paused before she placed her hand on top of Hana's, causing Hana to jump at the sudden chill. "Wha- What did you do that for?"
"I was going to help you learn how to use your magic."
After Mashiro explained to Hana what she was going to do, she had Hana sit down on the floor and close her eyes. "Now, in order for me to activate the magic inside your body, I need to send my magic into you."
"But wait, if you activate my magic, won't that mean that I would set off the Witch Detectors, like the one in the Witch Hunter building?"
For the first time since they had left the school, Hana saw a slight smirk cross Mashiro's face. "Those machines will go off at anything. If you cast a small amount of magic on them," Mashiro gathered a cold wind around her as an example, "those machines will detect anyone as a witch. Just stand behind a man when you do it. No one will suspect a thing. Now, back to this."
Mashiro sat in front of Hana, gently resting her hands on Hana's. Mashiro's hands were cold, like the ice that she conjured. As she began to gather her magic in her hands, those hands only grew colder and colder. Mashiro leaned forward to touch her forehead to Hana's. It, too, was freezing cold. As the magic began to race into Hana's body, she felt herself growing colder and colder until, suddenly, she found herself in an endless void. Before her, she could see a female form made entirely out of the starry night sky.
"Hana Ajikawa, do you wish to learn your magic?"
Hana couldn't speak, but her intentions were clear to the person in front of her.
"Hana Ajikawa, what is the one thing you love most in this world?"
Unwittingly, her mind went to the thing she was named after: flowers. Nature was so beautiful. So chaotic, but so controlled. For every fear that she felt about living as a witch in a world that supposedly hated her, she knew that the world did not hate her, or else it would have never created flowers.
"Hana Ajikawa, what is the greatest desire that you have?"
Her mind went to the fear that she felt whenever people were looking at her, when the Bounty Hunters had been at the school, and when she had believed she had been caught at the Bureau. The only thing she ever wanted was to feel safe.
"Hana Ajikawa, your magic is..."
As Hana opened her eyes, she saw that Mashiro had stepped away. She had a look of amazement on her face as she watched Hana. As Hana looked down at herself, she saw that she was surrounded by flower petals. There were so many that they were forming a small cloud that gently circled her. She reached out to touch the cloud, to which it responded by flowing up her arm and over her shoulders, before flowing back down the other arm and circling her again. Hana could tell that the petals would respond to her thoughts, so she thought about what she could do.
She had the petals circle around her before she gestured for them to flow over to Mashiro and begin circling her. Then she had the petals begin dancing around the room, flying in every direction, forming small birds out of them, and then collapsing them into a burst of petals, like a real firework.
As the petals fell to the ground in every color Hana could imagine, she looked at Mashiro, who was still amazed by the sight in front of her. For the first time since Hana had become a witch, she finally felt like there was a point to any of it.
"Hey, Mashiro, isn't it beautiful?" The look of pure, unadulterated happiness on Hana's face was infectious. For the first time ever, Hana saw Mashiro smiling. Not a smirk, not a smug smile, but a happy smile, one that could only be on the face of someone truly happy.
