Chapter 1:
To All the People Who Don't Understand
The hazy light shone through my window, glaring onto my eyes. My alarm clock read 6:57, but that clock is 23 minutes behind (don't ask, it just is). I have to get ready for school at 7 am, but I'm too lazy to pull myself out of bed. I know Heather will come and get me in a minute, so I don't have to bother dragging myself out.
Yup, right on time, as usual, Heather's footsteps approach my room, the sound echoing up the stairway to my room. Heather is my foster mother. I never met my real mother or father, and I'm an only child, so-
"Sylvie! Time to get ready!" Heather calls out as she bursts through my door and into my bedroom.
"Morning, Heather." I manage to mumble through the sheets covering my face. I really don't want to go school today, because my two best friends, Betsy and Maria, are going to be at the Interschool Tennis Tournament, which I, sadly, did not make it into.
"Come on, Sylvie, you have to get ready!" Heather says, trying to encourage me to get out of bed.
"I don't wanna!" I moan, sounding like a four-year-old. It's going to be such a bad day without Betsy and Maria. They are the only reason I willingly go to school.
"Come on, you're not seven anymore." Heather says, lecturing me softly. "You're eleven now, nearly twelve, you have to get up and ready. I've got a blueberry muffin and hot chocolate waiting for you on the table."
I prop my head up against the backboard of my bed and sniff the air. As soon as I do, I smell a familiar smell. Heather's homemade muffins and hot chocolate, a brekky special!!
I dash out of bed and down the stairs, yelling out behind me, "Why didn't you just say that!" out to Heather, and within seconds, I am sinking my teeth into that yummy blueberry goodness.
Heather marches down the stair, laughing. "Well, that's one way to get you out of bed in the mornings!" I nod, my mouth still full of muffin. I swallow the muffin and walk back up the stairs to my room, and reach into my closet for a Greenvay High School uniform, my high school. I'm in year seven there.
I get dressed and grab my bag. Downstairs, Heather has prepared my lunch and I chuck it into my backpack. "Thanks, Heather!!" I say, grabbing the housekey and walking out the door. "Bye, I love you, I'll see you later!" I shut the door behind me and walk to the bus stop, headphones plugged into my ears. I'm listening to my 'walk to school' playlist, as usual.
I arrive at the bus stop and the bus pulls in, just on time. I scan my bus card and get on the bus.
