Chapter 20:
Dungeon Society Vol. 1
Zero stepped forward—
—and was already in front of Braelion.
The overhead swing came down with catastrophic force. Braelion barely managed to raise his ice-coated blade in time, bracing with both arms as the impact drove him straight into the ground. Stone exploded beneath him. Cracks raced outward in every direction as the platform began to collapse under the sheer pressure.
“How is he so damn powerful!?”
The thought tore through Braelion’s mind in pure disbelief. Zero’s face was twisted into a feral snarl, teeth bared, his eyes nothing but pits of white-hot anger. The crimson-black aura around him roared like a living storm.
The ground cracked. Then it burst.
“I can’t hold him—!”
Before Braelion could finish the thought, a solid steel boot crashed into the side of his head.
The kick poleaxed him clean off his feet. His body was launched across the platform like a broken doll, slamming hard into a massive gravestone. The ancient monument shattered on impact, fragments of stone raining down around him.
Braelion hit the ground in a heap, spitting and coughing up blood. His vision swam. The ice on his blade flickered and cracked.
All around them, more undead began clawing their way up from the disturbed graves, drawn by the violent surge of power. Rotting hands pushed through the soil as the lower floor of Okunoin reacted to the battle.
Zero stood over the broken platform, cape shifting in the storm of his own aura, burning red eyes locked on the downed Sidhe. The dead swarmed toward Zero from every direction, drawn by the violent surge of power flooding the lower floor.
He swung his sword once.
A blast of force exploded outward, hurling the undead back in a wide arc. As his power continued to climb, arcs of red and black lightning tore free from his aura, slamming into the approaching corpses and reducing them to ash and broken, smoking remains.
Zero’s burning gaze never left Braelion.
He stepped forward.
Braelion forced himself onto his feet, blood dripping from his mouth, needle-like teeth bared in a mixture of pain and fury.
“I’m going to—!”
Zero’s steel-clad fist smashed into his face before the sentence could finish.
The impact snapped Braelion’s head sideways. He staggered back, more blood pouring from his nose and mouth.
“Argh—!”
Still standing, Braelion raised his ice-coated blade and rapidly carved a complex sigil along its length. Dark energy flared to life around the weapon.
“Come forth! Herald of Fate! Chorimere!”
An inky black portal ripped open behind him.
Two massive hands gripped the edges of the tear from the other side and forced it wider. The air itself seemed to scream as something enormous pushed through.
Then it emerged.
The creature from Zero’s memory stepped fully into the lower floors of Okunoin — a towering amalgam of monstrous design. Four heads rose from a single twisted body: two draconic, one demonic, and one angelic, all fused together by glowing runes and blackened flesh. Its presence warped the surrounding space, the Magicyte in the air reacting violently to its arrival.
The Chorimere — a Herald of Fate forged by the Architects themselves — had entered the battlefield.
Zero’s crimson-black aura flared higher in response, the deep maroon circuits across his armor blazing as he stared up at the abomination.
The Chorimere roared.
The sound was a layered nightmare — dragon, demon, and angel screaming as one. The force of it cracked the remaining intact gravestones and sent a shockwave rolling through the lower floor of Okunoin.
Braelion laughed through the blood in his mouth, still believing the summoned Herald would turn the tide in his favor.
He was wrong.
The Chorimere’s nearest head snapped sideways without warning. One of its massive limbs lashed out in a brutal sideswipe.
The blow caught Braelion cleanly.
Half of his body was ripped away in a single violent motion. What remained of the Ranked Sidhe was hurled across the platform and slammed into a towering gravestone with bone-shattering force. The monument cracked under the impact.
Braelion’s remaining eye widened in pure bewilderment as he hung there for a moment, blood pouring freely from the catastrophic wound. His needle-like teeth parted as if to speak — but no words came.
The light in his eyes faded.
Braelion, Herald of Fate, died with a look of complete disbelief still frozen on his face.
The Chorimere turned its four heads toward Zero, the glowing runes across its amalgamated body pulsing with hostile power. It paid no further attention to the corpse of the Sidhe who had summoned it.
Zero stood amid the wreckage of the platform, crimson-black aura roaring around him, red eyes locked on the towering abomination.
The only opponent left was the Herald of Fate itself. Zero pointed his sword at the Chorimere.
“Either you are the same creature who bested me…”
The Chorimere answered with a layered, overlapping laugh from all four heads at once. The sound was wrong — deep, high, guttural and melodic layered together into something deeply unsettling.
Zero’s eyes narrowed.
He recognized it.
This was the same monster from his memory. The same Herald of Fate that had nearly killed him in the past.
He dashed forward.
The two dragon heads reared back and unleashed twin torrents — one of roaring flame, the other of crackling lightning. Zero leapt high, aiming for what he judged to be a weak point near the junction of the necks.
The angelic head turned and sang.
A pure, resonant chorus of protection erupted from its mouth. A translucent barrier of divine force snapped into existence. Zero’s blade struck it hard and was violently repelled, the impact sending him bouncing back through the air. He landed heavily, boots carving grooves into the cracked stone.
The demonic head opened its maw.
Rows upon rows of jagged teeth began to spiral inward like a living grinder. Then it inhaled with terrifying force. The suction was immediate and absolute. Broken gravestones, scattered undead remains, and even the two mangled halves of Braelion’s corpse were dragged across the platform and swallowed whole.
Zero drove his sword deep into the ground, anchoring himself against the pull. The crimson-black aura around him flared as he held his position, cape snapping violently in the artificial wind.
When the suction finally eased, he ripped the blade free and resumed his assault without hesitation.
The dragon heads attacked again — one spitting a jet of hissing acid, the other a concentrated blast of freezing frost. Zero weaved between both, the corrosive spray and freezing wind missing him by narrow margins as he continued searching for a true weak point.
Most creatures he had faced possessed clear vulnerabilities.
The Chorimere was different.
It had been created to counter its own weaknesses, each head covering what the others lacked. Yet Zero refused to accept that it was invulnerable. There had to be something.
He darted around the massive body in a blur of dark armor and crimson light, eyes scanning every plate and seam.
Then he saw it.
Along the Chorimere’s broad back, beneath the shifting spines, the armored plates were layered thickly — overlapping like the shell of a turtle. Dense. Reinforced. But the way they shifted as the creature moved revealed thin gaps between the plates when it twisted or reared.
A possible opening.
Zero’s grip tightened on his sword as the deep maroon Magicyte circuits across his armor pulsed brighter.
He had found his target.
Zero avoided the next barrage of elemental blasts from the dragon heads and the violent suction of the demon head. In a burst of speed he dashed behind the Chorimere and leapt onto its broad, armored back, landing hard between the shifting spines.
He found the gap between the layered plates and drove his sword downward with everything he had.
The blade found purchase.
At the same moment the dragon heads twisted around and unleashed twin lightning blasts at point-blank range. The spines along the creature’s back reacted instantly, shooting upward like living spears. Several of them punched through Zero’s heavy Magicyte armor, piercing his shoulders, legs, feet, and hips with brutal force.
Zero did not stop.
He buried the sword deeper into the spine of the Chorimere, then twisted the blade with raw strength. There was a deep, wet crack as the spinal column severed.
The Chorimere reared and bucked violently, all four heads screaming in overlapping agony. The spines continued to drill into Zero’s body for a final, agonizing moment — then froze as the life left the amalgamated monster.
Blood poured from the fatal wound in thick, dark streams.
The Chorimere collapsed.
Zero lost his footing and fell from its back, hitting the cracked stone platform hard. The impact drove the remaining spines deeper before they finally went still.
“…Well. That… was painful.”
He barely managed to stand.
All around him, the lingering undead that had been drawn by the battle began to retreat, dragging themselves back into their disturbed graves as if the death of the Chorimere had broken whatever force compelled them.
Zero stumbled toward the rising platforms that led back to the upper levels. Each step left a trail of blood. His vision swam. The crimson-black aura around him flickered and began to fade, his hair slowly returning to silver as the rage-fueled state drained away with his strength.
By the time he reached the upper platform, his legs finally gave out.
He collapsed hard onto the stone.
Muffled voices reached him — distant, urgent, growing closer. The sound of boots. Someone calling his name.
His vision blurred completely.
Then everything went black.
