The sun was blazing, and the light was harsh.
Just after leaving the motel, Damon turned his head slightly.
Sunlight spilled over Laurel. Her long brown hair fell over her shoulders, and her delicate face still held a flush under the fair skin. The faintly exhausted look on her face gave her a strange, magnetic charm.
"Let's go back in," Damon said suddenly.
"Back in?"
Laurel blinked and turned to him.
"We just came out. You already returned the room."
The moment she looked over, she found him watching her.
His dark eyes were filled with interest and possession.
It was different from the way he had looked at her while supervising her training. This was desire. Direct, physical, and impossible to mistake.
The look made Laurel avoid his eyes on instinct. She was fully dressed now, yet somehow she felt more embarrassed than she had while training naked in front of him.
Laurel did not know what to do.
If he had forced her at the beginning, or right after the training ended, she might have submitted with anger and resentment. But now, because he had asked, she suddenly did not know where she stood.
"Forget it. I'll leave some novelty for later."
Just as Laurel was trapped in that awkward silence, Damon spoke lightly.
"I won't supervise your afternoon training. Arrange it yourself."
Laurel nodded on reflex.
Damon had already waved and walked away.
She stood there blankly for a moment, then left too.
She had not gone far before her mother came toward her, worried and angry.
"Are you all right? Did that man do anything to you?"
Laurel shook her head.
"Really?" Dinah Lance clearly did not believe it.
A man had taken her daughter to a motel first thing in the morning. When Laurel came out, her face was red and her legs were weak. As a woman with experience, Dinah naturally thought of that possibility.
Laurel nodded and explained what had happened.
Dinah frowned.
He had not named the real culprit.
He had not abused Laurel in the way Dinah had feared.
He had only supervised her training?
After thinking it over, Dinah decided to observe for now. She had already reported the previous night's incident. Several dead agents were not a small matter, and her orders from above were to hold position for the moment and gather as much intelligence on Damon as possible.
After splitting from Laurel, Damon did not return to Felicity's apartment.
He wandered through the streets instead.
What did a hero need as standard equipment?
A costume and gear.
Since he planned to push Laurel into becoming Black Canary ahead of schedule, both were necessary.
Damon had already thought it through.
The costume could come from Wayne Enterprises. Talia al Ghul's identity had not been exposed yet, and she was currently the largest shareholder of Wayne Enterprises. With the photos Damon had taken as leverage, getting a suit from her should be easy enough.
Basic gear could come from Wayne Enterprises too.
As for Black Canary's signature sonic equipment, he could go to Central City and find Cisco Ramon.
He did not know Cisco.
He had no money.
Was that important?
No.
Without realizing it, Damon had wandered into a park.
Despite the blazing sun, plenty of people were there eating lunch or meeting dates.
Damon found a large tree with shade and sat on the grass. He looked around lazily, thinking he could ask Felicity to contact Talia al Ghul for him after she got off work.
Sunlight filtered through the branches.
Suddenly, a woman darted out from behind the tree.
She had wine-red hair and wore a long black dress. After running over, she looked back as if someone were chasing her.
When she turned, she saw Damon sitting against the tree.
Her eyes lit up instantly.
She turned, hurried straight to him, and sat on his lap. She pulled his arms around her, hooked both hands behind his neck, and kissed him without warning.
She was bold.
Heated.
Completely committed.
As if the next second she would use the sky as a blanket, the earth as a bed, and get right to it.
Her technique was inexperienced, but she was very active. She clung to Damon as if she wanted to melt into him.
"Mm?"
She suddenly let out a small sound as his hands tightened around her and rolled her off his lap onto the grass.
The next instant, he was over her.
He braced his arms above her shoulders, cupped her head with both hands, and kissed her again.
For a second, she was angry.
Then frightened.
But she quickly realized this position hid more of her from view.
After that flash of surprise, she relaxed and responded.
Without realizing it, her act became real involvement.
Running footsteps sounded nearby.
Two men in black suits, black pants, and sunglasses came over, dressed like standard-issue agents. They glanced at the man and woman tangled together on the grass, then quickly looked away.
Even in America, and even in a public park, seeing that level of intimacy made people awkward enough to avoid staring.
"Split up and search."
After scanning the area and failing to spot their target, the two men muttered to each other and separated.
