Chapter 20:
Kitty
"I am not taking the blame for Nigel's incompetence." Abaddon uttered as he stomped toward The Boss's Office. He could not allow Nigel to ruin this for him. If he got demoted, he'd take Nigel down with him. He knocked quickly on the door, not waiting for a response before turning the knob and entering the office.
"Abaddon, pal, what are you doing here?" Larry looked up from the corner where he had been huddled with Gary. He fluffed up his feathers in a poor attempt to conceal whatever they had been huddled around.
"I need to talk to The Boss. Immediately." Abaddon eyed Larry, clocking his suspicious behaviour, but not having the time or energy to deal with these two dodos at this moment.
"I'll let him know you stopped by, can I take a message for him?" Larry asked, pulling out a small note pad and a pen.
"No, I need to see him now. In person. Tell me where he is, Larry, or I'll pluck out all your feathers one by one and feed them to you." Abaddon stepped toward Larry, letting his size do the intimidating. Larry unconsciously took a step back and made himself smaller in response to the threat. As he did, Abaddon was able to glimpse what Larry had been trying to hide. Sitting on a chair in the corner, was the girl. Gary appeared to be mending the holes in her skin where it had melted to Henry's body. She was beginning to look like Frankenstein with all the stitches in her face and chest. She smiled at him.
"Kitty!"
"Beelzebub's Balls! What is that thing doing here?" Abaddon pushed past Larry, kneeling in front of the girl so they were eye level. "Who sent you?" He demanded, staring into her robotic eyes.
"Kitty?" She muttered with a giggle, swinging her legs back and forth in the chair.
"Where did you come from?" Abaddon grabbed her by the shoulders in frustration, shaking her slightly, before remembering how she had melted Henry into a weeping, moaning puddle in the dungeon. He released his grip, but maintained eye contact.
"She can't tell you anything, she hasn't been programmed for speech" Larry said from behind him. Gary elbowed him in the side to stop Larry from saying anything else.
"What do you mean, programmed?" Abaddon turn on his heels and stood abruptly, looming over the two bird brains. He stepped slowly toward them as they both instinctively backed themselves into a corner.
"I, uh, you know, she—" Larry began, when Gary cut him off once again.
"We didn't program her, this isn't our fault." Gary puffed up his chest to try and make himself seem less cowardly, but as Abaddon continued stepping toward them, his bravery wavered.
"Who programmed her, then? Who sent her here? What is her purpose?" Abaddon's voice was rising with his temper. These two idiots have stood in his way long enough, and he'd had just about enough of their antics.
"Well, actually, The Boss sent her." Gary flinched a little as he spoke, expecting backlash, but none came. He looked up at Abaddon, whose mouth was hanging open, a look of confusion spreading over his face.
"What do you mean, The Boss sent her? Explain." He took another step toward the two pea-brains. His eyes narrowed on Gary, who seemed to be ever so slightly smarter than his brother.
"I—I can't say anything else, I've been sworn to secrecy. If I tell you, my feathers will burst into flames and I'll live the rest of my afterlife looking like an extra crispy rotisserie chicken." Gary crossed his feathered arms at his chest, deciding he would rather face Abaddon's wrath than walk around naked and charred for the rest of his afterlife.
"You will regret this, I'll see to it." Abaddon turned toward the girl. He contemplated grabbing her and taking her to his office, but once again remembered her abilities, and he didn't have his cloak. Now he also had to consider if these two morons were telling the truth about The Boss sending her. He stormed toward the door. "Have The Boss call me in my office immediately, or I'll be back." He slammed the door behind him hard enough to rattle the room.
The girl continued kicking her legs in the chair as Larry and Gary moved back toward her, both shaken by the encounter.
"This is bad, Larry. What should be do?" Gary asked as he picked up his needle and thread, and began sewing a large patch of missing skin from her arm.
"I think we need to call The Boss now." Larry said with a gulp.
