Chapter 7:

Elves War Start Now!

Elements Of The Five Spirits Volume 2

Alyssa looked at the weary beastfolk soldiers, her posture straight and her expression resolute. "Listen up, everyone! They wanted war, so we'll give them war! We need to hold the line and stall until Kai Kazan defeats their leader!"

Uncertain murmurs rippled through the ranks, some soldiers nervous under the new command. Raising her hands toward the overcast sky, Alyssa channeled her newfound boundless chi, altering the atmospheric pressure until cool, soothing rain began to fall across the battlefield. The steady rain washed away the rising tension, calming the soldiers' nerves.
Lazuli looked up in amazement as the troops broke into loud cheers. "The Goddess of Water!" a soldier shouted.

Clouds condensed around Alyssa, lifting her into the air. "Let me guide you toward a future of peace! Follow me, and we win this together!"

Far away in the spirit realm, Yui Kazan, Shinzo, and the Sister of the Present came to a sudden halt.
"Why did we stop?" Yui asked, her brow furrowing.

The Sister of the Present stared into her crystal orb, her pale face washing over with shock. "Fate... it has shifted. The threads are rewriting themselves."

Shinzo stepped up, looking into the projection. "What are you talking about?"
Through the crystal, as well as on a grand scrying mirror in Lord Enma's underworld throne room where Enma and Amanozako watched, the image of Kai standing off against Nurarihyon unfolded.
"Why are you posing as an elf leader?" Kai demanded, his body remaining tense.

Nurarihyon smirked down at him. "Because it brought me close enough to secure that weapon—and to eliminate that girl."

Kai’s eyes narrowed into a glare. He lunged with a fiery right hook, but his fist struck empty air. In a flash of terrifying speed, Nurarihyon appeared at his side, driving a brutal kick into Kai’s ribs that blasted him through the stone wall, cracking the masonry.
Kai slowly pushed himself off the rubble, coughing up dust. How did he move like that?
"My ability manipulates your very perception," Nurarihyon chuckled, stepping through the dust. "You can't win."

Suddenly, sharp pain flared across Kai’s entire body, as if invisible blades were piercing his flesh. Kai snapped his teeth together, forcing his mind to focus, and looked down—his physical skin was completely fine. But before he could process the illusion, Nurarihyon launched him into the air with a swift kick, following up with blinding speed to spike Kai back down into the dirt.
Outside, Alyssa lowered her hand, signaling her forces. "NOW!"

The two armies collided with a deafening roar. Leaving the front lines to Lazuli, Alyssa dashed toward the central estate where Kai was fighting.

Inside the ruined estate, Kai took blow after blow, bleeding as he struggled to process the sensory illusions overlapping his reality. I can't hit him. He’s moving fast and hijacking my senses. I need to adapt right now.

Kai braced his stance, deliberately letting a heavy punch land in his gut to pinpoint Nurarihyon's actual physical position. Sensing the real body, Kai countered with a rapid left jab, catching Nurarihyon on the lip and sending him skidding back.

Nurarihyon wiped a line of blood from his mouth, his smile widening. "Not bad, Kazan. Now try this."

Nurarihyon multiplied into dozens of identical copies, encircling Kai. The clones swarmed him, striking from every angle. Kai grabbed one by the neck and headbutted it, causing it to dissolve into dark mist. The mist expanded, creating an illusion of a rapidly spinning sun and moon that distorted Kai's balance and gave him a split-second headache.

Taking form as a giant shadow, Nurarihyon brought a massive foot down, crushing Kai into the floor. As Kai fought his way free, a clone shaped into Yui Kazan appeared before him. Caught in the illusion, Kai’s counter-punch drove straight through the projection's chest.

"You are a disappointment, my son," the illusion of Yui whispered coldly, backhanding Kai through a wooden pillar.

As Kai hit the wall, another illusion morphed into Alyssa, kneeing him across the face and slamming his head down. "Come on, Kai, fight back! You're pathetic!"
As the illusions faded back into Nurarihyon, the white-haired yōkai stood over Kai, laughing mockingly. "So weak."

Kai pushed himself up, blood dripping from his chin, his eyes burning with fury. "You bastard... messing with my mind, making the people I care about attack me... I will destroy you!"
Kai reached into his pocket and pulled out Kitsunebi’s dark sunglasses.
In the underworld, Lord Enma shouted through the scrying link, "Nurarihyon! Do not let him put those on!"

Nurarihyon kicked the glasses out of Kai's hand, sending them skidding across the room, before blasting Kai back with a heavy kick.
Kai closed his eyes tightly, standing tall in the center of the room.
Closing your eyes won't stop your other senses, Nurarihyon’s voice echoed from everywhere at once.

Kai smirked. Yeah, I know.

With a burst of speed, Kai retrieved the glasses, slid them over his face, and shut down his physical sight entirely. Retracting his awareness inward, Kai activated thermal spatial navigation within his mind's eye. By tracking the distinct heat signatures and atmospheric friction warped by his Shapeless Phoenix Flames, he pinpointed Nurarihyon’s exact physical mass, completely bypassing the mental illusions.

I just need willpower, Kai thought cleanly. He snapped his fingers, deploying a Zào temporal wave that forced the surrounding space to snap back into its true time alignment.
In the real world, Nurarihyon paused, confused by Kai's sudden, absolute calm.
"Kill him now!" Enma roared in his mind.

Nurarihyon rushed forward, but Kai’s body moved on pure yōkai instinct. He swatted Nurarihyon's lead hand aside, following up with a heavy right hook that sent Nurarihyon crashing through the far wall.

Outside, the battle raged fiercely. Alyssa cast arcs of lightning through the rain to repel the advancing elven vanguard.

"We're being pushed back!" Lazuli called out over the chaos.
An explosion echoed from the nearby beastfolk village as a detachment of elven raiders breached the perimeter. Alyssa summoned a massive water tower, flooding the area to extinguish the fires, and signaled a unit to reinforce the town.

Kai... hurry up, Alyssa thought, wiping rain from her eyes.
Back inside, Kai absorbed the kinetic shock of another heavy exchange, physical damage registering directly against his spiritual endurance. He wiped his bloody nose, catching his breath. This is a problem. I need more time.

In his inner mindscape, the Shapeless Phoenix rested beside him, its voice soft. Do you need assistance, father? All you have to do is ask.Kai’s brow twitched. Not happening, birdbrain.

Nurarihyon closed in, throwing a punch that Kai blocked. Kai countered with an uppercut, but Nurarihyon redirected the strike, launching a spinning kick. Kai rolled along the floor, summoning feathered clones to buy space. Nurarihyon dissipated the clones, teleported behind Kai, and grabbed his shoulder. Kai delivered a backward headbutt, but Nurarihyon answered with a heavy strike of his own, buckling Kai's knees before launching him skyward with a pair of brutal uppercuts.

High above the roof, Kai caught Nurarihyon's wrist in mid-air, drew his katana, and severed the yōkai's arm in a single fluid slash, kicking him through the crumbling ceiling into the rain above.
Nurarihyon’s arm instantly regenerated as he hovered in the downpour. Below, Alyssa caught sight of the high-altitude clash through the rain clouds. "What the..."
Nearby, Scarlett placed Cooper safely inside a stone sanctuary before leaping into battle. She manipulated blood whips to bind a squad of elven elite soldiers, turning the liquid into hardened red crystals. "Alyssa! Now!" Scarlett yelled.

Alyssa dropped down beside her. Joining hands, they channeled a combined compound technique: Time Freeze: Absolute Domain. A twenty-mile radius surrounding the city froze in place as the sun slowly crested the horizon.

Scarlett caught her breath, looking up. "Damn... the battle's still going."
Alyssa sighed softly, watching the frozen battlefield. "War doesn't end in a day."
Overhead, Kai and Nurarihyon traded high-speed strikes, shockwaves ripping through the clouds. Nurarihyon opened a series of spatial portals surrounding Kai, throwing rapid strikes from every direction. Kai ducked and parried, minimizing the damage.

Executing a precise time-skip maneuver, Kai slipped past the portal array and struck Nurarihyon square in the chest. Nurarihyon staggered back, grabbed Kai's arm, dislocated the joint, and drove a knee into his gut, sending Kai crashing into the forest below.

Kai hit the ground, bouncing off the terrain before coming to a rest near the treeline. Gritting his teeth, he forced his dislocated shoulder back into place with a sickening pop, sweating blood as he pushed himself up. He's strong... this fight could go on for a full day.

Nurarihyon descended like a meteor. Kai lunged forward, but Nurarihyon spun around him, grabbed his hakama, and delivered a devastating heel kick that sent Kai tumbling through the thick treeline.

At the edge of the beastfolk village, the elven reinforcements pressed forward against the frozen border. High Elder Rose arrived at the front lines, her tattoos glowing a deep purple.
Smiling serenely, Rose raised her hands. "For those who have fallen—your time has not yet come. Rise, and show those who doubted us their mistake!"

The earth illuminated as fallen beastfolk warriors were restored, surging back to life filled with vital energy. Rose tore her long sleeves away, transforming her snake cane into heavy combat gauntlets. She slammed her hands into the earth, establishing a realm-wide domain buff that empowered her army.

The Elven Commander scoffed, snapping his fingers. A young elf girl with short white hair and silver eyes stepped forward, taking her stance opposite Rose.
"Let's go, young one," Rose smiled, floating up into the air as glowing orbs revolved around her.
In the underworld, Lord Enma leaned back on his throne, his gray eyes cold with frustration. "This is taking too long. Why won't he die?"

Amanozako watched the scrying mirror closely. "He's losing ground, my Lord. It's only a matter of time."

In the forest, Kai sprinted through the trees, weaving past spatial tears opened by Nurarihyon. As Nurarihyon attempted to retreat into a closing portal, Kai lunged forward, grabbing the edges of the spatial rift with his bare hands and forcibly tearing the portal open.
Reaching through the tear, Kai grabbed Nurarihyon by the collar and slammed him violently onto the ground.

Kai stood over him, blood dripping from his brow, his eyes cold behind his dark glasses.
"We aren't done yet."
