Chapter 20:

The Maverick Is... Well... The Maverick

Blood Sugar Rush!

Back in Evelyn's house, the discussion over The Maverick continues.

Evelyn: ...So these are the rumours you heard, Ume? Hopping through the air and all that actually sounds like it could be another warrior.
Ume: That was just my thought. The Hive Five apparently are able to do the wildest things, and I wouldn't be surprised if all of this is true after what I've witnessed so far.
Gertrud: ...'The Hive Five'. Where did you get that from?
Ume: Ah, that. I asked Bee to give me all the intel we have on this whole magical stuff. Information is a valuable resource, especially if you're dealing with hazardous situations like us.

As Ume pushes up her glasses like a pro, Bee smugly confirms with a nod.

Bee: Anyway, this is very valuable intel. That at least implies that The Maverick seems to be on the good side. A female again, huh? Needless to say, we still should try to find her soon. Better bee safe than sorry.

Ume pokes Evelyn on her shoulder, leaning in near her ear.

Ume: ...Is Bee serious here?!
Evelyn: Unfortunately, yes. That seems to be Bee's thing.
Ume: Okay? Huh.

She leans back again and their conversation goes on.

Gertrud: I understand we have to find her. However, I would rather not dance around the elephant in the room. What about this Colonel?

Clearly uncomfortable with that, the others begin expressing deep concern by exchanging worried glances.

Gertrud: He appeared to be far stronger than everything we have faced so far. We were lucky he did not actually attack us, but we should not just assume that he will play 'hide and seek' with us forever. What are we going to do if he charges at us for real? I am pretty sure we are no match for him right now, and that scares me. I'm not only worried about Evelyn's safety, but all of us.
Bee: I agree with that. This is a big problem, and all the more important it is to gather all your teammates, and fast. The more we are, the higher our chances of winning. Especially in regard to Colonel. He is their strongest and highest-ranking subordinate, under the direct jurisdiction of the Dark Queen and King. But! You have only just started out with this, so all of you have plenty of room for growth. Evelyn already showed remarkable progress, I'm sure the rest of you will be able to adapt quickly, too.
Ume: Then the conclusion of this conversation is as follows: We head out immediately and search for our comrade. Should Colonel appear, I suggest avoiding him as much as possible and directly running away should he turn up.
Evelyn: That sounds reasonable. Where should we start searching?
Ume: I think they said it was somewhere near the city center. Let's start there.
Evelyn: Alright! A lot of things are at stake. Ladies, here we go!

"Right!"

-------

The group of seniors, including Bee sitting inside Evelyn's bag again, arrive at the lively city center at last, instantly switching to search mode as they wander about.

Bee: It's such a hassle, seriously. Normally, I should be able to contact or detect an active member of The Hive Five, but for some reason I can't. I fear that only works once I got to meet them. What a pain. For real, I called it. I knew The Maverick was trouble, I just knew it! Damn.
Evelyn: Complaining does not get us anywhere. We have to make the best out of this situation.
Bee: Still... I just wish I could be more useful to all of you. It bugs me to just sit and wait while you have to do all the work.
Evelyn: You do not have to worry. Each time a food monster appears, you do a wonderful job evacuating the people nearby. It is all thanks to you they are safe during an incident.
Bee: ...Thanks.
Ume: Oh? So you were responsible for the deserted bake sale! I find that quite informative! Why didn't you tell me that earlier? What else can you do, Bee? Tell me e-ve-ry-thing!
Bee: Uhm... for example, I can create a brief pulse that wards off enemies for a short time. And-

*Beep* *Beep* *Beep* *Beep* *Beep*

A way too familiar alarm goes off again, alerting the group of an impending assault from the royals' minions.

Evelyn: ...There we go again. I hope we don't run into him.
Gertrud: We better not. Never thought I would actually prefer running into evil food than some guy.
Evelyn: True. Bee, can you lead us there again?
Bee: Sure thing! Finally I can show off for a bit! Go to the right!

Now hurriedly walking into the direction Bee told them, it seems to get more crowded the farther they go. In front of Amari Town's subway station, a huge mob of people has formed and everyone tries to force their way through the crowd.

Evelyn: Now this is a problem. How are we going to get to the other side?
Gertrud: Just watch me. I will carve us a way through!

Gertrud stomps ahead, then suddenly starts shouting at a bunch of people there.

Gertrud: These youngsters nowadays! Only ever blocking our way! You lot got no respect for us! And no clue what work really is! Back then, we had to work ourselves to the brink of exhaustion!...

As Gertrud keeps lamenting, the people start to make room for her. She secretly beckons at her companions behind her, signaling them to take the chance and work themselves through the opening she created.

Ume: That was splendid! And hilarious! Evelyn, I have to say, I already like your friend!
Evelyn: Gertrud truly has her own ways of achieving things. We should make haste and get through this crowd as long as we can!

The other two follow after Gertrud, squeezing themselves through the small path. At its end, an unbelievable sight unfolds in front of them. Cotton. Cotton everywhere. Loads and loads of cotton in their field of view. A group of men, all tied up into a fluffy chain of cotton, one bad guy trapped per hole. And in the center of attention, a young girl, no older than fifteen, stands on a piece of cotton like it were a cloud, airborne. Her long, white, almost silvery hair is styled into two pigtails hanging down on either side of her head and kept in place by white, fluffy scrunchies. The eyes shimmer in light blue, and she wears a pure white, voluminous dress, with a skirt that looks just like cotton, puffy short sleeves and a pair of white ballet flats. Then she takes a few steps forward, creating new 'clouds' to stand on as she does while the ones she leaves simply vanish. The girl comes to a stop again, posing cutely as she makes a victory sign with one hand while holding a cotton candy cone in the other.

"Fear not! The Cloud Fairy has arrived and bound these thieves!"

Looking more closely at the trapped men, they notice there really are several bags containing various kinds of jewelry. Completely dumbfounded, the team of warriors just stare at the scene with their mouths wide open. Bee sticks its head out, then shouts out in bewilderment.

Bee: Wrong genre, girl! Wrong genre!
Ume: Now looky here what we got. That's our Maverick, isn't it? She's all fuwa fuwa.
Bee: And it's a young girl?! How?! Evelyn, you said those with diabetes were usually old!
Evelyn: Yes, USUALLY. But not everyone.
Gertrud: Right. Just take a look at her arm.

They do, and realize a small, golden plastic disc is attached to her left arm, decorated with a white honeycomb cell symbol.

Gertrud: See that plastic thing on her? This is most probably a continuous glucose monitor.
Bee: But just what is she doing there?! You're supposed to fight evil creatures, not criminals!
Ume: Speaking of which... where exactly is our opponent? The alarm led us here, but I don't see anything unusual.
Bee: ...True that! Where are they?! Where?!

Everyone starts scanning their surroundings, suddenly paying attention at small, moving things under the supposed Maverick. All of their eyes narrow, watching these in suspicion.

Gertrud: ...Now you must be pulling my leg. Are those seriously walking onion rings?!
Bee: ...Looks like it. Daaaamn.

The little guys surround the girl completely dressed in white, shouting at her in a not very loud, but super high pitched helium voice.

"Time to die, puppet of the Queen Bee!" "Yeah! Just surrender! We might consider ending you less painful if you do!"

They caught the young girl's attention, who now hops to them on her cotton clouds. She glares at the walking onion rings with curiosity, then just snags one of them, making it flail.

"Hey!! What do you think you're doing?! Put me down, you! PUT ME DOWN, RIGHT NOW!!"

"Oh. Now that's talking big for a small fry snack."

After this, she simply pops it into her mouth, delightfully chewing on it as she holds her cheek, prompting Evelyn and the others to shout at her in utter shock and disbelief.

Team Evelyn: FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE, DON'T EAT THEM!!
