Chapter 62:

A Shift

The Northern Light : The Chronicle of Zio

A Shift

The arena held its breath.

A flash of white light tore through the arena.

The compressed lightning struck.

This time, Zio didn't move.

The impact swallowed him whole.

For a fraction of a second, sound vanished. Then the thunder crashed back all at once. Sand erupted in every direction as the shockwave rolled across the arena, forcing nearby spectators to recoil.

Dust billowed upward.

Thick.

Blinding.

Dominic lowered his arm, breathing hard.

“That should have hit.”

The wind shifted.

Not outward.

Around something.

A faint current carved through the haze.

Zio stepped forward.

Unbroken.

But not untouched.

The sleeve of his coat had burned away at the forearm. Faint traces of heat curled into the air before fading.

His gaze remained steady.

Unmoved.

Around him, grains of sand drifted in a subtle, unnatural pattern.

A thin spiral of wind.

Barely visible.

Controlled.

Frost crept across the ground in fractured lines beneath his feet.

***

In the upper tribune, Master Corvus rose to his feet.

“Elegant mana control,” he murmured. “Wind... and ice.”

--

“He's a dual element user,” John said.

Alex gave a faint smile.

“He's still holding back.”

“Dominic won't be enough to make him get serious.”

John and Selene stared at Alex in disbelief.

***

Dominic's pupils shrank.

“You took that?”

No answer came.

Only the sound of sand shifting beneath Zio's feet.

Lightning surged around Dominic once more, sharper and louder than before.

He moved.

Faster.

He closed the distance in an instant, his fist driving forward in a clean, direct strike.

Zio shifted.

Too late.

The punch grazed his face.

A thin line of blood traced across his cheek.

The crowd gasped.

For the first time...

Contact.

Zio's head turned slightly with the impact.

Then it stopped.

His eyes settled on Dominic once more.

Calm.

Colder than before.

Dominic felt it.

A hesitation.

Only a fraction of a second.

But real.

Zio moved.

Not back.

Forward.

The wind tightened around him.

Dominic adjusted instinctively, but frost spread beneath his leading foot for the briefest instant.

A tiny mistake.

Enough.

Zio slipped inside his guard.

Close.

Too close.

Dominic's eyes widened.

He tried to pull away.

Too late.

Zio pivoted.

One short motion.

Controlled.

Precise.

His kick landed.

A sharp crack split the air.

Clean.

Final.

For a heartbeat, nothing happened.

Then Dominic's leg buckled.

His expression shattered.

Not anger.

Not pride.

Only disbelief.

A scream tore from his throat as he crashed onto the sand. The lightning surrounding him shattered at the same instant, as though its source had been severed.

He hit the ground hard.

Breathing ragged.

His hands clawed at the sand.

Silence settled over the arena.

Heavier than before.

Zio stood over him.

Still.

His breathing never changed.

A thin line of blood remained across his cheek.

He made no move to wipe it away.

The referee rushed between them.

“Enough. The duel is over.”

His voice echoed against the stone walls.

***

Moments later, medical personnel rushed into the arena. They knelt beside Dominic, examined his shattered leg, then carefully lifted him onto a stretcher.

Dominic's breathing remained ragged, his face pale, his jaw clenched against the pain.

Zio stood where he was, breathing evenly. His expression held neither triumph nor pity.

The referee lowered his hand.

“The winner. Guild representative. Zio.”

No cheers followed.

Only the wind sweeping loose grains of sand across the arena floor.

The spectators remained silent, their eyes fixed on the arena as they struggled to comprehend what they had just witnessed.

***

In the tribune reserved for the Royal Forces, the atmosphere was even heavier.

Commander Thorne was no longer in his seat.

Commander Lucas pressed his lips into a thin line.

Vice General Eren leaned back slowly.

General Arthur kept his eyes on Zio without blinking.

“It is fortunate His Majesty already retired to the resting chamber,” Commander Bryan said quietly.

***

Elsewhere in the tribune, Nyssa stood with her hood still shadowing part of her face. The blue glow had faded from her silver eyes, leaving only a faint smile.

She turned and hurried toward the waiting room, Zio's blade resting in her hand.

Rask slowly shook his head.

“Trod taught him that?”

Teodor's eyes remained on the arena.

“No. That's not Trod's style.”

“Another mentor?”

“Perhaps.”

Elyn let out a quiet breath.

“If you know him, talk to him. Soon.”

Rask glanced at her and nodded.

“You're right. He'd make a good frontliner.”

Leon's laughter broke the silence.

“Didn't think that bet would actually pay off. Small stake. Big return.”

He grinned.

“We're celebrating tonight.”

***

Beneath Solcarys' bright sky, Zio stood still and drew a slow breath before letting it out.

He brushed the remaining sand from his clothes, then turned away from the center of the arena and headed toward the waiting room.

Sand crunched softly beneath his boots.

***

The waiting room was quiet.

The stone walls still held the afternoon heat. A narrow window cast a strip of pale light across the floor, catching the fine grains of sand scattered beside the benches.

Nyssa sat alone.

Zio's straight-blade rested across her lap. Her fingers traced the sheath absently while the distant murmur of the dispersing crowd drifted through the corridor.

Footsteps approached.

Steady.

Familiar.

She looked up.

The door opened.

Zio stepped inside.

For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.

Nyssa moved first.

She crossed the room in quick strides and wrapped her arms around him.

“Sorry.”

Zio blinked.

“For what?”

She pulled back, though her hands still lingered on his sleeves.

“For not telling you the truth.”

He studied her for a moment.

“You got paid?”

“Yeah.” A grin spread across her face. “Pretty well, actually.”

Zio walked past her and picked up his coat from the bench, brushing the dust from the fabric with calm, measured movements.

Nyssa held out his blade.

“Here. Your blade.”

He accepted it with a nod.

“Thank you.”

Silence settled between them.

Nyssa watched him, waiting.

Zio noticed.

“You're done?”

She nodded.

“All done. So let's leave before this turns into a problem.”

He gave a small nod.

Nyssa slipped her hand into his, warm and firm, then gently tugged him toward the door.

Outside, the corridor had grown quiet. The roar of the arena had faded into distant murmurs.

They stepped out together.

The door closed softly behind them.

Sunlight still stretched across the empty benches as a faint breeze stirred the scattered sand along the floor.

***

The sun blazed high above the Royal Forces Colosseum.

Major Michael stepped into the arena.

“Please give your applause to both of them.”

At last, the tribunes erupted with applause.

When it finally subsided, he continued.

“Next, we will present the Royal Forces' magical weapon technology.”

Attendants moved onto the arena floor and began preparing the platform at its center.

***

High above, in one of the tribunes, Alex rose from his seat and stretched lazily.

“John, go collect our money from the Royal Forces.”

Selene looked at him, slightly surprised.

“But the event isn't over yet, Master.”

Alex gave a small shrug.

“There's nothing else worth watching.”

John grinned as he glanced around the arena.

“Huh. Where are Zio and Nyssa?”

“They probably left already,” Alex replied. “Let's head back too.”

Without another word, the three of them turned and disappeared into the corridor beyond the tribune.

In another section of the stands, Leon leaned back with a sigh.

“So? Heading home or staying?”

Teodor rose first, as calm as ever.

“We're leaving.”

Leon pushed himself to his feet.

“Alright. You guys go ahead. I'll collect my winnings first.”

Elyn remained seated for another moment. Her gaze swept across the surrounding tribunes.

She found no one.

After a quiet breath, she stood and followed the others.

***

While the crowd's attention shifted toward the upcoming weapon demonstration, the command tribune remained noticeably restrained.

General Arthur stood with his hands clasped behind his back, his gaze fixed on the arena below.

“Eren. Find out everything about that young man named Zio.”

Vice General Eren inclined his head.

“Understood.”

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

“If he isn't affiliated with the Staff Guild, make him interested in joining the Royal Forces.”

“I understand.”

Below them, applause echoed through the colosseum as preparations for the next event continued.

***

The stone road stretched north from the colosseum, uneven beneath the steady rhythm of hooves.

Behind them, the massive structure still stood against the bright sky. The cheers had yet to fade completely, though distance was already swallowing them.

Zio guided the horse at an easy pace.

Nyssa sat behind him.

Closer than usual.

Both arms wrapped around his waist instead of the saddle.

Warm air brushed past them. A light breeze stirred the trees along the roadside before the leaves settled once more.

The steady rhythm of hooves filled the silence.

“What should I cook later?” Nyssa asked.

Zio kept his eyes on the road.

“Anything you want.”

“Hmm... alright.”

Her arms tightened around his waist ever so slightly.

The sounds of the city gradually faded behind them.

Open fields replaced stone walls and crowded streets.

Nyssa rested her forehead lightly against his back.

Neither of them spoke again.

They continued north until the Royal Forces Colosseum had dwindled into a pale silhouette on the horizon, swallowed by the afternoon light.
