Chapter 2:

Shattered Core

A Shiver in the Neon

Kazuma stood at the center of the intersection. Shibuya was a graveyard. The Shiver-Colossus blocked the sky. It was a mountain of shifting silver needles. It occupied the entire horizon. It moved like a liquid, yet it stood like a statue. It ate all sound. The silence was a physical weight. It crushed the city. It flattened the buildings. The air was dead.

Kazuma gripped his katana. His vanguard boots bit deep into the cracked asphalt. He was ready. He poured his mana into the steel. The gravity stone in the hilt shrieked. It glowed with a violent, cobalt light. The air around the blade warped. The falling ash hissed as it touched the energy field. This was the strike. He needed it to count.

He lunged. No sound came from his throat. Just the physical force of his forward momentum. He brought the blade down in a brutal, two-handed diagonal slash. The target was the entity's lower mass.

CLANG

The sound did not travel. It hit his jaw. It rattled his teeth. The shockwave crawled up his arms and hit his shoulders. It felt like hitting a mountain of solid lead. The cobalt light exploded against the silver mass.

He stared at the impact point.

Kazuma's heart stopped.

There was no cut.

 Just a faint scrape.

The trillions of needles simply shifted. They absorbed the kinetic force and reset their pattern in a heartbeat.

The counter-strike happened without warning.

The Colossus did not attack. It just existed. The force of his own strike triggered a magnetic reversal in the core. A cluster of needles tore away from the mass. They became shrapnel. They moved faster than the eye could follow.

Kazuma tried to twist. His boots were stuck.

He was too slow.

THWACK

The sound was a wet pop. The needles punched through his vest. They shredded his left shoulder. They ripped through muscle, tendon, and bone. They pinned him to the wall. The force held him there for a second. Then the needles snapped under his weight. He fell.White-hot pain flooded his chest.

He gasped. No air entered his lungs. The trauma had shut his system down. His left arm went dead. It hung at his side like a slab of meat. Blood pooled on the street. It was hot. It was dark. It stained the gray asphalt.

The Colossus began to shift again. It was preparing to fire.

I Gotta Go, I don't have enough Time!, he thought as he dropped.

He saw a rusted iron grate. A maintenance entry. He did not have the strength to lift it. He did not have the time.

He channeled his last reserve of gravity magic into his right boot. He slammed his heel onto the iron. The micro-field hit the hinges. They shattered. The grate caved in. Kazuma fell.He hit the bottom hard.

The sewer water was freezing. It smelled of waste and iron. The impact hit his shattered shoulder. He nearly blacked out. He bit his tongue. The taste of copper forced him awake. The silence here was different. The earth above blocked the entity's dampening field. He could hear the dripping drops of water. He could hear his own heartbeat. He could hear his own ragged, desperate breath.

He leaned against the cold brick. His left arm was a ruin. It was filled with shards of silver. They hummed with magnetic energy. He bit his teeth together to stop himself from screaming. He gripped his katana with his right hand.

He looked up.

The shaft was a telescope. He saw the sky. The Colossus was directly above. It was shedding. Pieces fell from the mountain. They hit the street. They turned into something else. They became predators.

They were needle-hounds.

Kazuma watched. His mind went analytical. The pain faded into the background. He saw the pattern.

Every hound that separated made the core dimmer. The entity was not a solid god. It was a hive. A reservoir of mass.

The realization was a punch to the gut. The academy was wrong. They told him to hit the center. They were dead wrong. The core was too dense to kill. He had to kill the army. He had to bleed the mountain dry.

It was a suicide mission. He was a broken man with one arm. He was going to kill a titan by cutting it into pieces.

A metallic click echoed.

Kazuma turned. Three hounds sat at the base of the shaft. They blocked the exit. Their eyes were liquid mercury. They caught the scent of his blood. They snarled. A high-pitched, vibrating hum filled the sewer.

Kazuma looked at his useless arm. He looked at the pool of blood around his boots. He looked at his sword.

He had no squad. He had no backup. He had only this moment.

He stood up. The water splashed around his legs. His vision blurred. He ignored the pain in his chest. He stood straight. He raised his sword. He locked his wrist.

"Come on," he whispered.

He poured the last of his mana into the steel. The gravity stone ignited. A cobalt light painted the walls.

The hounds lunged.

The first one jumped. A blur of silver. It aimed for his throat.

Kazuma didn't track the movement. He tracked the hum. He pivoted. He swung in a clean, one-handed arc. The blade caught the hound. It sliced it in half.

PLOP!

The creature burst into a cloud of needles. The kinetic force slammed Kazuma into the wall. He stood his ground.

The next two moved together. One went low. One went high.

Kazuma braced. He slammed his gravity field into the floor. He became a heavy, immovable object. The low hound hit his shins. It cracked. Its momentum broke.

Kazuma brought the sword down. A guillotine strike. He drove the blade into the hound's skull. It dissolved into a puddle of inert mercury.

The third hound dropped from the ceiling. It hit his bad shoulder. Pain blinded him. He bit his lip until it bled. He dropped the sword to catch it in a reverse grip. He drove the pommel into the hound's throat. He triggered the gravity anchor.

The weight tore the creature away from him. It slammed into the water. Kazuma drove the blade into its core.

The cobalt light flared. It died.

Silence returned.

The sewer was quiet. The water washed away the dust. Kazuma slid down the wall. He hit the water. He was breathing hard. He looked up the shaft. The core of the Colossus was dim. It had worked.

He wiped his mouth. He picked up his sword.

"Three down, and a million more to go"
