Chapter 5:

Fukō Na Yogen

Elements Of The Five Spirits Volume 2

Kai sat cross-legged atop the mountain ledge, the cool morning air brushing past his face. A phantom shiver ran down his spine, followed by a long, heavy sigh. He stared out into the vast horizon, his mind racing with uneasy thoughts.

Who the hell was that? Why did that energy feel so incredibly ominous? And why… why did it feel so strangely familiar?

Behind him, soft footsteps rustled through the grass. Alyssa stepped up to the edge of his meditating spot. The mountain wind blew past, whipping Kai’s hair across his forehead as he turned his head to glance at her.

"Hey. What's up, Alyssa?"
Alyssa let out a tired sigh, pointing her thumb over her shoulder back toward the palace grounds. "Natalie said we have to get going now."

Kai turned slightly, rubbing his chin with a low grunt. "Yeah... I suppose we don't have much of a choice."

He sighed again, staring into the far distance for one last quiet moment before pulling Kitsunebi’s dark sunglasses over his eyes.

He stood up, sliding his hands into the deep pockets of his hakama, and began walking alongside her down the dirt path.

"You know, Alyssa," Kai murmured, his voice dropping an octave. "I have a really strange feeling."

Alyssa glanced sideways at him, tilting her head. "What is it, Kai?"
Kai raised his chin, staring up at the passing clouds above. "I have this feeling that a piece of me out there is very bad.
" He shook his head, exhaling sharply. "I don't know."
Alyssa’s expression softened. She reached over, placing a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "It's going to be okay, Kai."

When they reached the inner courtyard of the royal palace, chaos was unfolding. Servants, noble guests, and lower-ranking guards were panicking, scurrying back and forth in a frantic hurry. Near the central armory, Princess Mei stood tall, barking direct orders to ranks of heavily armored soldiers.

Alyssa immediately picked up her pace, running over to her sister. "What's happening, Mei?"
Mei looked back at her with an intensely stern expression. "Walk and talk," she said, taking off at a brisk, long-strided run down the grand marble hallway.

Alyssa and Kai exchanged a quick, worried look and immediately sprinted to keep up with Mei’s long strides.

"Apparently, some unknown girl came out of nowhere and attacked Kira and Zin," Mei reported, her jaw tight. "They were both beaten severely."

Alyssa’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "T-That’s impossible! They’re elite royal guards! They’re among the rare master spellcasters who can wield multiple elemental compounds!"
Mei nodded gravely.
"I know. But they were completely overwhelmed. This could very well spark a war."
Kai, running silently beside them, scoffed under his breath. "Why a war?"

Alyssa glanced back at him over her shoulder. "Because it happened on unauthorized territory right outside the capital. And whoever she was, she forcibly seized an elemental energy crystal from royal land." She turned her focus back to her sister.
"So what is Dad going to do about this, Mei?"
Mei let out a stressed sigh.

"Honestly? Some of the higher guard, along with myself and Dad, have to leave the country immediately to hold an emergency summit with the neighboring kings and queens.

Roy and Karai are staying behind to lock down and protect the capital."

Kai spoke up, his tone serious. "Can we do anything to help?"
Mei shook her head firmly as they arrived at the grand doors of the throne room. "No. You focus on your own mission.

If you run into trouble on the road, you hold full legal authority to defend yourselves by any means necessary.

But I must warn you—where you're heading, be extremely careful. You are still a wanted fugitive for major crimes in the outer territories. You got lucky meeting reasonable people here, but the lords out there are strict. Be prepared; the worst is yet to come."

Mei paused at the heavy wooden doors, turning back to give them a brief, warm look. "Natalie is waiting near the main gates with your transport. Good luck, you two. Be careful."
"You too, sister," Alyssa said softly.

Alyssa turned and took off toward the city gates, with Kai trailing right behind her. As they burst through the archway, they saw a large, covered horse carriage waiting on the stone road.

From beneath the white tarp in the back of the wagon, two heads popped out. Scarlett grinned, waving her hand wildly.

"Hey! Let's go, Kai! We're burning daylight!"

Beside her, little Cooper let out a huge, beaming laugh. "YEAH!" He giggled, tumbling back into the hay pile inside.

Up front, Natalie held the reins, offering a gentle, encouraging smile. Kai smiled back and climbed into the wooden bed of the carriage, while Alyssa hopped up onto the bench next to Natalie.

Natalie slapped the leather ropes against the horses' backs with a sharp yelp. "HA!"
The horses broke into a steady trot, pulling the carriage forward onto the long, winding dirt road leaving the capital behind.

Inside the back of the carriage, Scarlett settled against a crate, watching Kai as he rhythmically snapped his thumb and middle finger together, creating tiny, dancing sparks of fire in the air.

"You know, Kai," Scarlett started, leaning her chin on her palm, "you don't really talk much about your family. I mean, everybody knows the legends about your mom, Yui, and your dad, Shinzo. But do you have any siblings? Cousins?"

Kai stopped snapping, the tiny sparks fading into smoke. "Yeah... I have other family members. But we don't talk much. Pretty much not at all, to be honest. On both sides of the family."

Scarlett tilted her head, her curiosity piqued. "Both sides?"
Kai nodded, looking out at the passing trees.

"Yeah. The Kazan clan and the House of Red Feathers. But those two families hate each other's guts. The only reason they haven't wiped each other out is because of ancient laws they're forced to accept."

Scarlett raised an eyebrow in confusion. "What the hell? Those two families actually follow laws?"

Kai leaned his head back against the wooden frame of the wagon with a heavy sigh. "All I really know is that if a family member marries someone from the opposing clan, any child born with awakened latent potential forever holds joint heritage and blood rights from both clans. It's supposed to force a permanent truce."

Scarlett’s eyes went wide. She leaned back, letting out a low whistle. "Wow... that's heavy. That basically means you're rich as hell by bloodline."

Kai rubbed the back of his neck, scoffing quietly. "Not really. See, if I was declared dead or banished from my families... and if my parents went missing for a long enough time... the two clans wouldn't have to honor the truce anymore. Which means who knows what kind of crazy stuff they're pulling behind the scenes right now."

Scarlett’s playful expression softened into a frown. She reached out, gently touching his shoulder. "It's okay, Kai. We're going to help you sort all this out. But... you never actually answered my question. Do you have a sister or not?"

Kai looked out at the passing scenery, his brow furrowing as he let out a long breath.

"Honestly? I don't even know my damn self. My parents never mentioned anything about me having a sister."

He paused, biting his thumb thoughtfully as brief, scattered memories flashed through his mind—quiet late-night whispers between Shinzo and Yui, locked doors, and sudden, unexplained evasiveness whenever he asked about his infancy.

"They've always been secretive about the past," Kai admitted, looking back at Scarlett. "I guess they probably had their reasons."

Beside them, Cooper leaned over the edge of the carriage, watching the forest trees pass by with a bright, innocent smile. Scarlett looked over at the boy, her expression softening, before turning her eyes back to Kai.

"Kai," Scarlett said gently, her tone becoming surprisingly serious. "Your parents... you know it's okay to doubt them, right? It's okay to disagree with them. You don't have to blindly follow every single word they ever told you like it's absolute gospel."

Kai’s brow darkened. A low, defensive grumble rumbled in his chest. "I can't just turn my back on my mom or my dad. That would be completely disrespectful. I'd hate myself if I did that. They're my parents—my own flesh and blood. I can't just throw that away."

Scarlett sighed softly, offering a sympathetic nod. "Look, I get it. I know things feel different now compared to when you were living with them. Back then, life was simple and great. But you're basically a grown man now, Kai. You're nineteen years old. You're your own person."

Kai leaned his head back against the frame, closing his eyes beneath his dark shades. "I suppose so... Either way, we've got a long journey ahead."

"Yeah," Scarlett agreed quietly. "Sadly, we do."

Kai opened one eye, looking at her with a faint, wry smirk. "Besides... one thing my old man always taught me is that 'the only thing stronger than fear is curiosity.'" He crossed his arms, exhaling slowly. "I'm fine, Scarlett. Really."
Scarlett smirked back, shaking her head. "Yeah, yeah, okay, Kai... Though I have to admit, I'm pretty curious myself about what the hell Fujidai is up to right now."

Far away, across vast mountain ranges and desolate badlands, Fujidai walked alone down a dusty, forgotten path. He had long since ditched his torn traveling cloak, leaving him in his battle-worn attire. He let out an irritated sigh as a sudden gust of wind kicked up.

A massive, grotesque avian shadow coalesced beside him as the Onmoraki—a demonic, spectral bird spirit—manifested in mid-air, flapping its dark, eerie wings.
"You look like absolute shit, Fujidai," the bird cackled mockingly.

Fujidai scoffed, throwing a lightning-fast jab that snapped right past the bird's beak. "Shut the hell up, jackass! What the hell are you even good for besides being an annoying, useless demon bird?"

The Onmoraki squawked in annoyance, flying close and slapping Fujidai across the back of the head with its broad, feathered wing. "Don't get smart with me, boy! I'm here to help you!" The bird preened its dark feathers with its beak before casting a sharp, ancient eye on him. "I am here to train you."

Fujidai paused, his hand resting on the hilt of his unsheathed Kusanagi blade. He narrowed his eyes in skepticism. "Help me? Train me how?"

The Onmoraki yawned lazily, hovering in place. "You see, the heavens locked away humanity's true potential ages ago to keep mortals from transcending their place.

Your power comes from elemental manipulation, yes, but at its core, it relies on fundamental energy—chi. Most humans put arbitrary limits on how they mold it, dividing it into chakra, qi, ki, and so forth. But energy is inherently boundless. The ancient gods put limits on humans because they feared what you could become. I can train you to break those artificial ceilings entirely."

The Onmoraki swept its dark claw through the empty air, cleanly severing the fabric of space and opening a swirling, dark portal of spatial energy.
"Let's go," the demon bird croaked, flying straight through the rift.

Fujidai raised an eyebrow, staring at the portal for a brief second before smirking, stepping through the vortex as space sealed seamlessly behind him.

Meanwhile, miles down the overgrown forest trail, Natalie pulled hard on the reins, bringing the horse carriage to a complete halt before a dense, ancient treeline.
Kai hopped out of the back of the wagon, stretching his arms over his head. "So... why are we stopping here?"

Natalie opened a thick, leather-bound tome, running her finger down a page of faded parchment. "Well, Kai, according to the ancient chronicles, many non-human species were driven out of the main territories centuries ago by the expansion of the primary martial clans. They settled deep within these untamed forests. Legend says these lands still preserve ancient, raw power from the era when the old gods walked the mortal realm."

Kai executed a clean backflip off the edge of the wagon, landing gracefully beside her. "Woah! Really? Hell yeah!"
THWACK!
Alyssa leaned over from the driver's seat and delivered a swift, open-palm smack to the back of Kai's head. "Shut the hell up, Kai! Stop shouting!"

"OW!" Kai yelled, rubbing the back of his head with a pained grimace. "What was that for?!"

Scarlett climbed down from the back, carefully holding Cooper as he giggled. "Oh, I remember reading about this area too. Isn't there a hidden temple city nearby where the beastfolk live?"
Kai scratched his messy hair, tilting his head in complete bewilderment. "What the hell are 'beastfolk'?"

Before anyone could answer, the surrounding ground trembled violently. Thickets of thick, glowing energy vines erupted from the earth, shooting upward like coiled vipers! In a fraction of a second, the vines wrapped securely around Kai, Alyssa, Scarlett, Cooper, and Natalie, hoisting all five of them high into the air!

From the shadow of the dense treeline walked a tall, authoritative woman clad in elegant, ancient traditional robes. She possessed long, plush wolf ears atop her head and a thick, sweeping wolf tail behind her. Her eyes burned a piercing gold, and her hands glowed with a brilliant, swirling light-blue energy. Surrounding her were dozens of armed guards, all bearing distinct animalistic features.

"Why are you humans trespassing in our domain?" the wolf woman demanded, her voice echoing with commanding authority.

Kai dangled upside down in the vine grip, blinking blankly at them. Alyssa grunted, actively struggling against the constricting plant energy, while Natalie maintained a remarkably calm demeanor.

"We are merely travelers passing through," Natalie called down respectfully.

One of the beastfolk guards hurried up to the wolf leader, pointing a sharp finger up at Kai and whispering urgently into her ear. The wolf woman's sharp golden eyes locked onto Kai's face.
"You, boy," she commanded, her gaze cold. "What is your name?"

Kai raised an eyebrow behind his shades. "My name is Kai. Kai Kazan."

The wolf woman’s eyes narrowed instantly. With a flick of her wrist, the energy vines dissipated into harmless light, dropping the entire group down to the grass.
She turned to her guards, waving a hand dismissively. "Take them to the High Elder. She will decide what to do with them."

Before Kai or Alyssa could draw their weapons, several swift rabbit-folk and tanuki guards darted forward, precise light-strikes tapping the group's primary chakra points. A strange, heavy numbness washed through their limbs, rendering their physical bodies temporarily limp.

"What the hell...?" Alyssa gasped, trying and failing to mold her water chi as her body refused to respond.
The wolf woman silently led the procession as the guards escorted the bound travelers through a hidden mountain pass.

Suddenly, the dense treeline opened up, revealing a breathtaking sight: an enormous, bustling subterranean city built directly into the surrounding mountain walls. Hundreds of beastfolk—adults going about their daily trades and children playing in the streets—paused, peeking out from wooden windows and stone archways to watch the human captives with quiet curiosity.

Kai looked around in genuine awe. "Man... there are a lot of them here."
Natalie leaned her head slightly toward him, whispering softly. "Like I told you, entire populations were displaced during the ancient wars."

They finally reached the steps of a colossal stone temple in the heart of the city. Sitting atop a raised dais inside the main hall was an elderly woman. Slithering around her frame were dozens of iridescent snakes, which intertwined at her side to form a solid, gleaming gold walking cane.

She possessed dark brown eyes, long, fluffy pink hair, and glowing golden magical tattoos pulsing across her arms.
"Ah..." The elder chuckled softly, her dark eyes fixing directly on Kai. "I have been expecting you all. Welcome."
She slowly pushed herself up from her seat, leaning lightly on her snake cane. "Kai Kazan... I know you have many burning questions. Follow me. The rest of you may explore our sanctuary, provided you break nothing."

Kai watched her suspiciously, his eyes narrowing, but he nodded to the others and followed the elder down a quiet, dimly lit stone corridor.

The pink-haired elder walked with a serene, permanent smile resting on her face. "You see, Kai... I know everything that transpires in these lands. And I know the heavy doubts currently eating away at your mind."

She paused before a large, flat section of the stone wall, wiping her hand across its surface. The rock flared with brilliant, magical light, revealing detailed, living art inscriptions depicting Kai, his friends, and the unfolding threads of fate.

Kai stared at the intricate wall art, his brow furrowing. "What is this supposed to prove?"
"It proves far more than meets the eye, young warrior," the elder interrupted brightly, her smile broadening.

She tapped a specific section of the stone. The wall pulsed violently as a new, terrifying image materialized. The glowing projection depicted a tall, sharp-featured girl with ash-gray tipped black hair, surrounded by swirling, chaotic blue flames. As the image played, she grew taller and wilder, letting out a silent, manic laugh as dark energy radiated from her form.

The inscription beneath her read a singular name: Asami Kazan.
Kai’s eyes widened in sheer horror. His heart hammered against his ribs as his hands clenched into tight, shaking fists, his knuckles turning pale white.
"This is crap!" Kai shouted, his voice echoing loudly down the stone hall. "This is absolute garbage! My mom and my dad would have told me! If I had a sister, I would have known about it! I would have known about all of this!"
The pink-haired elder glanced back over her shoulder at him, her golden tattoos pulsing with calm, ancient magic.

"Like you said yourself earlier today, Kai... 'The only thing stronger than fear is curiosity.'"

Kai’s knees buckled. He fell to his knees on the cold stone floor, staring up at the smiling elder with raw, turbulent anger and confusion burning in his eyes. He slammed his right fist directly into the stone ground, cracking the floor beneath his knuckles.
"Who the hell are you, huh?!" Kai demanded, his voice cracking with emotion. "Tell me, damn it! Who are you?!"

The woman tilted her head, her calm, unshakeable smile never fading for even a second.

"My name is Rose," she replied softly. "That is all you need to know for now, young Kazan."
"Then tell me my future!" Kai growled, glaring up at her. "If you know so much, why won't you just tell me everything?!"

Rose let out a quiet, gentle sigh, her dark eyes looking down on him with deep pity.

"If I were to tell you everything that lies ahead, you would spend every waking breath trying your absolute hardest to alter the course of fate," Rose explained calmly. "But know this, young Kazan... whether you are ready for it or not..."

She stepped closer, leaning down slightly as her golden tattoos flared bright.

"...Everything is about to change for you."
