Chapter 3:
DARK CARACAL
### ISSUE 3 – BETWEEN SHADOW AND LIGHT
On the adjacent building, the Archivist watched him.
Not like a hunter.
Not like an enemy.
Like a man revisiting a memory he had never buried.
Rakan's voice broke the silence.
"Who are you to me?"
"How did you know I would become the Caracal?"
"How long have you been watching me?"
"And why is this city rotting from the inside?"
The Archivist smiled.
Barely.
Not amusement.
Recognition.
"Because you are not an accident," he said quietly. "You are a consequence."
He paused.
"And I was there... where it began."
Another silence.
"It had a name."
"The Archive Project."
The words landed heavier than a threat.
"It wasn't built to create heroes. Heroes are unstable."
"It was built to refine minds. To remove hesitation. To weaponize understanding."
He spoke without pride.
Without regret.
"We were selected. Scientists. Analysts. Field operatives."
"Not villains."
"Not saviors."
"Just mechanisms inside a system that never planned to remember us."
He inhaled slowly.
"They promised us protection."
"Relevance."
"A future."
A long silence followed.
"And if we failed... we would be erased."
His eyes lifted toward the city.
"We didn't fail."
Another pause.
Heavier this time.
"They chose efficiency instead."
He stepped closer to the edge.
"They deleted the records."
"Scrubbed the names."
"Stripped the identities."
His voice softened.
"They didn't kill us."
"They did something cleaner."
He looked directly at Rakan.
"They made it impossible to prove we ever existed."
Rakan's fist tightened.
"And the city?"
"This is the aftermath," the Archivist replied. "Not chaos by desire... but by abandonment."
Rakan swallowed.
"My father?"
The answer came instantly.
"He was the cornerstone."
Without emotion, the Archivist continued.
"What I am today exists because of his work."
He gestured toward Rakan.
"And you carry a fragment of what he knew."
"Not the whole truth."
He took another step.
"The suit."
"The analysis."
"The reflexes."
"Those are only the first layer."
Then—
The air behind Rakan shifted.
Instinct moved faster than thought.
He turned and caught a wrist before it could strike.
A man stood there.
Calm.
Balanced.
Precise.
No hostility.
No hesitation.
The Archivist's voice returned, almost gentle.
"He didn't come to betray you."
A brief pause.
"I pulled him off the streets and raised him in silence."
"I taught him that loyalty is not fear... but a choice."
For the first time, the stranger spoke.
"He gave me my name back."
"I'm only returning the favor."
The Archivist stepped backward into the shadows.
"You protect a city that has forgotten its victims."
"I exist to remind it of them."
He paused.
"We will meet again, Caracal."
"And when we do..."
"You'll learn what your father kept from you."
Another pause.
"I almost forgot something."
Rakan raised his head.
"The Archive Project did not end with Phase One."
Silence.
Then the words came like a verdict.
"Phase Two..."
"...was called Continuity."
