Chapter 2:

reunion of chance

survival: the planet i fight for

Fern's heart slams against her ribs.

The man steps forward, moonlight carving sharp lines across his face. The scar she remembers from childhood—once a thin scratch from climbing too fast—now runs jagged and deep, a canyon carved by survival.

"Fern," he says softly.

Her squad stiffens. Ti's hands curl into fists. Re's eyes narrow. Yi's pupils' contract like a predator. Gs shifts his stance, ready to vanish into the terrain at a moment's notice.

But Fern doesn't move.

"You're supposed to be dead," she whispers.

Her brother smiles—not warm, not cruel, but something in between. Something unreadable.

"Death is a luxury," he replies. "One I couldn't afford."

The ground trembles again, subtle, but wrong. The pulse from the ancient box still lingers in the air like static, humming against their bones.

Yi leans close to Fern. "His energy signature… it's changed. He's not the same as when he left."

"I can see that," Fern mutters.

Her brother tilts his head. "You felt it, didn't you? The seal breaking. The emperor's cage cracking open. This world is waking."

Re steps forward. "What did you do?"

He ignores her. His eyes stay locked on Fern.

"You shouldn't have come here," he says. "Not tonight."

Fern's voice hardens. "You're part of the Calamity?"

"I am the reason it exists."

The forest goes silent.

Even the titans in the distance—those colossal silhouettes moving like mountains with legs—pause, as if listening.

Fern's breath catches. "Why?"

"Because this world was never meant to be safe," he says. "Not for us. Not for anyone. The emperor sealed it to protect himself, not humanity."

He gestures to the box behind him, still glowing faintly.

"We're breaking the chains. And when the new emperor rises, the strong will finally take their rightful place."

Ti growls. "You're threatening the entire continent."

"No," he says calmly. "I'm preparing it."

He steps closer, and Fern sees it—his aura. Once familiar, now warped. Strength radiates from him like heat from a forge. Too much strength. More than any human should possess.

"What happened to you?" she asks.

He smiles again, and this time it's unmistakably sad.

"I survived the uncharted lands."

The squad freezes.

No one survives the uncharted lands.

No one.

Fern's voice cracks. "You were just a boy."

"And now I'm something else."

He lifts his hand.

The earth beneath them shifts.

Not violently, worse. It moves like something alive.

"Go home, Fern," he says. "Protect Zill. He'll need you in the days ahead."

Her blood turns to ice.

"How do you know about"

He cuts her off with a whisper.

"The new emperor must rise."
