Chapter 37:
That month of yearning
The classroom door closed behind us, and the festival noise rushed in. The corridor was packed with people, and our voices dulled out in the noise of the excitement. We tried to push through the sea of people, not losing each other's sight.
"Stay close, Saya"
"Mhmm."
I take her hand and rush out from the crowded area. It was particularly easier to breathe now, as we approached near the drama club.
"Wow. Our class might be hitting it out of the park with this."
"It was certainly quite busy. Uhmm, Natsuki?"
I look at Saya's face, with her ears burning red but her eyes towards the floor. I follow her gaze to notice our hands interlocked. She was quite perplexed for an act so simple, but I guess she was still not comfortable letting others see us together. Maybe that's why.... Anyway, I try to let go of my hand, but Saya tightened her grip on mine.
"Actually, it's better this way. Let's go."
"Oh. Sure."
Gosh. What is happening to Saya today? Her bravery is throwing me for a loop, as I feel a little hot myself. Is she feeling the pressure of the passing trial period? Whatever it may be, I have to steel myself.
We continued to stroll across the school, and occasionally enjoying the various stalls that were spread across.
Her face as she enjoyed the blistering takoyaki and in the process burning her tongue was quite funny.
The art club demonstrated a wide array of paintings but they felt a bit amateurish from what I could see. But it certainly had it's own elegance. Don't quite know it, but Saya enjoyed my confused face as I tried to understand the inverted apple painting in front of me.
"Oh, I heard they are doing a planetarium in the astronomy club. Let's check it out!" The puppy eyes again. Not that I had any reason to say no.
"Sure, isn't it at the end of this floor?"
The room was quite dark as we entered the room. But it was accompanied by a deep, resounding voice.
"Thank you for joining us today. We will be starting our presentation shortly. Please lie down and gaze into the sky as you enjoy a pleasant view."
Easier said than done. But we lie down as instructed. Soon, there were small specks of light all across the room, recreating a starry night.
"Woah"
The last to supplement the stars was the moon. The intensity of the light was quite high, so I turned around to see Saya's eyes stuck to the ceiling. With her hair rustling around just within my hand's reach, I join her gaze as well and enjoyed the view.
You are quite late Mr. Moon. But, you did leave quite a mark didn't you?
