Chapter 1:
I Got The Wrong Skill For My Class
Getting out of the car, Ethan rushes to the bathroom at the pull-off along the Grand Canyon. "I told you you should have gone when we stopped for gas." Ethan's dad shouts with a chuckle. "Oh my goodness, Allen, look how beautiful it is, Liz, get out of the car and look," Cindy says in awe, staring at the great expanse of the Grand Canyon. Liz sits in the back of the van with her headphones on, listening to music and scrolling through the latest gossip of her favorite heroes. Allen walks up next to Cindy, standing at the rail, and wraps an arm around her, "It sure is amazing, isn't it, Sweetie?" "Dad, you could've stopped at a gas station or something an hour ago. It's not like we would've missed anything. Were you afraid the Grand Canyon was going to pack its bags and leave?" Ethan says with a huff, shaking some water off his hands after leaving the bathroom. "Holy sh... I mean crap." Ethan exclaims, looking out of his peripheral vision, hoping his dad didn't catch his near slip-up. "Why don't you go and get your sister? I want a family picture." Ethan's mom says, giving him a knowing look about his near slip of the tongue. Opening the door on the van, Ethan climbs in and pulls a headphone away from Liz's ear, "Come on, Lizzie, Mom wants a picture. Did you see anything about Thunder Striker?" "Fine, I'm coming," Liz grumbles. Liz's eyes light up, "Yeah, there was a robbery at a bank, then a high-speed chase. Thunder Striker showed up and totaled their car, but it was the Black Forest Gang. They actually beat up Thunder Striker pretty bad and got away, but Thunder Striker still managed to catch one." "What, no way they beat Thunder Striker, he is the best hero. You have to be joking, right?" Ethan nearly shouts, hearing the news about his favorite hero.
After getting unpacked at their hotel, Ethan and his family show up at a guided tour of an ancient cave where Native Americans painted on the walls. As the tour group went deeper into the cave, Ethan was taking pictures on his phone when he realized he had lost the group. Running, trying to catch up, he stumbled over a roped-off section and slid down an incline. He hit the bottom with a thud, a loud pop coming from his ankle. "Oww, that hurt almost as much as when I broke my ankle in baseball," Ethan grunts through gritted teeth. He looks up the steep incline he just tumbled down, "I can't believe I fell down that and only hurt my ankle." Looking around, he notices more wall paintings. One catches his eye, it shows a figure holding a white ball above its head with small white lines coming from it. "Woo, that looks like a Power Sphere it's holding up." Ethan hobbles further, looking at the paintings, when he trips over some rocks. "Why am I having such a bad day?" he trails off, seeing something shine from the light on his helmet. Ethan clears the rocks off the object to reveal an orb covered in cracks. The orb looks like there is a cloud inside it. "Is that.. Could that be?" he says nervously, his whole body shaking. "If that's a Power Sphere, I will get in so much trouble if I touch it, but who would know if I did. I could become a hero and not have to go to the Power Academy, but if I get caught, I could go to jail, maybe forever." Hesitating, contemplating his options, Ethan hears people yelling for him. Without thinking, he reaches down and grabs the orb, and the orb crumbles to dust in his hands. A voice rings in his head, "You have received a class. Class acquired, Subjugator. Subjugator level one. A window pops up in front of him.
Class Subjugator. Level one. Experience 0/100 Skills - Item enhancement level one. Attributes - Strength - 2 Dexterity - 3 Agility - 2 Constitution - 2 Intelligence - 2 Wisdom - 1 Luck - 1 Attribute Points Available 21
Ethan's eyes go wide in astonishment, "Did I really just get a Class? Oh man, I'm in so much trouble. What the heck am I going to do?", he thinks to himself. "ETHAN, WHERE ARE YOU!" He hears his dad yell. Ethan hobbles over to where he slid down into the section of the cave he is in now. Looking up the light on his helmet illuminates the scariest creature he has ever seen, his dad. "What in the world are you doing down there? Never mind, get back up here. You are in so much trouble!" Allen scowls down at him. Ethan tries to walk up the slope, but with his ankle throbbing in pain, he has to crawl up it. "I'm so sorry, Dad. I was taking pictures of all the paintings and got behind, so I started running to catch up and fell there. I think I sprained my ankle, too," he says to his dad and winces when putting weight on his injured foot. "Oh, for Pete's sake, that's just like you. Getting lost in your own world, not paying attention to your surroundings. Looks like your mom, sister, and I will be enjoying this vacation while you're stuck at the hotel," his dad says jokingly, but with a slight edge to his voice. Ethan's dad puts an arm around his waist, so he can take the weight off his ankle. When the tour group returns, Ethan sees the second scariest creature he has ever seen: his mom. She gives him a telling look, letting him know he is in serious trouble.
That night at the hotel, Ethan sits in the bed, his ankle propped up, while his mom yells at him, "I can't believe you would wander off like that. You're eighteen now, not a child. If you act like this while enrolled at the Power Academy, they won't think twice about kicking you out, and all the money your father and I saved up so you would be able to go would be washed down the drain. Allen, I don't know what to say to him." His mom storms out of the room, leaving his dad sitting in the chair with a big grin on his face. "Hahaha, I haven't seen your mom this mad since you accidentally ran the lawnmower over her rose bush, but you know she is right. You really need to lock in. The Power Academy won't tolerate any foolish behavior." "I know, Dad, I'm sorry those paintings were so cool, and I wanted to get lots of pictures to show Jill and Andy." Ethan hangs his head, clearly sorry for messing up the family vacation. "I'm sorry, Dad. I never meant to..." His dad interrupts him, "There's nothing you can do about it now. We'll probably leave early to do some sightseeing. You can sleep in and order some room service for breakfast in the morning." his dad turns to leave, "I love you, bud, get some sleep." Ethan wakes up just as he hears his family leaving the hotel room. "Alright, now let me check this out." He gives the mental command 'Open Status Window'.
