Chapter 17:

Dual highschool enrollment

Hazel the mentor

Samantha and I pack up all the gear the demons dropped into my "carry light" bag. It's a bag Matilda designed and enchanted herself. Matilda explained to me that the bag is more of a gateway to a storage area she owns. You can place your items in it or retrieve them with ease, down side it isn't infinite but can carry a good haul of 20 big things. It cost me 500,000 gold only because I was part of the test runs. Going price for one of these now is 100,000,000 gold. That includes life time repairs, usage of storage area, some cases grandfathered in and can be passed onto someone. Then to top it off, guaranteed protection of your things. Something about a limbo spell was explained to me but intricate spell casting is not my cup of tea. Hence why I'm more front lines and simple spells that go boom more times than not. Which would explain why I got nicknamed Hazel of Hellfire during senior year of highschool.

"Hey Samantha." I strike up the conversation as we are walking back from the hunt.

She responds with a "hm?" While looking up at me.

"What that demon say to you?" I ask remembering her yelling at the demon to shut up.

"Oh... He was just trying to get into my head telling me I would regret choices."

"Mmmmm." I reply

"Yea." Samantha says picking up her pace to match mine.

"Speaking of choices, I know school isn't the funnest thing but I was thinking... Maybe we could enroll you into the highschool here? It's where I was able to meet all my friends here at. Along with teach you more thoroughly than what I can do or show you."

"Would I have to take writing or language classes?" She nearly growns.

"We can probably get you out of those since you would technically be dual enrolled." I ponder.

"So what would I be learning?"

"All the supernatural stuff, well most of it, experience is the best teacher for combat. Aba will assign you jobs that line up with what you are learning. At least that's what he did for me."

A golden scroll pops in front of Samantha. She bats at the scroll in the air for a bit before kicking it into a tree. With a defeated look she walks over and picks it up. Fumbling with the ribbon she opens it.

After what seems like a bit of reading, she groans, "Looks like I will have to take a basic translation class senior year. Outside of that, class lessons will line up with hunts." The scroll shines with a few flickers of fire then slowly gets consumed by the flame turning it back to nothing. Samantha drops it half way through. "It wasn't hot but I just..." she opens and closes her hands a few times.

"No I get that. It's like drinking carrot juice for the first time. You want and expect that crunch but it never comes. Took me days to get use to that." I laugh while Samantha bobs her head in agreement with not a convincing smile.

We get home and start getting ready for bed. Samantha tried cooking dinner but burnt pretty much everything again. There was a mostly black circle I assumed was meat, a pile of mush that was green (could have been broccoli) and mashed potatoes that were pretty watery.

Maybe they still offer home economics at the school. Imma have to pull some strings sooner rather than later.

"Thank you for the food." I say and we both eat.

After the kitchen is clean and I'm bathed. I curl up reading a book on the couch while Samantha showers. A pulse of mana goes through the house again. I pause mid sentence in the book. Waiting. Waiting for another pulse or sign. Nothing comes for over a minute so I go back to reading.

We head to bed and Samantha is normally quiet but was extra quiet and even more short answered than normal. Not long into laying down another mana pulse goes through the house.

"Alright. That's enough." I say shutting my book and getting up.

Walking to Samantha's door, I knock gently. After no reply I knock a little harder. Nothing.

"She already asleep?" I ask more to myself as a pulse of mana goes through me again. "Coming in." I state opening the door.

Samantha is laying in her bed, her eyes are closed, moving short quick jerks while mumbling to herself. "No... Stop... Please... I'm sorry..."

Some anxiety rushes over me as those old familiar words echo in my head. A golden scroll poofs into existence by Samantha's feet with my name on it. Quickly I grab it to read it.

[Dear Hazel,

Samantha is having a nightmare. Nothing to fret over but I will tell you something no one else knows. When she is in a partial sleep limbo she will answer questions truthfully and truly speak whats on her mind. Instead of the way she normally deals with it which is shutting people out.

Do with this knowledge as you please, Aba]

"This sounds like an invasion of privacy." I mutter.

"I'm sorry." Samantha cries quietly in her sleep.

Her words are a plea I know all too well.

"You're okay now. You're safe." I whisper kneeling beside her.

I'll be here for her like Heather was for me.

Samantha stirs in her sleep.

"Tell me, is it what the demon said earlier that's bothering you?" I whisper.

Another mana pulse surges heavily from Samantha.

"That's a yes." I mutter.

"I'm... I'm not a whore." Samantha mutters. With white knuckles her fingers clinging to her bed sheets.

I stay quiet with my heart breaking. Waiting in the silent dark room for her to tell me when she is ready to.

"I told Trav I had a long distance boyfriend. I told everyone Trav is a friend... We went to the dance together as friends... I didn't cheat."

"Going to a dance with a friend is no where near close to cheating. Who said that?" I ask defensively.

"I know they are saying it. Its how they are looking at me." She whines.

"Well they are losers with even bigger problems if I get my hands on them." I say firmly.

Samantha scoffs in her sleep. "They would be so screwed." She says with a smile.

"Just think. My power is only a fraction of what yours will be. One day you will be a true force to be reckon with."

"They are scared of me already."

"Have you tried talking to them?"

"I'm scared to talk." Samantha mumbles.

"You're talking to me." I state.

"I get along with old people though."

I feel a part of my soul die.

"I'm old?!"

"-er. Older than me." Samantha turns her head to face me with her eyes fluttering back to sleep.

"Still ouch." I comment to the sleeping girl.

Samantha must have calmed down and drifted into a deeper sleep because she didn't respond after that.

Still hurts that she called me old though. Maybe school isn't the best place for her here. Better message Heather and get her insight on how the kids are.

[Hey, checking in. Along with I have an Earth girl I'm training and could use some pointers. Can we meet up sometime?]

I send the message to Heather and then head to bed since I know she won't reply til morning.
