Chapter 19:

All Good Things Come In Three, And Two More Are Yet To Come

Blood Sugar Rush!

Outside, sitting at her favorite table at the Sweet Dreams, Evelyn lets her gaze wander about. The beverage she ordered, just plain table water atop the table in front of her, has remained untouched since the waiter brought it to her.

Evelyn(thought): Two days have passed since the incident with that Colonel. Nothing seems to have happened in the meantime. Ume and Bee respected my wish and did not turn up at all, Gertrud only briefly came over to check on how I was doing once per day. She truly is such a kind soul, even though she tries to hide it with her roughness. I... had quite some time to think things through thoroughly, and I think I-

"Why hello! I don't think I have seen such a fair lady here before! May I ask for your name?"

Evelyn, puzzled to have her thoughts interrupted, quickly turns around to determine the source of the voice, finding it behind her left shoulder. A man with a broad charming smile, maybe around her age. His greenish-brown eyes, as well as his dark grey hair, about five centimeters long and the wrinkles on his face add character to his appearance.

Evelyn: My name is none of your concern. I am a regular here, but I have not seen YOU here before.

"Oh, pardon me. I just had to speak to you and completely forgot my manners over that, it seems. Please, let me try again."

He walks around her, now stopping on the left front side opposite to Evelyn.

Carl: I am Carl. It is nice to meet you. My niece owns this place, so I come here every now and then to support her.
Evelyn: ...By talking to random people who just want to enjoy what they ordered?
Carl: Dear lady, please don't try to fool me. You have not drunk once from that glass of water.
Evelyn: Excuse me? Did you stare at me all this time?! How rude!
Carl: I'm sorry, but I couldn't help it. Somehow, the way you spaced out was fascinating to watch.

A shiver runs down Evelyn's spine. She grabs the glass and swiftly drinks it up.

Evelyn: I am leaving. Goodbye.
Carl: No, wait-!

But before Carl can say anything in response - or maybe rather in defense - Evelyn has already rushed toward the entrance of the Sweet Dreams. However, not without her obligatory, but badly timed back pain kicking in again to make her twitch before she reaches the door and disappears inside. She goes to pay for her drink, then promptly leaves from there using the other entrance to the left side to avoid him.

Evelyn(thought): I cannot believe it. I cannot believe it! What was that just now?! Pah!

Clearly in a huff now, Evelyn continues walking down the market square, into the direction of her house. Just then, a ringtone, almost sounding like it was otherworldly, interrupts her enraged escape.

Evelyn(thought): What on earth is that noise? Somehow, it sounds like it was coming from my bag...

She stops, opening her bag to see what's going on in there. It turns out that Evelyn's yellow glucose meter inside of it is the source of the unusual sound, flashing like crazy. Evelyn reaches inside to pull it out, then stares at it for a bit.

Evelyn(thought): ...How the heck do I turn this off?! I was not told how this new device works! Erm... just try the large button in the middle!

Evelyn immediately acts on the thought, and the strange sound stops along with the flashing. Instead, the display now shows a live video from Bee. And looking at it, everybody could tell the striped little fellow seems to be in a bind.

Bee: Hi, Evelyn. Good to see you.
Evelyn: Hello. Is that... a video call?
Bee: Yeah, you could call it that. I contacted you via the Honeycombat.
Evelyn: This is amazing. However... You calling means an enemy appeared again, right?
Bee: Actually... no. I'd like to talk about this with all of you at your house. Is that okay with you?
Evelyn: Sure, I do not mind. There is no mess, and there has never been one.
Bee: Thanks so much! I'll gather the rest, and we will meet up in front of your house.

The screen goes black, signaling that the call has ended. With a bit of a questioning look on her face, she puts her device back into her bag and moves on.

Evelyn(thought): What a surprise, I was completely oblivious about this function of my blood sugar meter. But if there is no enemy, I wonder what else was so important that Bee contacted me...

And just like that, Evelyn keeps on walking home, wondering about why Bee wanted to see everyone.

------------

In Evelyn's living room now, the three women and Bee have gathered once again. Evelyn, Gertrud and Ume sitting on the couch, each of them with a glass of water on the table in front of them. Across from the chosen heroes, Bee floats before them with a visibly stressed countenance.

Bee: Thank you all for coming. And Evelyn, I hope you had some time to process everything, if only a tiny bit.
Evelyn: I am fine now, I think. Thank you for granting me the opportunity to clear my head.
Ume: Uhm... I also want to apologize for what happened. That was awful and you didn't deserve any of this. I wish our first encounter after such a long time would have been a happy one instead of turning out the way it did.
Evelyn: Thank you for your kind words. I am okay again, really. So do not worry. None of the bad things happening were your fault.
Bee: I'm glad to hear that. However, what I was calling you for...

Bee stretches out its right foreleg to summon its wondrous tablet, making it float and tilt so that the rest of the group could see the display.

Bee: We have a problem. Look at this.
Evelyn: I... have no clue what the problem is.
Gertrud: Me neither.
Ume: Maybe I could figure out what the issue is if I had more information, but I'm literally seeing this display for the first time. Would you mind explaining what exactly the problem is here?
Bee: Alright already. Then more precisely.

The worried bee points at one of the constantly glowing honeycomb cells around the golden yellow one. The white one. Then Bee starts pounding onto it.

Bee: See? Here! This! Right there!
Gertrud: I still don't get what you mean.
Ume: Wait... each of these cells represents a legendary warrior, right? We are three right now. Why are there four glowing symbols, then?
Bee: Thank you, finally! Exactly that, one hundred points for you!
Evelyn: Hold on. Then do you mean...?
Bee: That's correct! One of them awakened during your absence. And it's The Maverick, of all people! I tried to hold back for you, but we really can't ignore this any longer.
Evelyn: But... that is good news, right?
Bee: Yes and no. It's good that we have one more potential ally, but VERY bad that they are on their own. With no idea what the mission is, no guidance... nobody can tell what will come of it. And that is awful. If we don't find them in time, who knows what'll happen. The worst-case scenario would be that the bad guys convert them to join their side instead!
Gertrud: Okay, that is really bad. So are we going to find them as our next goal?
Bee: Precisely. This is the best thing to do, for our sake and for The Maverick. Let's give it all we have.
Ume: About that... I might have a clue of what's going on.
Evelyn: Really? Please, tell us, Ume!
Ume: Well... yesterday, I heard a weird rumor spreading throughout the campus...

--------

The sun is shining brightly over Amari Town High School. The school's bell rings, and shortly after, more and more students leave for home, or maybe to go out for another hour or two to hang out. A group of teenage girls are chatting leisurely nearby as they head back.

"Have you heard this rumor? Yesterday, they say, a female, all in white, with a beautiful dress and odd powers turned up, saving the day."

"I heard! Someone was in danger, and that mysterious person came to the rescue with... erm... what was it again?"

"I think it was said to be cotton or something. She appeared out of nowhere from above, nimbly hopping through the air as if she were stepping on clouds and just made a bed of fluffy cotton to save a falling person. That saved their life! They started calling her a 'Cloud Fairy' because of this."

"Actually... I don't think that was that much of a big deal."

"Huh? Why? That's awesome, isn't it?"

"Well, if you ask me..."

The girl speaking right now, with platinum blonde, long hair, tied into two short pigtails on either side of her head, flashes a slight grin as her light blue eyes glint.

"That was something any decent person would have done, don't you agree with me, girls?"
