Chapter 21: The Summer I Love

✿———✦———✿

“Thanks for everything, Chinatsu...“

This summer feels different. It’s August 1st, 2030; three months have passed since the incident at Kobe Harborland, and our bond has only grown stronger. Every day, Chinatsu and I spend our time together, doing things that make me love summer even more. From visiting sunflower gardens—Chinatsu’s favorite place—to going to the obstetrician to check on her pregnancy, which has now entered its fifth month.

I remember when we were children, Chinatsu would often take me to flower gardens every summer. Back then, I didn't realize how precious those moments were. But now, with every step we take amidst the expanse of flowers, I can feel all those past memories merging with the present. I have always loved summer, but now it feels more meaningful. There is Chinatsu, and the baby growing inside her, adding a warmth I have never felt before.

Summer in our apartment can sometimes be stifling. The air gets so hot that even the AC doesn't help much. Because of that, I often go out to seek fresh air or gather with friends—including the occasional visit to Miharu’s workplace.

Today, I accompanied Yorishiro to a shopping center in Kobe. He’s a good kid; he wanted to find a gift for his parents, who are celebrating their wedding anniversary. We wandered from one shop to another, and on the way back, my eyes were suddenly drawn to a ring in a jewelry store display. The ring was so beautiful and sparkling; the reflection of light from the gemstone at its center made me pause for a moment.

I couldn't stop thinking about how that ring would look on Chinatsu’s ring finger. Its brilliance reminded me of her warm smile, of all the summers we had spent together. Perhaps it’s time...

The clock already showed 3:30 PM, and I realized I had to get home immediately. Today is Chinatsu’s birthday; she’s surely prepared dinner, and I don't want to keep her waiting too long.

“Yorishiro, I have to head back. Chinatsu is waiting at home. Don't forget to come over later, okay?” I said, glancing at my watch.

Yorishiro nodded, smiling. “Yeah, let’s go. I’m done shopping, too. Today was quite productive—so much so that I almost forgot. I’ll remind the others as well.”

We walked side-by-side out of the mall, my mind still lingering on that ring. Amidst the hustle and bustle of this summer, there is a feeling growing stronger in my heart. The love I’ve harbored all this time, which has slowly grown alongside Chinatsu since I was a child, now feels more real than ever.

I quickened my pace, eager to get home. I feel increasingly certain about what I must do.
