Chapter 1:

The peculiar class

Strive To Be Human

Eight grade, or what in Bulgaria is considered the beginning of highschool. It’s a period of life which invokes a spectrum of emotions in people. Some are indifferent due to not having much change for them. Some are excited because its a time of new beginning. Some dread it because they have to say goodbye to the old. For me somehow it ended up being all three at once.
My name is Kitodar, people call me Kito for short.
The beginning of high school was interesting for me. I was looking forward to making connections and getting a girlfriend as most people my age start doing. I was ready to go full throttle, be outgoing, talkative and popular.
Just like I used to be until not too long ago…
My interest was peaked at the thought of all these new experiences that awaited me.
The first day I was trembling while sitting down. Out of excitement or fear? I couldn’t tell.
I was sitting next to a friend from my old school, his name was Pavel. The fact that I was already with someone I knew made the experience a tad more tolerable.
The strongest emotion that I felt when I met my new class was...disbelief.
At least half of them looked nothing like my peers from the previous grade.
One girl was dressed like a village granny.
One guy already had a full grown mustache and beard!
In contrast, another guy just looked like he was a tall pre-schooler. He had a baby face, and was wearing shorts with flip flops.
Most of the girls had a lot of heavy makeup on. Something I hadn’t seen even one girl my age do before.
These people didn’t look my age at all!
I thought I was stuck in some sort of delinquent class where most people have been repeating eighth grade for three or four years in a row...And the weirdest one of all… There was a guy with huge burly hair. It reached all the way down to his lower back. He had a weird black cap on, with “FBI” written on its front in bold white letters. The cap sat loosely on top of his wild hair. I had no idea how it stood on there without falling off. Was it glued on or lodged in I wondered?
A woman suddenly walks in as I was busy looking around.
“Hello students! Its nice to meet you all!” She proclaimed in a loud and strict voice.
“My name is Dikta! I am assigned as the head teacher to this class.  For now lets read some class rules so we all understand what the proper order is in this school!”
...Then she proceeded to spend an entire hour dragging on about rules we’ve listen to at the start of every normal school year. She also made a short overview of our classes – it seems we will have a heavy focus on English classes in our first years at this school. We would have three English classes a day the from Monday till Wednesday, then one each day on Thursday and Friday.
“Lucky me!” I thought. “Its gonna be extremely easy for me, as my English has always been near perfect.” The thought made me crack a smile.
Dikta suddenly shouted even louder.
“Now! You will each walk in front of the class introduce yourself based on your class number. Valentin! Your up first.”
The guy with the massive hair stands up rapidly, as if on command, he quickly walked up front and faced everyone.
The class that had previously lost focus now all had their eyes glued to him. Now he is in full view. He's tall, pale, wearing a sort of ragged old rock t-shirt and jeans. The way he stood...Bent forward a bit. His arms...he was holding them out in front of himself. They looked loose and limp.
The way he's looking back at us is weird. It's as if he's constantly spacing out, like he was looking right trough us and had to focus back to see us again.
He suddenly raises his hand in salute and speaks out loudly.
“My name is Valentin! Please call me Val, for short. Its nice to meet you all!”
Dikta made small smirk and finally spoke without shouting.
“Well aren’t you an interesting one. Doesn’t all that hair get in your way?”
“No ma’am! I’m used to it.”
“OK, if you say so. Do you have any favorite school subjects?”
“Yes! History and Biology.”
“History huh? Well, I'm also your History teacher. I'll be looking forward to discussing the subject with you in the future. You can sit down now.”
“I will also be looking forward to it. Thank you!”
He sat down quietly.
Dikta didn't even tell him to stop saluting...I guess she just liked it too much.
Afterwards one by one a few more people were brought up in a similar fashion.
“Tsvetelin, your up next.”
The guy with the full beard gets up and slowly walks to the front. The look in his face gives away that he’s annoyed right now.
He...looks kinda built. With a somewhat wide back and shoulders. His hair is short, curly and he has glasses on.
“Hi everyone. My name is Tsvetelin, you can call me Tsetso. My favorite subjects are English and Computer Science. Thanks for having me.”
And with that quick explanation he went right back to his seat.
Dikta didn’t even get to say anything.
“Nice to meet you too I guess. That was a to the point introduction.” Dikta spoke with an effort to not sound offended.
A few more introductions later and she calls out my friend, Pavel.
He gets up and stands in front of the class.
The first thing you notice about him is his height. He’s probably the same hight as that Val guy.
In contrast to him though, Pavel’s hair is cut really short. He is slightly muscular. The soft way he spoke up, revealed to the class what I already knew well, his deeply timid nature.
“Nice to meet you all, my name is Pavel. My favorite subjects are Chemistry and Math. I’m looking forward to a fresh start in this school and I hope we get along well.”
“Thank you! That’s the friendliest introduction we’ve got all day. I’m sure the class and especially the Chemistry and Math teachers will enjoy having you around. They usually don’t get a lot of students that enjoy their subjects. Your free to sit down.”
Pavel sat down next to me. I gave him a smile and a thumbs up in approval.
Dikta continued calling out people.
I was feeling more and more tense as each person passed by until suddenly.
“Kitodar, your up.”
The sea of swirling emotions in me ceased. I clench my cheeks, get up and walk out slowly. I turn to the class and take a breath to introduce myself.
Brrr, Brrr, Brrr
Dikta’s phone rang.
“Sorry about that. It’s an unknown number, could be important. I’ll be right back.”
She said as she hurriedly left the room.
Then the class kept looking at me.
*sigh*
“Well that was some good timing, right?” I cheerly responded to the attention.
I got a few responses back from the class.
“Pff, yeah it was.”
“You must be something special. You get extra time.”
“Guess we’ll wait for a bit.”
“Niiceeee! Broke the ice!” I thought to myself.
“Ok... so I have a question that’s been bugging me... Is everyone here...fourteen?
The class responded quickly.
“I am.”
“Yup.”
“I’m still thirteen.”
And a lot more “Yes” was heard.
“Why? What age did you think we were?” Asked the boy with the beard, I think his name was Tsetso.
“It’s just that some of you look too...mature to be in eighth grade I guess.” I respond with a wink and a smile.
The class giggled and a shouted out a few replies.
“Yeah, I guess your right”.
“Sure”.
“Seems so”.
“It’s kinda ironic the the guy with the full beard is asking why, right?”
Tsetso smirked slightly and responded “Mayyyybe”.
As the class was giggling, Dikta quickly entered back into the room, slamming the door.
“It’s your first time seeing my back and your already making a ruckus? *giggles* I’m going to enjoy whipping you people into shape.”
The class sat still in silence.
“Anyway, its your first day, so your forgiven this time. Val, your parents called. They said you should wait for them here. After class is over they’ll be picking you up.”
Val lowers his head and with widened eyes and says “Understood”.
“Now then Kitodar, please introduce yourself.”
“Now officially hi everyone! You can call me Kito. My favorite subjects are English and Physical Education (PE). There are a lot of unique people here, so I’m hoping we can make a lot of fun and unique memories together in the coming years. I wish us all a fun time here.”
The students make a small cheer.
“Well that’s a positive spirit you’ve got going there. Nice to see! I hope everyone is able to view coming to school here the same way you have. You may sit down”.
I walk back to my seat feeling a bit proud of myself.
After a few more introductions our first day of class is over.
In the next few weeks I proceeded to get to know all of my classmates better...
Except for that guy with the big hair. I haven’t seen him again after day one.
