"Finished?"
Damon listened quietly to Sara Lance, then leaned against the console and raised a finger with a smile.
"I have two questions."
"Ask," Sara said.
"First, why did you not travel to the moment I kidnapped Laurel? Since you can infer the temporal aberration, would it not be better to solve the problem at the source?"
If the Legends had come to Damon then, he might not have pushed Laurel into becoming Black Canary early. The later events might never have followed.
"Too late."
Rip Hunter shook his head.
"By the time we noticed something was wrong, that portion of history had already fixed itself."
"Okay. Second question."
Damon smiled.
"What gives you the right to stop me?"
That question immediately made the Legends tense.
Based on their limited experience, missions rarely went smoothly. This one was clearly no exception.
Sara Lance tightened her grip on her batons.
Captain Cold and Heat Wave raised the cold gun and heat gun.
Heat Wave pointed at Damon with a vicious grin.
"What gives us the right? I can burn you to ash."
Damon looked at Heat Wave seriously.
"Believe me, you cannot."
"Then let's try."
Heat Wave took a step.
Seeing the conflict about to break out, Rip Hunter hurriedly stopped him and said to Damon, "I do not think bringing all your former girlfriends together is a wise choice. You only need to avoid introducing them to one another, and the problem can be solved."
"One, only Felicity is my girlfriend, and at the moment we have not broken up. Two, when I ask what gives you the right, I am not talking about force."
Damon raised two fingers and looked at Rip Hunter.
"You formed the Legends to fight the immortal tyrant Vandal Savage and save your family. You shamelessly dressed it up as saving the world, but did you not travel through time and change history all over the place? Correcting temporal aberrations is your personal behavior. What position do you have to say you must stop me?"
Rip Hunter fell silent.
The others, who had been about to argue, fell silent too.
"But we are saving the world," the Atom said weakly.
Obviously, everyone ignored that explanation.
"I admit we have no standing to demand this from you," Rip said. "But we still have to do it. If we do not stop you, Sara Lance will not only suffer memory damage. She will disappear from our team. So..."
Rip Hunter suddenly shouted.
"Gideon, execute a random temporal jump immediately."
"Yes, Captain Hunter."
Gideon's voice rang out.
The next instant, the Waverider rose sharply and accelerated.
Wind howled.
The engines glowed blue.
With a whoosh, the Waverider vanished.
The violent shaking sent everyone tumbling.
The pressure of the temporal jump made their ears ring and their vision blur, as if their hearts might burst out of their chests.
No one knew how long it lasted.
It felt like hours.
It might have been only minutes.
At last, the shaking slowly stopped, and the Waverider landed.
"Enter stealth mode. Report time and location."
Rip Hunter had not even managed to climb fully off the floor before giving Gideon orders.
"Stealth mode active. Time: 1917. Location: waters near Themyscira."
The team groaned and gradually got up.
Martin Stein found his glasses and put them back on, then asked instinctively, "1917? The year before the end of the First World War? What is Themyscira?"
"Damn it. I hate time travel."
Heat Wave swallowed back nausea and cursed.
"I would rather burn him directly."
Rip Hunter straightened his coat collar and explained, "Themyscira is an isolated island inhabited only by Amazons."
"And only women."
"Sounds like the right place for him," Sara Lance said, half mocking while still watching Damon, who lay on the floor, to prevent him from getting up and starting a fight.
Rip Hunter's original intention had been to take Damon away temporarily and put him somewhere safe. As long as Damon did not pick up Laurel, the Birds of Prey would not meet, and Sara Lance would not be affected. Once the temporal aberration corrected itself, they could erase Damon's memory and send him back.
But Themyscira...
Rip hesitated.
"This place is not friendly to outsiders, especially men."
"Dangerous?"
"If he is careful and avoids being discovered by the Amazons, there should not be a problem. Once the temporal aberration corrects, we will come back for him."
Captain Cold followed up.
"Leaving him here will not create another temporal aberration?"
"It should not. The Amazons are not easy to provoke."
Rip shook his head.
Sara Lance walked to Damon and crouched beside him. She looked at him in silence for a long moment.
"For you, it has not happened yet. But in my memories, Laurel loved you. You got tired of her and dumped her, so I hope you die on Themyscira. But... you did let her live, even if it is only a temporal aberration. So find somewhere to hide. We will come back for you."
"Sounds like something I would do. So... I still stole Oliver Queen's girlfriend?"
Damon grinned.
"You were her first man."
Sara Lance growled under her breath in anger.
"Why do you think I got with Oliver? I only wanted to beat her. In that, too. Bastard."
