Whatever the intruder wanted to ride, the Amazons had no intention of being polite to him.
He had invaded Themyscira, provoked the queen, and refused to be taken quietly. Hippolyta did not even need to give another order. The Amazons around Damon were already attacking.
Amazons did not fear battle.
A killing rain of arrows poured toward him.
Damon bent back sharply, one hand bracing against the sand as his body flipped sideways. His other hand swept through the air and caught several arrows by the fletching. The moment he landed, he used the League of Assassins' throwing technique and sent them back.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Several Amazons charging in with spears and short swords dropped where they stood.
The first strike landed cleanly, and Damon surged forward like a tiger coming down a mountain. Fists, feet, elbows, knees. He moved with vicious speed.
The Amazons were brave, powerful warriors, but against a man who had copied so many styles, instincts, and years of combat experience, they were outmatched. He did not even need to stack his strength. None of them could last a full exchange.
In the blink of an eye, Amazon warriors were falling one after another.
Even Hippolyta, furious enough to draw her sword personally, was kicked to the ground.
Damon twisted both her arms behind her back and held them with one hand. Then he stepped over her, sat across her back, picked up her sword, and rested the blade against her neck.
"If you will not let me ride a horse, I suppose I will have to ride a person."
He smiled down at her.
"Do not blame me. Blame the people who left me here. I warned them they would regret it. So they are the ones who brought pain to Themyscira and to all of you."
"You will pay for this," Hippolyta said through clenched teeth, still struggling. "I promise you."
"Who is going to make me pay? You? The God Killer, Diana? Or that lecher Zeus? Surely not Ares. He is more likely to destroy Themyscira than save it."
"You..." Hippolyta's expression changed at once. "Who are you? How do you know that?"
The God Killer possessed the power to kill a god. It was Themyscira's greatest weapon against Ares, the god of war. Everyone believed the God Killer was a sword.
Only Hippolyta knew the truth.
The God Killer was not a blade.
It was her daughter, Diana.
Only a god could kill another god.
This man was overwhelmingly strong, knew the secret of the God Killer, and spoke of Zeus and Ares with familiarity but without reverence.
Who was he?
"Queen!"
"Mother!"
Two cries rang out from the distance.
Two riders came charging across the beach. One was Themyscira's general, Hippolyta's sister, Antiope. The moment she saw the fallen warriors and the queen pinned beneath Damon, she drew her bow before her horse had even reached them.
The other wore golden armor that left her shoulders bare, with a skirt that fell to her thighs. Her hair was braided, her features were delicate but heroic, and her face was twisted with fear and fury.
This was the God Killer Damon had just named.
Diana.
One of the future Trinity of the Justice League.
Wonder Woman.
"Now this should be fun."
Damon casually swung Hippolyta's sword and split Antiope's arrow in half. The arrowhead parted cleanly, and the shaft flew past on either side of him. A smile curled at the edge of his mouth. He drove his foot down hard and launched himself forward.
In midair, his body passed over Antiope's charging horse. His sword flashed, and she was knocked from the saddle.
He landed and turned toward Diana, whose horse was not quite as fast as Antiope's.
Damon closed his fist and punched.
Boom.
His fist struck the horse directly in the head.
The animal could not withstand that force. Its head burst apart, its forelegs buckled, and Diana was thrown from the saddle.
Her tall, lithe body skidded across the sand and came to a stop beside Hippolyta.
"Mother, are you hurt?" Diana helped her up anxiously. "Who is he? Did Ares send him?"
"I do not know."
Hippolyta shook her head and looked over just in time to see Antiope charging Damon while firing one arrow after another.
Compared with the League of Assassins, Amazon archery emphasized strength over trickery. Their shots were precise and powerful, but they were direct, honorable, and easy for Damon to read. Antiope's furious barrage came fast, yet Damon knocked every arrow aside with casual swings of the sword.
When she reached him, she brought the bow around like a club.
Slash.
Damon's sword moved after her swing but arrived first. It cut through the bow, and he followed with a kick.
Antiope's breastplate cracked.
She hit the ground hard.
"Antiope!"
Diana screamed when she saw the woman who had trained her since childhood fall. She broke into a sprint.
"Diana, no!"
Hippolyta tried to stop her, but Diana had already leaped high into the air, dropping toward Damon with all her force.
Boom.
The sand collapsed beneath the impact.
Diana raised her head toward Damon, who had stepped back out of range. The next thing in front of her was a fist wrapped in golden light.
Bang.
The world spun.
Diana flew backward and hit the ground. She fought to rise, but her body would not obey.
Pain hammered through her. Her head rang. She had never felt anything like this.
She had been struck so hard that she could not stand.
Golden light swirled around Damon, and divine power filled his body with a surge of exhilaration he could barely describe.
He had copied Diana's abilities.
As a demigoddess, Diana had been blessed by the Olympian gods at birth, strengthening every part of her body. She also carried divine power of her own. The old gods like Zeus might have faded from the stage while New Gods like Darkseid rose to replace them, and Diana might be only a demigoddess, but that divine power was still immense.
Unfortunately, this Diana had not yet faced what she truly was.
She could not bring out her full strength.
Blue lightning suddenly crackled around the golden divine energy. Two utterly different lights intertwined and thrashed around him, making Damon look like a god descending into the mortal world.
"Ares..."
Hippolyta stared at Damon and spoke the name without thinking.
