Chapter 80:

Tanimaki and the Dragon Hunt (Part 4)

Welcome to the Republic of Meows!

“Are we done here? If you’re not going to borrow any books, then get out.”

Bianca tried to drive Tanimaki and the others away, her attitude openly dismissive.

“W-What’s with that attitude?! The people who were taken could end up getting eaten!”

With his strong sense of justice, Debiru couldn’t help raising his voice.

“Easy, Debiru. Calm down. By the way, I heard this library has a large collection of books written in ancient script. I’d like to examine them.”

Mayutan calmly explained their purpose to Bianca.

“Fine, but they’re written in ancient script. You won’t be able to understand any of it, will you?”

Bianca gave Mayutan a doubtful look.

“It’s all right. Deciphering ancient scripts is my field of study.”

Mayutan answered with complete confidence.

Tanimaki and the others were led to a dim, silent corner lined with shelves of old books.

“Everything around here is written in ancient characters that look like some kind of magic spell. But... no one can read them, so we were even thinking about throwing them away. I never expected someone who could actually read them to come to this town...”

Bianca said, sounding both impressed and somewhat taken aback, then returned to the counter.

“All right. There should be something in here about dragons. As far as I know, the last time a dragon appeared in the Republic of Meows was two hundred and thirty years ago. We should learn as much as we can here before we fight one.”

With that, Mayutan picked up a book and began his research.

“That’s Mayutan for you! You really were planning to save the people who were taken!”

Debiru said, sounding impressed.
