Volume 1: The Boy Summoned by Mistake
Episode 1 (Part 2) :The Monster of the Forest
The Monster of the Forest
The trees split apart as if they were nothing more than fragile branches.
CRAAASH!
A gigantic figure emerged from the cloud of dust.
A chill ran down Kazuki's spine.
"..."
Th-That's... no bear."
The creature stood over eight meters tall. Its body was covered in black scales, with four curved horns and crimson eyes that glowed like burning embers.
Every breath it took sent leaves and dirt flying.
Lyra stepped forward.
"Get back."
"Huh?"
"Now!"
Kazuki didn't argue. Every instinct in his body was screaming at him to run.
"My instincts are yelling, 'Get out of here!'..."
The beast smiled.
Yes.
It smiled.
"So, you're the guardian who protected the seal..."
Its voice was so deep it made his chest vibrate.
"Five hundred years have passed."
Lyra raised her staff.
Small magic circles appeared beneath her feet.
"I won't let you go any farther."
The monster let out a mocking laugh.
"You alone?"
BOOM!
It vanished.
"W-What?!"
Kazuki barely managed to catch it.
Just a shadow.
The next instant...
BAAAAM!
Lyra was sent flying, crashing through three trees.
"Lyra!"
"I... I didn't even see the attack!"
The girl coughed as she struggled to stand.
Blood.
There was blood at the corner of her lips.
Kazuki clenched his fists.
"I can't do anything..."
"I'm just an ordinary student..."
"How the hell am I supposed to fight something like that?"
The beast slowly walked toward Lyra.
Each step made the ground tremble.
"You're weaker than your predecessor."
Lyra struggled to breathe.
"I... can still fight..."
She raised her staff once more.
Dozens of magic circles appeared across the sky.
"Rain of Light!"
Thousands of glowing spears rained down.
SHAAAAA!
The entire forest lit up.
The explosions filled the air with a massive cloud of smoke.
Hope filled Kazuki's eyes.
"Did she defeat it?"
Then...
A massive claw emerged from the smoke.
Not a single scratch.
"Was that all?"
Kazuki's heart sank.
"We're dead."
He couldn't think of any other conclusion.
The beast raised one hand.
A black sphere began to form.
The air grew heavy.
The flowers withered instantly.
Even the light itself seemed to fade away.
Lyra's eyes widened.
"N-No...!"
"Run, Kazuki!"
"And leave you here?!"
"RUN!"
Kazuki took one step...
...but his legs refused to move.
"Move..."
"MOVE!"
Nothing.
Fear had frozen him in place.
The sphere had already grown as large as a house.
"Disappear."
The beast made a simple motion with its hand.
The sphere shot forward.
Everything happened too fast.
Kazuki closed his eyes.
"So this is how it ends..."
...
But the explosion never came.
He slowly opened one eye.
A golden barrier had appeared before him.
An old man with white hair stood there, holding a sword wrapped in blue flames.
"I arrived just in time."
The black sphere slammed into the barrier.
BOOOOOOOOM!!
The shockwave uprooted countless trees.
The old man didn't even take a single step back.
The beast frowned.
"You again...?"
The old man smiled.
"I thought that after losing five hundred years ago, you'd have learned to stay sealed away."
Kazuki blinked.
"Losing?"
"That monster... lost to this old man?"
"No... wait..."
"What kind of old man is this?!"
The old man turned his head slightly.
"Boy."
"Y-Yes?"
"Do you know how to run?"
Kazuki answered without thinking.
"Yes!"
"Perfect."
The old man's smile widened.
"Because in five seconds, you're going to run for your life."
Kazuki swallowed hard.
"Five seconds?"
The old man pointed his sword toward the sky.
The clouds began to part.
A colossal magic circle appeared above the forest.
The magical pressure was so overwhelming that even the beast stopped smiling.
"It's been centuries since I last used this technique..."
Blue flames engulfed the entire forest.
For the first time, the monster took a step back.
And Kazuki realized one thing.
He had arrived in a world where there were people capable of splitting mountains with a single swing of a sword.
