Alyssa glanced back down the dim stone corridors, hearing the faint echo of Kai’s agitated voice bouncing off the ancient walls. She slowed her pace slightly, a knot of worry tightening in her chest.
"I hope Kai is okay," Alyssa muttered, looking over her shoulder.
Natalie glanced at Alyssa, offering a calm, reassuring smile. "Kai can handle himself. He’s a tough boy."
Scarlett strolled alongside them with her hands clasped behind her head, remarkably unbothered. "Yeah, besides, he needs to be away from us for a bit. Give him some space to process."
Cooper trotted happily between them, his wide eyes taking in every detail of the subterranean beastfolk city.
Walking ahead of the group, their wolf-eared escort turned her head slightly to acknowledge them. "So, what are your names, humans? You can call me Lazuli."
"I am Natalie," the scholarly girl replied politely. "This is Princess Alyssa, Princess Scarlett, and the curious little boy is Cooper."
Lazuli glanced back, raising an eyebrow with a dry smirk. "Two princesses following a wanted criminal? This generation is such a pesky one."
"Hey! He’s not a damn criminal!" Alyssa snapped, her fists clenching at her sides. "He’s a good guy!"
Scarlett joined in, shouting over Alyssa’s shoulder, "Yeah, watch your mouth, damn it!"
Lazuli brushed off their outbursts with a simple wave of her hand. "Whatever you say, humans."
Natalie stepped forward to diffuse the tension. "Lazuli, can you tell us more about the High Elder?"
Lazuli’s dark wolf ear twitched. "The Elder? Honestly, we don't know much about her. She’s ancient—far older than she looks, even though she maintains the appearance of youth. She possesses vast knowledge, and back in the old days, she and other ancient beings were the sole reason this temple and city were built. Nobody knows how she accomplished it. She is remarkably powerful, but her true origin remains a complete mystery."
Natalie nodded thoughtfully. "Quite a tale."
Alyssa narrowed her eyes, still lingering on the mystery. "Why did she already know Kai?"
Lazuli shrugged carelessly. "Who knows? Could be a number of reasons, but that’s not for us to figure out. We have far bigger issues to worry about around here."
Scarlett raised an eyebrow. "What kind of issues?"
Meanwhile, deeper within the temple, Kai remained on his knees, his mind racing as he struggled to process the revelation about his sister. Everything he thought he knew about his family and his destiny was shifting beneath his feet.
Rose’s serene smile dropped, replaced by a rare, solemn intensity. "Kai Kazan... you are strong enough to do so much more than this. You have no idea how vast your true potential really is. I can teach you the ancient ways of godlike power—the very forces the gods wielded when they walked the mortal realm."
Kai looked up at her. The shock in his eyes began to give way to a burning spark of hope.
Rose stepped closer, gently poking his forehead with her index finger. "First, however, we have a crisis to address. Our city is currently at war with an invading faction of elves. Will you help us?"
Kai stood up straight, his jaw setting into a hard line. "Yeah."
Rose added thoughtfully, "And remember, Kai... you are not fully human. You carry yōkai blood. Kitsunebi trusted you with his dark sunglasses and his power for a reason. Use them."
Kai looked down at his trembling hand. Channeling a sudden burst of raw energy, he punched the heavy stone wall beside him, instantly shattering a massive slab of ancient rock into dust.
Rose masked her surprise, but what Kai didn't realize was that he had just destroyed a sacred stone board—the very ledger used to record the past, present, and future to weave fate itself.
As Kai's hand flared with brilliant light, he shouted,
"ZAO!"The shattered wall instantly reversed its destruction, stitching itself back together perfectly. Rose stared at the restored wall, realizing the energy shift had rewritten the very properties of the stone.
She let out a rich, musical laugh. "Come on, kid. We have a war to stop."
Kai followed her down the hall, his brow furrowed. "Why are you at war with the elves anyway?"
Rose sighed, glancing back as her traditional robes rustled. "They have always been hostile toward our kind. They reject peace, launch assassinations, and attempt to seize our sovereign territory."
Kai frowned. "That’s terrible."
"Indeed," Rose agreed. "You and your friends can help resolve this. Most of their common foot soldiers don't even wish to fight in this war; their leader is an imposter posing as an elf lord, keeping them trapped in blind obedience."
Rose stopped abruptly in the middle of the corridor, smiled, and snapped her fingers.
In a blinding flash of spatial magic, the hallway vanished, and they were instantly sitting in the high council chamber. Rose calmly sat down in her massive throne, resting her snake cane against her knee. Kai blinked at the sudden spatial shift, adjusting to the instant movement without complaint.
A moment later, the grand doors swung open, and the rest of the group walked in.
"Kai! Are you okay?" Alyssa asked, rushing forward.
Kai twirled Kitsunebi’s dark sunglasses on his index finger, sliding them onto his face with a faint smirk. "Never better, Alyssa."
Alyssa let out a soft sigh of relief.
Before anyone could ask further, Rose’s hands flared with a soft light-blue aura, forcibly pressing the group down into the guest seats around the council table.
"Listen closely, young ones," Rose commanded warmly. "As I told Kai, our territory is under siege by an elven host led by a false ruler. I need your assistance to breach their command."
She raised her palm, projecting a crystal hologram that displayed memories of the invading army. "These elves threaten our realm. But if we eliminate their false ruler, we can end the bloodshed and forge a true alliance."
Natalie raised her hand, interrupting in a sharp, pragmatic tone. "If you want our help, we need something in return."
Rose raised an eyebrow, amused. "I am listening."
Kai sat up straight in his chair. "If you want my help, you have to train me and my friends. And I need your scouts to locate the lost dragon egg."
Rose sighed softly, tapping her chin. "That is quite a heavy request... but consider it done."
Rose snapped her fingers. Out of the shadows stepped two reptilian humanoids clad in traditional, battle-worn garments.
"Opal! Kipo!" Rose called out.
Opal bowed low. "How may we serve you, High Elder?"
"Find me the lost dragon egg," Rose ordered with a bright smile.
Kipo gave a quick salute. Sniffing the air, his hand flared with a radiant, pure-white aura as he sliced his claw through empty space, tearing open a dimensional wormhole. With a swift backflip, Kipo vanished into the portal.
Opal offered a sharp grin. "We'll be back soon." She leaped into the rift right behind him as the spatial tear sealed completely.
Scarlett scratched her head in utter confusion. "What kind of magic was that? That didn't look like standard yōkai portal travel."
Rose leaned forward, her eyes twinkling. "It is a rare gift handed down from the ancient gods who once walked among mortals. Kipo can step between dimensions to bypass physical distance instantly, guided purely by his spiritual aura."
Alyssa tilted her head. "How does he even know where he's going without getting lost?"
"He uses sheer willpower and concentrated energy to pinpoint coordinates," Rose explained. She stood up, pressing a hidden switch on her throne that opened a descending stone staircase behind the dais. "Follow me."
As they walked down the brightly lit tunnel, Rose shared ancient lore. "Before the higher deities—kami like Izanagi, Izanami, Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, and Susanoo—separated their realms from the mortal plane, a covenant was forged. Two supreme beings, Lord Ame-no-Minakanushi of the Central Heaven and Lord Enma of the Underworld, created an relic of pure potential: the Orb of Boundless Power. It unlocks a mortal's latent abilities and removes their natural limits."
At the bottom of the stairs, Rose pushed aside a massive stone wall, revealing a glowing sanctuary. Resting on a pedestal was a massive, radiant orb shifting between brilliant hues of green, gold, and white.
"Who wishes to go first?" Rose asked, stepping aside.
Alyssa walked up cautiously and placed her palm against the sphere. A surge of light washed over her.
Natalie tapped her scouter glasses, watching the numeric readout skyrocket. "Her power ceiling just expanded past 4,500,000 units!"
Ancient water-like tattoos expanded across Alyssa’s arms. She stared at her hands, feeling an immense, boundless flow of chi.
Rose smiled softly. "Your control over water is no longer restricted by mortal limits, Alyssa. You can learn any technique now."
Giggling with excitement, Alyssa jumped up and down before shoving Scarlett forward.
Scarlett exhaled, placing her hand on the orb. A second pillar of light erupted, her power scaling rapidly until it matched the dangerous baseline of elite royal knights like Roy. Scarlett looked at her hands as her structural sensory magic instantly mapped Alyssa's genetic chi signature, effortlessly copying her compound water framework.
Hell yeah, Scarlett thought, exchanging a high-five with Alyssa.
Finally, Kai stepped up and pressed his palm against the glowing artifact. The machine hummed violently, pulse-waves of golden light flashing erratically as if the relic itself was confused. When the light faded, Kai looked down at his hands. He didn't feel drastically stronger, though he could now freely weave chakra, qi, and elemental chi without resistance.
Confused, Kai looked over at Rose.
Rose offered a reassuring smile. "Do not worry, Kai. You already possess immense combat training; your dormant power simply requires deliberate conditioning rather than a raw release."
With another snap of her fingers, Rose teleported the entire group back outside to the gates of the temple city.
"We should inspect our forward defensive line," Rose noted, walking ahead. "Our vanguard is already stationed near the border."
Scarlett stretched her arms, stepping back toward the temple steps with Cooper. "I'm going to stay behind here with Cooper just to keep an eye on things, okay?"
Kai gave her a thumbs-up. "Got it."
Kai, Alyssa, and Natalie followed Rose toward the front lines. As they walked, Kai asked, "So Rose, what's your plan if their main force attacks us directly?"
Rose chuckled, her ears shifting into small, feathery owl tufts. "My people and I can handle the front lines. Besides, I intend to fight too. Have fun out there—I'll be watching from above."
Before anyone could reply, Rose transformed into a colossal, snow-white barn owl, flapping her massive wings and taking to the skies in a flash of wind.
Alyssa’s mouth hung open in total shock. "Whoa... that woman is full of mysteries."
They pushed forward to the border encampment, where Lazuli was standing over a tactical map table, furiously barking orders to stressed soldiers. "This is reckless! Shift the southern flank immediately!"
Lazuli turned around, her wolf ears twitching in annoyance. "Alyssa? Where is the High Elder?!"
Alyssa rubbed the back of her neck nervously. "Uhh..."
Kai pointed up at the sky. "She turned into a giant owl and flew off. I have no idea where she went."
Lazuli smacked her own forehead in frustration. "Great! We need a field commander to march the vanguard right now!"
Kai glanced at Alyssa before quietly stepping backward, slipping into the shadows to scout ahead on his own.
Alyssa took a deep breath, placing a hand over her chest. "I can do it."
The beastfolk soldiers looked at her skeptically. "Are you sure about this, kid?"
Lazuli nodded sharply. "Alright, Princess. Lead the way."
Alyssa marched to the front lines just as the elven vanguard arrived. The Elven Commander stepped forward, his eyes cold and condescending. "Are you their representative?"
Alyssa narrowed her eyes, standing tall. "Yes, I am. I am Princess Alyssa Morningstorm. What your army is doing is completely unnecessary. If we talk this out, we can expose your false ruler and work together—"
The Elven Commander raised his hand, cutting her off with a bitter laugh. "No, no. Save your speeches, little girl. We want war. Prepare yourselves. As soon as the sun hits noon, the battle begins. Prepare your loved ones."
He turned on his heel and marched back toward his lines.
Meanwhile, Kai sneaked through the upper halls of an ornate, isolated stone estate near the border.
This place is way too fancy for a temple structure in the middle of a forest, he thought, scanning the corridors.
Suddenly, an overwhelming, suffocating spiritual aura washed over the hall.
The air pressure plummeted so violently that Kai was forced to stop dead in his tracks. Cold sweat broke out on his neck as a shadow detached itself from the far wall.
A figure stepped slowly into the pale light, his tone hauntingly calm and ominous.
"So... we finally meet, Kazan boy."
The man stood shirtless, revealing pale white skin covered entirely in intricate black tattoos. Long, spiky white hair swept down past his waist, framing a sharp face illuminated by glowing red eyes. A cold, menacing smile spread across his lips as he locked eyes with Kai.
"You can call me Nurarihyon."
