Chapter 5:
When the author fell into her novel
Six months went by quickly. Mirae had written a few lines to almost nothing during this time. Her grandmother had long ago started calling her Mirae and said the name even suited her more than Ira. Grandmother Shisha had opened a bakery on the first floor and they lived on the second floor of the two-story building.
“Mirae, deliver these breads and scones to the nearby fruit stall vendor. Remember to collect the money he’d left unpaid as well as today’s.
“Got it, grandma. Later.”
Mirae had lived carefree and without worries all these months. She’d accepted this life now. She may have missed her previous life if she had someone there who cared for her but she had no one. She was an abandoned child.
As usual she was walking around the market buying sweets and her money pouch felt empty.
“Oh no, I spent all my money again. I should ask grandmother for some more”
She walked back to the bakery and heard her grandmother’s sighs as she was counting money and saying that it was barely enough to support them.
At that moment, a thought hits Mirae.
“Oh no. I forgot about wealth. Being hearty and healthy is all good but I should also think of riches.”, thinks so as she looks at her grandma.
She had the writer’s ability. She could just make them wealthy. She headed towards her room and started writing about having a mansion, golds and silvers and many ornaments, all kinds of riches. But none of them turned out to be true.
What she had anticipated about had come out to be true.
She’d lost her writer’s ability. She felt the loss of her powers but it didn’t change much for her as she hadn’t relied heavily on her powers and had already planned ahead. It was true that losing that awesome power made her feel sad but she moved on quickly. She had anticipated such a situation and been ready for it.
She’d become a part of this world now. She had made a fool of herself. What a pity and she thought she had amply prepared herself beforehand.
In her carefree life, a new problem made its way. Now, she had to work if she wanted to live like before and for that she had to find the best paying job and better if it was something she could do with ease.
“Grandma, I should start working now and help you share the burden. Tell me what work pays nicely. I should start looking around.”
“Mmm, I’ve only ever worked with food. I don’t really have much idea about work besides these. You can just work with me here at the bakery, no need to look outside.”
“But I want to try something else, grandma. Something that earns us more than enough money so we can rest and enjoy life more. I’ll look around.”, after this conversation with her grandma she got into a job soon after.
She started with forging, it was an arduous job with a pay that didn’t satisfy her. She only spent a week and even after she was begged by its owner to raise her pay to make her stay due to her talent at forging, she chose to leave looking after another work.
Mirae didn’t dislike the job per se but it was hard, she had to stay for a long time around the fire while it was hot and she felt like she could find something much better than this.
She then became a worker for construction, the payment was good but the long working hours and little free time made her give up on it even after she was persuaded by some colleagues due to her efficiency. She felt like the labor was too much for a single person and that too for long hours without rest. Neither they were given food and they didn’t even allow enough time for water. She admired the people that worked like this daily and persevered but she couldn’t.
After that, she went farming and left soon after not being able to handle too much time under scorching sun, the long hours and even the pay also left much to desire. She tried different jobs only to quit all of them.
After the tiring farm day she reaches home, greets her grandma and heads towards her room. She sneaks out the window, flying to the building’s roof and lies down looking up at the sky with the faint glow of the stars that were slowly making their appearance. She empties her mind and enjoys watching the sky as clouds come and go and stars shine and shrink.
She even tried beast hunting done to control the rapidly growing animals but the pay varied with what she’d killed or caught and it was a gross and not a sure paying job. Moreover she could understand the animal’s pain and torment which made it unbearable for her to continue harming and killing them. Thus, she quit again.
The power of emphasizing with animals had resulted in more problems for her than an advantage. She couldn’t continue this path while she understood the animals' suffering.
Mirae sighs “It seems I really am not made for this world. It’s so hard to continue on with these difficult jobs, with terrible hours and payment leaving much to desire. What should I do? Grandma’s been having a hard time lately with people not paying when buying and writing their name promising to pay in the future. If I don’t find something soon, I should settle for a lesser job."
