Chapter 7:

The Mysterious Contact Entry

Never Say Never

“Woah! You sold out? Congratulations!”, Maria exclaimed happily surprised on her way out of the room.

“Thanks…”, David replied with a smile.

“Maybe it was a good thing, that I wasn’t there with you!”, Leon added.

David didn’t comment. It has been two weeks since the convention. David was with his friends doing their usual movie night.

“Anything interesting happened aside from you selling out?”, Jonas asked.

“Nah… not really…”, David replied and scratched his beard.

Jonas and Leon looked at him.

“What happened?”, Jonas asked.

“Huh? What do you mean?”, David replied, trying not to let his tone slip.

“Don’t play dumb. We have known each other far too long for that. Something happened.”, Leon remarked and stared at him.

David continued to scratch his beard.

“Hm… well… I kinda missed the last train…”, he recounted.

“Huh… that’s quite unusual for you…”, Maria interjected, bringing a round of beers.

“What happened? Why did you miss the train?”, Jonas didn’t let up.

“Uhm… I met this woman at the convention.”, David explained.

Maria swirled around and all three were now staring at him.

“Before you say anything… It wasn’t like that! We just talked.”, David quickly added.

Well, not entirely…

“Well, we didn’t expect you to sleep with a woman you just met all of a sudden.”, Leon joked.

But I kinda did…

“So, okay… You two talked and you missed the last train... What then?”, Maria continued the questioning.

“We stayed at the same hotel, drank a few beers, talked some more, went to bed and took the train next morning…”, David hastily told them, leaving out a few critical details.

Jonas and Leon looked at him and seemed still not entirely convinced.

“Told you.”, Maria said with a smirk.

“Huh?”, David said confused.

“Didn’t I tell you, that you can just randomly bump into someone?”

“You did… but it doesn’t matter, I won’t be seeing her again anyways…”

“Why not? Didn’t you enjoy talking with her?”

“I did… very much in fact. But even if I want to see her again, it’s impossible.”

“Why is that?”

“Because I don’t have a way of contacting her… I don’t even know her name.”

The three of them looked at David confused.

“What… Why?”, asked Jonas still a bit flabbergasted.

“Uhm… I kinda forgot to ask… I didn’t tell her my name either…”, David admitted and scratched his beard again.

Jonas and Leon simultaneously hit their forehead with the palm of their hand.

“Dude… introduction…”, Leon started.

“That’s a basic conversations skill.”, Jonas finished.

“Guess, I’m lacking in the basics....”, David stated, smiling stupidly and shrugged.

Everybody began to laugh.

“Well, baby steps”, Maria pressed through the laughter and calmed down slowly, “He managed to talk with her for a while… maybe next time he won’t forget to ask her name or contact… At least it’s not impossible for you to meet again, just more unlikely than it had to be… Well, never say never. The world can be small sometimes.”

David didn’t comment on that, just smiled weakly and took a sip of his beer.

“Ah! Speaking of contacts! Do you guys happen to have Tom’s number? I lost all my contacts when my old phone had that incident involving the washing machine…”, Maria asked.

“Tom from Uni? Haven’t heard in ages from him, why do you need his number?”, Leon inquired.

“I don’t have much contact with him anymore as well, but we at least send birthday wishes each year… and his is next week.”

“Oh, shit! I’ll look!”

“Me too…”, David added and pulled out his phone.

For some reason David didn’t use the search bar for his contacts, but scrolled down manually and so he happened to find a rather peculiar entry as he came to the letter T. It made him pause and look more closely.

Text me… just… Text me…

“Nah, sorry. I don’t have him.”, Leon exclaimed after looking up from his phone.

“Okay… David?”, Maria asked.

“Oh, uhm…”, David jolted slightly and began to look at the rest of the entries with the letter T, “No… me neither… sorry.”

“Bummer… Well, thanks for looking anyways…”

David looked back at his phone. The mysterious contact entry was still there.

No history… no additional info… just… Text me… I don’t remember putting such a contact in…

A thought of someone peticular shot through his mind.

Could it be… her?

David felt his mouth twitching and forming a smile. He immediately shook his head slightly trying to physically rid himself of the thought.

Don’t be stupid there is no way…

He looked up at Leon and Jonas, arguing over what movie to watch.

It was probably a prank long ago from those two… I just never check my contacts…

David took a sip of his beer.

Or was it…
