Chapter 11:
That month of yearning
I kept chewing like nothing had happened, which would have worked better if my fingers had not stopped moving. Seeing Saya become so proactive makes me a bit ... tense. Even though I usually couldn't predict what she was hiding behind her words, now her actions are also peculiar. At least her love for me is shoved right in my face, so even an ignorant person like me could notice it. I resumed eating to finish up whatever was on my plate, as my focus needed a new target and these sweets were not helping me notice those things.
"You are really munching on those sweets, huh? Seeing you eat makes me enjoy it more than if I ate it myself", Saya said nonchalantly.
I slightly choked on the croissant as this came out of nowhere, but maybe more so since I was eating so fast. As I collected myself, I saw a gentle expression on Saya's face that supported her earlier proclamation. Yeah, no doubt you are enjoying this. But her smiling face, did provide me a sense of relief, like I did not make a misstep while walking across rocks over a river.
Upon finishing the food, I hastily asked for the bill as this newly rejuvenated Saya looked like a dangerous enemy that I might not want to fight at this moment. I would be paying considering I have a part-time job on weekends, but sometimes Saya also chimes in. The amount was pretty modest for the quality of the food they served, so I added a slight tip for the good service. Hmph, I am a good girl all right.
Leaving the store, I noticed the sun almost kissing the horizon as it signaled the time for a goodbye to us. As I look around myself, I saw a crowd of people moving across the crosswalk, possibly having waited for quite a long time at the red light. Looks like it's our cue for us to end this "sweet" date, and go back to my regular boring life but at least it was predictable. I really don't like being on the edge of my seat, but being led around for a change isn't too bad.
"Well, see you tomorrow then. Goodbye!" Saying my goodbyes, I turned to the direction of my house, as we had already walked halfway back from that faraway store. As I started to leave, I felt a tug on the hem of my skirt. Looking around, I could see Saya looking down at the road below, a scene I had already encountered before. Her eyes glistened in the shadow of the bright red setting sun. The beautiful sight makes it hard to leave her alone.
"Hmm? What is it, Saya? Don't want to leave yet?" I gently teased, expecting a sharp remark from her.
"Before you leave, I have to say it again. I... I love you!" Saying that, she turned around and ran again, so fast that this time I could not even see her within two minutes.
I felt a sudden fear. The ball is rolling, and I'm sitting in the passenger seat. The hardest thing is that either way, the final decision lies on me. That decision will change both our lives, and I don't wont to half ass it. But for now, I start trudging back in the direction of my house, looking for the gentle abode that was ever so unchanging.
