Chapter 3:

the warning

survival: the planet i fight for

Fern's throat tightens. The air around her brother ripples; heat distortion, or something far older pretending to be heat. Her squad shifts subtly, forming a loose crescent behind her. They're ready to fight. They're also ready to run.

He notices both.

"You brought a squad," he says. "I hoped you wouldn't."

Fern forces her voice steady. "You vanished for twelve years. You left a blood trail across half the continent. You think I'd come alone?"

His eyes soften, just for a heartbeat. "You were never supposed to follow me."

Yi's voice is barely a breath. "His resonance is… layered. There's something inside him."

"Not something," he murmurs. "Someone."

The ground hums again—low, resonant, like a massive throat clearing beneath the soil. The titans in the distance shift uneasily, their silhouettes trembling.

Re steps forward, blades half-drawn. "If you've bonded with an emperor-class entity, we need to contain you."

He laughs—not cruelly, but with the exhaustion of someone who's already lived the consequences. "Contain me? Re, I walked through the uncharted lands. I buried things there that should never have been born. Containment is a dream for people who still believe in safety."

Fern's pulse hammers. "You're talking like the world is already ending."

"It is," he says simply. "But not the way you think."

He lifts his hand again. The earth responds like a loyal animal—arching, listening.

"Fern," he says, and there's a tremor in his voice she hasn't heard since they were children. "When the new emperor rises, the old laws will break. The strong will ascend. The weak will be… reshaped."

Ti snarls. "You mean slaughtered."

"No," he says. "Reforged."

Fern steps closer, ignoring the warning hiss from Yi. "And what about you? What does the new emperor want with you?"

His expression fractures...pain, pride, fear, devotion.... all flickering like candlelight in a storm.

"I'm not the emperor," he whispers. "I'm the vessel."

The forest holds its breath.

Fern's heart stops.

"No," she says. "No, you wouldn't let"

"I didn't choose it," he says. "But I accepted it."

The glow from the ancient box intensifies, pulsing in time with his heartbeat.

"Go home, Fern," he says again, voice breaking. "Before I stop being your brother."
