Chapter 2:

The first trial

Seven lost keijus

Chapter 3: The First Trial

The Umbra Academy selection grounds stretched across the valley like a living sea of ambition. Thousands of aspirants crowded the field, their clan banners whipping in the morning wind. The high table gleamed under the sun, seven clan leaders seated in solemn authority.

Isami stood among the masses, his hand clutching the pendant beneath his shirt. His white hair, tipped with gold at the edges, caught the light. His golden eyes were wide, taking everything in.

This is it. Thousands of people… all here to prove themselves. And I'm one of them. Me. The guy with no chi. The guy who trips over his own feet.

He took a shaky breath.

I won't lose. I won't give up.

The Paragon stepped onto the main platform. Her voice carried across the entire valley without effort.

"Attention, all aspirants! The Umbra Academy Selection will now officially commence!"

The crowd hushed. Thousands of eyes turned toward her.

"Listen carefully. The rules are simple. Each aspirant will have five matchups. Every victory earns you one point. At the end of all matches, those in the relegation zone—the lowest scorers—will be eliminated. No exceptions."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Isami's face paled.

"A match ends when one of two conditions is met: knockout or ring-out. Defeat your opponent unconscious, or force them beyond the arena boundary. That is all. No time limits. No second chances within a match."

She paused, letting the weight sink in.

"Now… the matchup board."

A massive glowing board rose behind her—hundreds of names, glowing gold, pairing up in real time.

The crowd surged forward. Isami got swallowed immediately.

"HEY—WAIT—I CAN'T SEE—"

A hand grabbed his collar and yanked him out.

Kimara's blue eyes were irritated. "Stay close, idiot."

"You keep saving me…"

"I keep saving myself from embarrassment. Different thing."

They rejoined Yin and Hakimaru on a raised platform where the board was visible.

Hakimaru scanned the board, his split blue-and-flame hair shifting. "Match 4. Fire Clan opponent. Name: Kazan. Should be interesting."

Yin tilted her head, grey eyes unfocused. "Match 7. Sound Clan. I don't recognize the name."

Kimara stiffened. "Match 3. Speed Clan. Name: Jin."

Isami noticed her expression darken—just for a second. He filed it away.

He scanned the board. "Okay okay okay where's mine… where's…"

He found it.

Match 5: ISAMI (Unaffiliated) vs. GORO (Figure Clan)

"I'm fifth."

"Fifth match," Kimara said. "You have to wait through four fights."

"I'm fifth. I have to watch four fights. And THEN fight. That's worse. That's SO much worse."

Hakimaru smirked. "More time to panic. Good luck."

Isami grabbed Yin's arm. "Yin. Yin you're the calm one. Tell me I won't die."

Yin smiled gently. "You probably won't die."

"PROBABLY?!"

---

The camera of Isami's attention drifted through the crowd. Past excited families. Past nervous aspirants. Past clan members whispering strategies.

And stopped.

A boy sat alone against a wall. Completely still. Completely silent.

Dark hair fell over his face. His eyes—pale, dark purple—stared at nothing. His clothes were worn, simple, almost like a monk's robes. No clan symbol. No friends nearby. No one even stood close to him.

The crowd flowed around him like water around a stone.

Isami noticed him from across the grounds. "…Whoa."

Kimara followed his gaze and frowned. "What now?"

"That guy. Alone over there. Who is he?"

"I don't know. Never seen him before."

Hakimaru glanced over, his flame-colored eye narrowing. "Shizuke. Vision Clan. Or… used to be."

"What do you mean 'used to be'?"

Hakimaru shifted uncomfortably. "His father. Toruyami. Used to be Vision Clan leader. Then the Fourth Blood Moon War happened. Now he's called a traitor."

"A traitor? What did he do?"

"No one talks about it. Just… stay away from that guy. Trouble follows him."

Yin tilted her head, listening. "His heartbeat… is so slow. Steady. Like a distant drum."

Isami frowned. "That's good, right? Calm?"

"Too calm," Yin said quietly. "Like someone who's used to being alone. Very alone."

Isami stared at Shizuke. The stillness. The silence. The way everyone gave him space like he was cursed.

"He looks like he hasn't smiled in years."

"Stop staring. It's rude."

"I'm not staring. I'm observing."

"You're staring."

"I'm OBSERV—"

Shizuke's eye opened. Slowly. Deliberately. It found Isami across the crowd. Held.

Isami froze. "He's looking at me. Why is he looking at me. KIMARA HE'S LOOKING AT ME."

Kimara grabbed him. "Move. Before you make it weird."

She dragged him away. Shizuke watched them go. No expression.

Then his eye closed again. Waiting.

---

A deep gong echoed across the grounds.

"First matchup of the Umbra Academy Selection!"

The board glowed: SHIZUKE (Vision Clan) vs. RAIGO (Sound Clan)

Murmurs rippled.

"Shizuke? The traitor's son?"

"He's actually fighting?"

"Raigo's strong. This'll be quick."

Shizuke rose. Walked toward the arena. No rush. No nerves. Just… walking.

From the other side, Raigo burst forward—stocky build, intense eyes, muscles coiled like springs. He didn't smile or wave. His focus was absolute.

"Vision Clan… let's see if you're as good as they say."

The arena was circular, thirty meters across, with a glowing white boundary line. Dirt ground, recently flattened.

Shizuke stepped onto his side. Hands at his sides. Pale purple eyes fixed forward.

The Paragon raised her hand. "BEGIN!"

Raigo roared, slamming his hands together. "SONIC WAVE CRASH!"

A massive shockwave exploded forward—dirt blasting, air cracking, the arena shaking. The crowd gasped.

But Shizuke was already gone. Three steps left. The wave passed through empty space.

Raigo's eyes went wide. "WHAT?!"

He recovered fast, whirling and clapping again—another wave. Shizuke ducked. Inches. His hair moved from the wind. That was all.

"AGAIN! AGAIN! AGAIN!"

Raigo was relentless. Shockwave after shockwave. The arena became cratered, dust choking the air. But Shizuke moved like water through rocks. A step here. A pivot there. Never rushed. Every explosion missed by less than a hair.

Raigo stopped. Breathed. His eyes narrowed.

"You're fast. But let's see if you can handle this—"

He exploded forward with sonic speed, the ground cracking beneath his feet. He crossed the arena in an instant, fist pulled back, vibrating with overwhelming strength.

The crowd screamed.

Shizuke's eye widened—just slightly. He barely dodged, the wind from Raigo's punch tearing at his clothes.

Raigo didn't stop. Another punch. Another. Another. Each one carrying enough force to shatter stone.

He adapted, Shizuke thought. Changed tactics. Impressive.

He dodged again and again. But Raigo's speed kept him pressed.

"I WON'T STOP! I WON'T GIVE UP! SHOW ME WHAT YOU'VE GOT, TRAITOR'S SON!"

The crowd was electric. This was a real fight.

Isami's mouth hung open. "He's… he's actually fighting back! Raigo's not giving up!"

Hakimaru's jaw was tight. "That speed… that strength… Sound Clan basics, but he's mastered them."

Yin listened intently. "Raigo's heartbeat is pounding. Maximum effort. Shizuke's… still hasn't changed."

Kimara said quietly, "That's not normal. No one's pulse stays that steady in a fight."

"He's not fighting like a normal person," Yin murmured. "He's fighting like… like he's already seen the end."

---

At the high table, the seven clan leaders watched. Kusicame sat on the royal throne, his expression unreadable.

The Vision Clan leader—Danchi—leaned forward, his eyes cold. "The son of the traitor… moves just like his father. Same calm. Same arrogance."

The Fire Clan leader, Enyo, a broad-shouldered man with flame-colored hair, glanced at him. "Careful, Danchi. The Yashiroyin is present."

"I speak only truth. Toruyami betrayed us all. His bloodline carries that stain. Look at him—fighting like he's above everyone. Like we should all bow."

Kusicame's voice cut through the air, calm but heavy. "Danchi."

Danchi stiffened.

"The boy fought for nothing his father did," Kusicame said, not even looking at him. "Judge him by his actions today. Nothing more. Not his name. Not his blood. His actions."

A long pause. Danchi's jaw tightened. He said nothing. But his eyes remained fixed on Shizuke with cold intensity.

---

Back in the arena, Raigo stood in the center of the destroyed arena, chest heaving, sweat pouring down his face. He had launched over fifty attacks. His arms shook. His speed had slowed.

Shizuke stood fifteen meters away. Unhurt. Untouched. Breathing normally. His clothes were dusty. That was all.

"Why… why won't you… attack?!"

Shizuke's voice was quiet, calm. "Fifty-three attacks. Fifty-three misses."

Raigo's eyes widened.

"Your left foot drags slightly before you use Sonic Speed. Your right arm drops low after every Sonic Strike. Your breathing fails after eight consecutive attacks. Your stance widens when tired. You're predictable."

Raigo stared at him.

"You have power. Real power. But power without control is just noise. And you're one meter from the edge."

Raigo looked down. He had been pushed back—without a single blow—to the very edge of the arena. When did that happen?

"NO—NO—I WON'T—"

He charged. Last desperate attack. Sonic speed. Maximum strength. Everything he had left. Tears streaming from his eyes.

"PRESSURE BURST!"

A concentrated blast of sound—condensed to maximum density—shot toward Shizuke like a spear.

Shizuke moved. Just slightly. The attack passed within an inch of his face.

Then he stepped forward. Inside Raigo's guard. One finger touched Raigo's chest. Lightly.

Raigo was already off-balance. Already committed. Already falling.

He stumbled. Stumbled. His foot hit the white line. Hovered.

"NOOOOO—"

He fell backward. Both feet crossed. He landed hard outside the arena.

Silence. One full second.

Then an explosion of noise. Confusion. Murmurs spreading like fire.

"He never attacked!"

"He just… moved!"

"Raigo gave everything and never touched him!"

The Paragon announced after a beat, "Match concluded! Winner: Shizuke of the Vision Clan!"

Raigo lay on the ground. Chest heaving. Eyes staring at the sky.

He had tried everything. Every technique. Every ounce of power. Every scream. He had adapted. He had pushed harder. He had given more than ever before.

And he had lost without landing a single blow.

Tears streamed down his face into the dirt. "I… I gave… everything…"

Shizuke walked to the edge of the arena. Looked down at him.

For one moment—just one—something flickered in those cold, dim purple eyes. Not pity. Not satisfaction. Something almost… human.

"Your power is real. But power without control is just noise. You adapted. You changed tactics. That's more than most."

He paused.

"Don't waste it."

He turned and walked away.

---

Isami hadn't breathed in sixty seconds. He exhaled. "…That was… that was…"

Kimara was serious. "Perfect. That was perfect."

Hakimaru's jaw tightened. "Raigo gave everything. Changed tactics. Pressured him. And still… never touched him."

Yin said softly, "Shizuke saw everything before it happened. Every attack. Every adjustment. Every breath. That's pure Vision Clan ability at its highest level."

Isami stared at where Shizuke had disappeared into the crowd. "That guy… is the most terrifying person I've ever seen."

"And you're match 5," Kimara said. "You have time to watch more."

"That's not helping!"

Yin said gently, "Watch them all, Isami. Learn from everyone. Not just their power—their calm. Their patience. Their control."

Isami touched his pendant. A nervous habit. "Control… yeah. Sure. I'll just… be controlled. Like him. Easy."

---

After the match, Shizuke walked through the crowd. People parted for him automatically—some in fear, some in disgust, some in curiosity. No one spoke to him.

No one except one person.

A girl stepped into his path. Delicate. Bright red hair that caught the sunlight. Eyes that seemed shy but determined. She wore the Fire Clan symbol on her sleeve.

"Um… excuse me…"

Shizuke stopped. His dim purple eye fixed on her. Waiting.

"That was… that was really amazing. Your control. Your calm. Raigo gave everything and you just… moved like water. I've never seen anything like it."

Shizuke said nothing.

She pushed through her nerves. "I just wanted to say… I hope I can fight like that someday. With that kind of… presence. That kind of stillness."

A long pause. Shizuke's expression didn't change.

"You fight next?"

She nodded quickly. "Yes. Match 2. Against a Poppet Clan girl. Her name is Kikuri."

"Then stop wasting time talking to me. Focus on your own fight."

He stepped around her and kept walking.

Shine stood there, her cheeks flushing slightly. But she didn't look hurt—just thoughtful.

…He's right. Focus.

She walked toward the arena, her shyness slowly hardening into determination. Her red hair swayed with each step.
