Chapter 22:
Puchi Pura Midori!
" A Town Where Only I Exist
/ Boku Dake ga Iru Machi "
Midori sits alone in the clubroom, at the kotatsu, alone.
She's been waiting there, for hours.
She talks to us, in voiceover.
Eh-heh! You know everyone, this has been happening a lot recently.
The sky turns this weird orange color, which is kinda scary, and the sun disappears entirely.
And when that happens … Everybody disappears.
Everyone at school.
Everyone in town, too.
… Except for Midori.
Now Midori is all alone.
Midori taps her fingers on the surface of the table, looks outside at the eternal dusk.
… It can get kinda lonely like this—
Midori smiles to herself, a hums a happy tune.
—but it's alright! Sometimes you have to be comfortable spending time with yourself!
Time passes, as Midori fades in and out throughout the clubroom: tidying up, doing homework, re-arranging the furniture, lying on her back, reading a manga.
Don't worry! Everybody always returns, eventually!
Midori sits up from the tatami floor, looks outside.
… Maybe it would be nice to go for a walk, while I wait!
*
Midori, skipping through the deserted streets of Umehara.
The sky above, a foreboding, cloudless orange.
She hums to herself, smile on her face.
Empty storefronts. Empty houses.
Eh-heh! There's the old candy store! Lotte and I love stopping by here!
Oh, and there's the secondhand bookstore Hanako loves so much! Maybe I should buy her a new sci-fi novel for her birthday coming up! (Those books are too hard for Midori to understand, though …)
Oooh, and there's the arcade! Mama and Papa don't let me go there, but we've held some secret FAC(T) club activities there … Don't tell anyone, though! Eh-heh!
Midori passes by the dried-up riverbank.
The riverbank … Tomoe and I found a dead cat there once. It was really sad. Tomoe loves animals, though, and she did a proper burial for it. I love how kind Tomoe is.
Midori stops when she reaches the park.
Here's the old playground. The equipment is sorta old, and rusty, but we still have lots of fun here. Midori remembers coming here as a kid! Lots of good memories here!
She walks over to the swingset, and sits down.
She swings idly for a bit, before standing up again.
She walks over to the slide, and touches it fondly.
Eh-heh-heh … Midori is probably too big for this now …
She walks over to the old see-saw, and smiles at some memory.
Hehe … Tomoe and Lotte were arguing on this last week … That was fun!
She walks over to the wooden bench, its surface worn with decades of use.
She sits down, still smiling to herself.
Midori loves Umehara! There are so many fun things to do, so many happy memories!
She breathes in, out.
I guess I'll wait here for a while!
After all, I'm not completely alone—
… You'll keep me company, right, minna?
And so Midori sits.
And waits.

The Anomaly appears from behind.
Its face is a blur, as it Does Not Belong In This Story or This World.
The Anom▒ly hesitantly approaches the park bench on its not-feet and unbeknownst to Midori and appraoches the pabk bench on itsnotlegs qu uietly . ; The Anomalyly wa▒▓s over to the bench and looks left and looks right as if to make sure no one is watchbing it.
Midori still unaware of the [ANOMALY] she hums to hserself .
And then The Anlomaly sits down beside Midori on the park bench.
Midori turns her head, smiles at the ░░▒▒▓▓██
"Hi there!" she chirps. "I didn't know anyone else was here!"
"░░▒▒▓▓██░░▒▒▓▓██," replies the AONLAMYLY.
The ANM__LY is wearing an over-sized t-shirt with her friend's faces on it.
"I'm sorry, I can't quite understand you," says Midori, a puzzled look on her face.

… Before he leaves, The Anomaly gives Midori a piece of paper, a business card perhaps, which Midori absently slips into her pocket, as The Anomaly fades away, back into the margins of this story.
Midori gazes up at her friends, Tomoe, Lotte, Hanako, and Sana, who have all returned.
The sky, back to normal.
"Eh-heh-heh!" chirps Midori, standing up from the park bench. "You guys are back!"
The other four club members exchange looks.
"… Back? What do you mean?" asks Lotte.
Midori brushes off her skirt, and smiles. "Ehh … Don't worry about it!"
Tomoe looks unsure. "Who … What was that thing?"
Hanako: "I-It was k-kinda scary … It was all blurry … Like a glitch from one of those cyberpunk stories …"
Midori furrows her brow. "'Cy-ber … punk'? What's that?"
Sana: "It was weird. Did you see its shirt? … It had our faces on it … That's really strange, even for me. And Strange is my middle—"
Lotte cuts her off. "Let's not rehash that bit again."
Midori shrugs. "Well, he didn't seem like a bad guy …" She shakes her head. "Anyway, let's go back to the clubroom now! Eh-heh!"
And the five FAC(T) members begin making their way back to school.
*
Lotte, walking, hands folded behind her head: "Anyway, as I was saying—… 'Baumkuchen'."
Tomoe: "… And?"
"That was it. That was all I had."
Tomoe sighs, while Hanako and Sana beside them discuss the new book Hanako's been reading.
Midori, trailing slightly behind, looks at her friends, and smiles.
Noticing Midori lagging behind, Lotte turns her head back.
"… Hmm? What's up, Micchan?"
Midori stops, and smiles.
The other four club members, all turn around.
Midori breathes in, and begins: "… Everyone!"
Lotte, Tomoe, Sana and Hanako face Midori, listening with rapt attention.
"I just wanted to say …"
Midori's friends, slightly confused.
"… thank you for being my friends!!!!!!!"
A long silence.
Lotte smiles, and sighs. "Geez—that's all, Micchan?"
Tomoe blushes slightly. "What a relief, I thought it was something serious."
Hanako giggles. "Micchan's a-always so honest with her feelings."
Sana nods. "The Great Sana accepts your tribute."
And Midori runs to join her friends, as they continue on their way.
As she does, she puts her hand in her pocket, and remembers the paper card sitting inside it …
