Chapter 19:
Dungeon Society Vol. 1
Zero stood his ground.
He raised his free hand and beckoned Braelion forward with a slight curl of his fingers, the deep maroon glow of his Magicyte armor casting a faint red light across the platform.
Braelion needed no further invitation.
The Sidhe’s assault continued unabated, each strike heavier and more frenzied than the last. Frost spread rapidly across the surrounding graves and stone floor, coating everything in a brittle layer of ice. The cold bit at the air, yet Zero did not falter.
Braelion came in with a vicious overhead strike, both hands gripping his ice-coated blade as he brought it down with everything he had.
Zero tightened his grip and took the full brunt of the blow on his sword.
BOOM.
The ground beneath them cracked and smashed apart under the pressure, stone splintering outward in a web of fractures. The impact sent a shockwave rolling across the platform, kicking up frozen dirt and shattered fragments of ancient memorials.
For a brief moment the two blades remained locked.
Then Zero twisted his sword with precise, overwhelming force.
The ice-coated weapon was repelled sideways with a sharp metallic screech, the redirected momentum forcing Braelion to stagger a step.
The Sidhe’s face twisted further in rage.
“You insolent—!”
Zero’s smile only sharpened as he reset his stance, cape shifting behind him in the cold air.
He was still waiting for Braelion to give him a real fight.
Braelion grit his teeth, ice still crawling along his blade as he glared at Zero.
“You ever wonder why you became a failed king? Why your little rebellion turned into such a pathetic joke?”
Zero’s eyes narrowed.
“Why does it matter?”
Braelion’s needle-like teeth spread into a wide, vicious grin.
“Oh, it matters. It always matters. When your precious queen and that sniveling little princess were slaughtered like the livestock they were… it broke you, didn’t it? We sat back and laughed. Human misery is always so entertaining. All that rage over something so small. A true king keeps a harem — dozens of them. Not some weak, devoted fool clinging to a single sow and her mewling brat.”
The words hit Zero like a physical blow.
A flash of memory tore through his mind with brutal clarity.
Queen Alira.
Princess Aeolia.
Their bodies — ruined beyond recognition. Not simply killed. Torn. Mutilated. Destroyed with a cruelty no ordinary human could have inflicted. The scene was merciless. Savage. Deliberate.
A single tear slipped from the corner of Zero’s eye before he could stop it.
The anger followed immediately after, rising fast and hot, flooding through his veins until his blood felt like it was boiling beneath his skin.
Braelion laughed harder, clearly savoring the reaction.
“Ah… there it is. You remember how they looked, don’t you? The way they screamed for their king to save them. Begging. Crying. Reaching out for a man who wasn’t even there. You were chasing false intelligence at some worthless crossroads while we carved them apart. It was delicious.”
His voice dripped with pure contempt.
“And in the end, the great Fatebreaker… the so-called king… failed the only two people who ever truly mattered to him.”
The deep maroon Magicyte circuits across Zero’s armor flared violently, brighter than before. The air around him grew heavy, oppressive, charged with something far darker than simple battle intent.
For the first time since entering Okunoin, Zero’s smile was completely gone. An aura exploded outward from Zero.
It was deep crimson and black — the same colors as the Magicyte circuits running through his armor — but far denser, far more violent. The air itself seemed to warp under the pressure. Cracks spiderwebbed across the already damaged platform as the raw force of it pressed outward in every direction.
His long silver hair began to darken from the roots, shifting into the same deep crimson-black shade as the aura surrounding him. When he lifted his head, his eyes were no longer gray.
They burned a pure, searing crimson.
Zero bared his teeth at Braelion, the expression closer to a snarl than a smile. The oppressive weight of his presence flooded the lower floor of Okunoin like a physical force.
Far above, on the upper levels, the Tyrants felt it immediately.
Raiden paused mid-swing, greatsword still buried in an undead’s torso. A cold, brutal pressure rolled through the dungeon from below — pure, condensed rage given form.
“…What the hell was that?” he muttered.
Yumi’s twin blades lowered slightly as she glanced downward. Kai’s floating Magicyte orbs flickered under the sudden interference. Even Sora’s calm expression tightened.
Something had changed in the depths.
Something that felt less like a Delver… and more like a natural disaster given human shape.
Back on the lower platform, Braelion’s earlier arrogance faltered for the first time. The ice along his blade crackled under the sheer pressure of Zero’s aura.
Zero took a single step forward.
The stone beneath his boot fractured.
His voice, when it came, was low and cold — stripped of everything except killing intent.
“Say their names again.” Zero’s Codex began to scream.
ALERT. ALERT. MAGICYTE WAVE EXPANDING. THOSE CAUGHT IN THE WAVE WILL PERISH. ALERT.
The same warning blared across the Tyrants’ devices on the upper floors.
Zero didn’t hesitate. He grabbed the Codex on his wrist and ripped it free. The device sparked violently as it was torn away, circuits shorting out before it clattered across the cracked stone and went dark.
Above, Raiden’s expression shifted from battle focus to sharp urgency as he checked the readings.
“Begin the retreat!” he barked. “We’re not staying for this.”
He activated his communicator.
“Zero! We’re exiting the dungeon. Handle whatever’s down there yourself. Come back when you can. Raiden out!”
The transmission cut.
On the upper floors, Skull Unit immediately shifted from slaughter to withdrawal. Raiden carved a path through the remaining undead while Yumi, Kai, and Sora covered the flanks, falling back in tight formation toward the entrance. The expanding Magicyte wave was already beginning to distort the air around them — a rising pressure that promised annihilation to anyone who remained too long.
They did not look back.
Deep below, Zero stood alone on the fractured platform, the torn Codex sparking uselessly at his feet. His crimson-black aura continued to surge, silver hair now fully stained the same dark color, eyes burning red.
Braelion stared at him, the first true flicker of unease visible behind his rage.
The Magicyte wave continued to expand outward from Zero’s body, warping the air and causing the ancient graves around them to tremble.
Whatever was about to happen… the Tyrants would not be present to witness it. Only Braelion and the enraged Fatebreaker remained.
“I asked you to say their names again, maggot.”
Zero stepped forward. The stone beneath his boot crunched and fractured under the weight of his presence, the crimson-black aura around him pulsing harder with every movement.
Braelion laughed — louder this time, almost giddy with cruelty.
“I forget their names. Human names are so… forgettable. Their screams, however?” He tilted his head, needle-like teeth gleaming. “Those I remember perfectly.”
Zero took another step. The ground split further.
“Say their names… maggot.”
This time it was not a request.
It was an order.
The kind of order that once moved armies. The kind that belonged to a king.
Braelion’s smile only widened as he clicked his tongue in open disdain.
“Tsk. I refuse. Those two simpering humans were simply too fun to kill. Honestly, I almost regret how quickly it ended. I would have preferred more time… to torture them properly. To savor every scream. Every tear.”
He dragged his tongue slowly across his needle-like teeth, eyes gleaming with vicious pleasure.
“And their flesh… was surprisingly tasty.”
The crimson-black aura around Zero detonated outward in a violent surge. The Magicyte wave intensified, warping the air and causing the surrounding graves to crack and splinter under pure pressure.
Zero’s burning red eyes locked onto Braelion with absolute, murderous focus.
The last thread of restraint had just been cut.
