Chapter 1:
Seven lost keijus
Chapter 2: Shadows of Doubt
The moon cast a silver glow over the village, the night air heavy with the scent of blooming cherry blossoms. Isami wandered alone, his footsteps quiet on the stone path.
Tomorrow was the day.
Different skilled people with chi. People with purpose. People with power. And him? He had nothing. No chi. No abilities. No gift. He wasn't a combat beast like Hakimaru, who trained endlessly and still wielded flames. Tomorrow, his journey would begin—but what kind of journey awaited a boy with nothing?
He clenched the necklace around his neck.
At the edge of the village, he stopped, gazing out at the rolling hills. His mind drifted into memory: Kusicame's stern face, Kimara's teasing smile, Hakimaru's fiery determination. Amidst it all, a hollow ache. He didn't belong. He was a fake.
But I'll never give up. I'll be the best one day.
A gentle breeze rustled the grass. Then a figure emerged from the shadows.
Kusicame.
“Isami, what are you doing out here?”
Isami jumped. “Oh, just… enjoying the night air, Sensi!”
Kusicame's eyes narrowed, seeing right through him. “Come, walk with me.”
They strolled side by side, night sounds enveloping them. After a long silence, Kusicame spoke.
“Do you know why I took you in as a child?”
Isami shook his head, eyes downcast. “I… I don't know.”
Kusicame smiled. “Because I saw something in you. Potential. Heart. You don't need chi to be strong, Isami. When I found you as a baby in the rubble with this pendant, when I looked in your eyes… I saw hope. I saw life.”
Isami's eyes snapped up, a spark igniting. “But everyone else—”
“Others don't define you,” Kusicame interrupted gently. “You define yourself.”
Isami's smile faltered. “I just feel…”
A hand on his shoulder. Kind eyes. “You belong here, Isami. With us. And tomorrow, you'll prove it.”
Isami's face crumbled, then broke into a goofy grin. “Yeah, yeah! I'll show 'em!”
Kusicame chuckled. “That's my Isami.”
---
The next morning, sunrise painted the sky in gold and pink.
Isami woke late, scrambling out of bed. “Ahhh! I'm late again! Hakimaru's going to rub it in my face!”
He tripped over his own feet, knocking over a stool.
In the courtyard, Kimara sipped tea, smirking. “You're always late. Maybe one day you'll actually arrive on time.”
“Hey! I have… reasons!”
Yin floated nearby, levitating as she meditated. “You just don't plan ahead, Isami.”
Hakimaru zoomed past, leaving a trail of fire. “Please, for our sake, don't disgrace us.”
---
The Umbra Academy selection grounds teemed with aspiring students from the seven clans. The imposing gate, adorned with symbols of Water, Fire, Sound, Figure, Vision, Speed, and Poppet, loomed ahead. The air pulsed with anticipation.
Hakimaru walked with stoic calm. Yin looked innocently around. Kimara exuded pride. And Isami? His eyes were wide with wonder. “Wow, everywhere is so beautiful.”
“Isami, don't act funny,” Hakimaru whispered.
“Shut up, Hakimaru! I told you, don't disgrace us.”
At the high table, six clan leaders sat with stern faces—the Speed Clan leader notably absent.
Vision Clan Leader Danchi scowled. “Why is it every time we have a meeting, Yutosushi finds a way not to come?”
Fire Clan Leader Enyo agreed. “Yutosushi's actions are absurd. What makes him feel above us?”
Water Clan Leader Iara raised a calming hand. “Maybe he has his reasons. Or an emergency.”
“Don't tell me that, Iara,” Danchi snapped.
Poppet Clan Leader Tsumi spoke softly but firmly. “I agree with Iara.”
Then Sound Clan Leader Dorgon's deep voice rumbled, “The leader is here.”
The air shifted. Yashiroyin Kusicame, accompanied by his seven Paragons, walked in. He took his seat on the royal throne, Paragons before him, clan leaders flanking his sides.
The Water Clan leader locked eyes with Kimara. Isami noticed her expression darken—angry, like a storm brewing.
“Guys, do you notice something? Kimara resembles the Water Clan leader,” Isami whispered.
“Shut up, moron. You're probably hallucinating again,” Kimara hissed.
Yin chuckled softly. “Isami, just be serious for once in your life.”
Kusicame's personal assistant—a Paragon with a sweet, clear voice—stepped forward. “Welcome, young aspirants! The Umbra Academy Selection commences in a few minutes. As you know, the Umbra Core has protected humanity and civilians from akumas for over 450 years. This competition chooses the next generation of Umbras. You will be grouped to fight. Those at the bottom will be eliminated. If you lack the will or strength, kindly leave now.”
The crowd hushed.
Isami's eyes widened as he scanned the grounds. This was it—his moment to shine.
I won't lose. I won't give up.
