Chapter 1:
A Shiver in the Neon
Cold rain poured down on the streets of Shibuya. The black asphalt turned into a mirror reflecting the chaotic flash of neon signs above.
Kazuma leaned against the wet iron railing of the high-level Mag Rail platform. He watched the crowd crossing the intersection below. His uniform jacket was damp. The air smelled heavily of ozone, exhaust and wet concrete.
His right hand stayed fixed on the hilt of his katana. The katana was heavy made from high-density carbon steel with a core of raw gravity stone. A low rhythmic pulse vibrated into his palm from the gravity stone reminding him of the power inside the metal.
Kazuma worked as a Vanguard Investigator for Tokyos Supernatural Security Division. Nights his job was boring tracking minor problems or dealing with weak spirits.
Tonight felt different. The air was thick with a static electricity that made the hair on his arms stand up. His comm piece crackled in his ear. The sound was mostly static but his dispatchers voice broke through.
"Kazuma do you copy? The monitors just went off the charts. We are tracking a drop directly over your position. Get there and start moving civilians out of the area right now."
Kazuma said, "I am looking at the crossing." There was nothing out of the ordinary yet a greasy haze over the commercial high-rises.. The pressure was rising fast pressing hard against his temples and causing a dull ache.
Then the sound died. It did not fade away it just stopped. One second Shibuya was a roar, the next second everything was quiet. The noise was cut out of the world leaving a void that made his eardrums throb.
Kazuma tapped his earpiece. It was dead. Down on the street the crowd froze, staring around with terrified eyes. People stopped mid-stride mouths open. No sound came out. Hands clapped over ears as panic spread.
The rain falling through the neon lights stopped hitting the ground. Instead the drops shuddered violently in midair melting into a gray fog. Kazuma looked up at the sky and the low rain clouds exploded outward shredded by something
A massive silhouette hung over the Tokyo skyline large enough to swallow the stars. It was not a creature. A floating mountain of bright silver needles held together by a blinding white core of magnetic force. The creature changed its shape stretching out long limbs that threw a dark shadow over the city.
The Shiver Colossus had arrived. It did not roar,. The vibration was violent enough to destroy solid matter. Kazuma felt a spike of heat in his chest and he coughed, spitting blood. The iron in his blood was churning from the high-frequency waves.
Below him the concrete foundation of the train platform dissolved, turning into a flowing river of gray sand. Across the street a thirty-story office tower. Collapsed, unraveling into a massive avalanche of glittering dust.
Kazuma gripped his sword hilt his vision swimming as his bones vibrated painfully. He drew his blade and the cobalt light of the gravity stone flared to life. He focused his magic inward pulling the air into a pocket around his body creating a kinetic shield.
The destruction on the ground grew worse. The silver giant shifted its weight sweeping a long metallic arm across the district. A whole grid of buildings vanished, reduced to a desert of gray sand. The white core, at the center of the Colossus flashed with a light and a huge stream of silver needles broke away forming dozens of sleek shapes that looked like wolves.
The Shatter Pack was born, their bodies made of -vibrating silver shards. They moved with speed leaving trails of vacuum-sealed air behind them. They bounded over the mounds of sand scaling the crumbling walls toward Kazumas position.
Kazuma shifted his stance raising his katana with both hands channeling kinetic force into the steel. He looked at the hound its jaw a buzzing mass of metal needles ready to shred anything it touched. He let out a breath and the silence was absolute.
He looked at the first hound clearing the guardrail. Its jaw was a buzzing mass of metal needles, ready to shred anything it touched.
He let out a slow, deliberate breath. The silence was absolute, and he was completely on his own.
Kazuma leaned against the wet iron railing of the high-level Mag Rail platform. He watched the massive crowd crossing the intersection below. His uniform jacket was damp. The air smelled heavily of ozone, exhaust, and wet concrete.
His right hand stayed fixed on the hilt of his katana. The weapon was heavy, custom forged from high-density carbon steel with a core of raw gravity stone. A low, rhythmic pulse vibrated into his palm from the stone, a steady reminder of the localized mass trapped inside the metal.
He worked as a Vanguard Investigator for Tokyo's Supernatural Security Division. Most nights, his job was boring. He tracked minor ley line leaks or dispelled weak spirits hiding in muddy subway tunnels.
Tonight felt completely different. The air was thick, charged with a strange static electricity that made the hair on his arms stand up.
His comm piece crackled in his left ear. The sound was mostly harsh static, but his dispatcher's voice managed to break through the noise.
"Kazuma, do you copy? The ley line monitors in the central ward just went completely off the charts. We are tracking a massive atmospheric drop directly over your position. Get down there and start moving civilians out of the area right now."
"I am looking right at the crossing," Kazuma said, squinting through the heavy downpour.
There was nothing out of the ordinary yet, just a greasy haze settling over the tops of the commercial high-rises. But the atmospheric pressure was rising at a terrifying speed. It pressed hard against his temples, causing a dull ache behind his eyes.
Then, the sound died.
It did not fade away gradually. There was no transition or warning. One second, Shibuya was a deafening roar of rumbling trains, screeching brakes, loud pop music, and thousands of shouting people. The next second, everything went completely quiet.
The noise was simply cut out of the world. The sudden emptiness left a physical void so deep it made his eardrums throb.
Kazuma tapped his earpiece. It was totally dead. It did not even emit a faint hiss of white noise. The electronic signals had been completely snuffed out.
Down on the street, the massive crowd froze in unison. People stopped mid-stride, staring around with wide, terrified eyes. Mouths opened and closed, screaming for help, but no sound came out of their throats. Hands clapped over ears as panic spread like wildfire through the intersection.
The rain falling through the neon lights stopped hitting the ground in normal splashes. Instead, the drops began to shudder violently in midair. They vibrated so fast that they melted into a fine gray fog before they could touch the pavement.
Kazuma looked up at the sky. The low rain clouds did not part; they violently exploded outward. They were shredded by something immense dropping from the upper atmosphere.
A massive silhouette hung directly over the Tokyo skyline. It was large enough to swallow the stars and erase the glowing tops of the tallest buildings.
It was not a dragon or a creature made of flesh and bone. It looked like a floating mountain composed of trillions of bright silver needles. The countless metal shards rolled, shifted, and boiled against one another within a fluid cloud. They were held together by a blinding white core of raw magnetic force at the mass's center.
The creature constantly changed its shape. It stretched out long, multi-jointed metallic limbs that threw a dark shadow over three entire city blocks.
The Shiver Colossus had arrived.
It did not roar, but the vibration hitting the city was violent enough to destroy solid matter. Kazuma felt a sudden, sickening spike of heat in his chest. He coughed, spitting a trace of blood onto the floor. The iron inside his own blood was starting to churn from the high-frequency waves.
Below him, the concrete foundation of the train platform did not crack or split. It soundlessly dissolved. Its molecular bonds unraveled in an instant, turning the solid structure into a flowing river of fine gray sand.
Across the street, a thirty-story office tower shook violently for a fraction of a second. Then it unraveled, collapsing inward in a massive, completely silent avalanche of glittering dust.
People in the scramble crossing dropped to their knees by the hundreds. Blood began to leak from their noses and eyes. The high-frequency tremors were tearing their internal organs apart, killing them without a single piece of physical debris touching their skin.
Kazuma gripped his sword hilt tightly. His vision swam as his own bones vibrated painfully against his muscles. If he did not block the frequency in the next few seconds, he would shake himself into a pile of ash inside his own skin.
He drew his blade. The cobalt light of the gravity stone flared to life along the sharp edge, cutting cleanly through the thick gray mist.
He focused his magic inward, pulling the surrounding air into a dense, compressed pocket around his body. He called this technique the Zero Vector. It was a basic kinetic shield, but he manually altered the pressure of the air currents to move in the exact opposite direction of the monster's vibration.
The two opposing forces collided, canceling out the lethal frequency before it could penetrate his skin. The agonizing heat in his chest faded, replaced by the cool, steady weight of his own channeled magic.
The destruction on the ground grew worse by the second. The silver giant shifted its massive weight, sweeping a long metallic arm across the western district. A whole grid of commercial buildings vanished, reduced to a flat desert of gray sand in the blink of an eye.
Then the white core at the center of the Colossus flashed with a brilliant, blinding light.
A huge stream of silver needles broke away from the main body. They fell toward the ruined streets like a waterfall of liquid metal. When they hit the sand, they did not scatter. The needles clicked together under the monster's magnetic pull, forming dozens of sleek, lean shapes that looked like wolves.
The Shatter Pack was born.
Their bodies were made of the same hyper-vibrating silver shards. Their legs moved so fast they looked like metallic blurs against the gray backdrop. They had no eyes or faces, but their featureless heads snapped up in unison, locking directly onto the observation platform where Kazuma stood.
In a dead, silent world, his active kinetic shield was a massive, glowing beacon of dense energy. The monsters could feel the pressure waves of his magic cutting through the vacuum.
The pack moved with terrifying speed. They left distinct trails of vacuum-sealed air behind them as they ran, kicking up clouds of pulverized concrete. They bounded over the mounds of fresh sand, scaling the crumbling walls of the terminal straight toward his position.
Kazuma shifted his stance. His heavy boots sank slightly into the dissolving floor of the deck. He raised his katana with both hands, channeling raw kinetic force into the steel until the blue glow burned like a torch in the gloom.
He looked at the first hound clearing the guardrail. Its jaw was a buzzing mass of metal needles, ready to shred anything it touched.
He let out a slow, deliberate breath. The silence was absolute, and he was completely on his own.
