This was destined to be a sleepless night for Themyscira.
In the prison, the Amazons who had been reduced to slaves comforted one another and prayed that the gods of Olympus would save them.
In the corner, the queen and the general, once so noble and dignified, now wore manacles and shackles like everyone else.
After waking, Hippolyta and Antiope had been locked here and told what had happened while they were unconscious. Not long ago, Artemis had come and said many things about the Amazons' situation, about Diana, and about Damon.
For once, Hippolyta, usually so decisive, could not make a choice.
Anger?
Fear?
She even felt regret.
Had she known one white horse would bring Themyscira and Diana this kind of pain, she would not merely have given him the horse. She would have led it for him herself.
Night wind drifted through the island, rustling the leaves outside.
In Hippolyta's room, Damon lay beneath a blanket made from some unknown hide and pulled Artemis, who had just removed her armor, down beside him.
"At last, a pillow with decent proportions."
With a soft laugh, he drew her close.
Artemis was a seasoned warrior, her body trained through countless battles, but now she lay stiffly with her eyes shut. She did not move. Even her breathing was unconsciously held quiet.
Damon openly admired what her armor had concealed, then finally held her and fell asleep.
After a while, his steady breathing filled the dim room.
Artemis slowly opened her eyes and looked at him in surprise.
He had actually fallen asleep.
In the darkness, she stared at Damon's face, lost in thought. She did not know how long passed before she fell asleep too.
Her disciplined habits woke her early.
When she opened her eyes, Damon was holding her so closely there was barely any space between them. Artemis froze, then started to rise.
Bang.
The door was shoved open with force.
"Who is it?"
Artemis moved to get up on alert, but Diana had already strode to the side of the bed.
She wore bright red armor over her chest, a blue battle skirt, golden boots rising past her knees, bracers on both wrists, and a W-shaped tiara shining at her brow. In one hand she held a shield. In the other, a sword pointed straight at Damon.
Heroic, fierce, and full of confidence, she shouted, "Damon Keller, I challenge you!"
Her cry woke Damon.
He opened his eyes with one arm still around Artemis's shoulder.
"Oh?"
Seeing Diana in her Wonder Woman armor, he chuckled.
"Are you here to challenge me, or did you come to catch me in bed? So early in the morning too. Are you that eager to make babies with me?"
"I will defeat you," Diana said through clenched teeth.
"Because of the God Killer sword?"
Damon rose without concern and crooked a finger at Artemis. She was still stunned that he had recognized the sword, but after a moment she hurried over and helped him dress.
Diana grew even angrier watching it.
"Bring everyone out," Damon said casually. "I am sure they will all be interested in this challenge."
Artemis put her armor back on and hurried out.
"When we are done, you can wear that outfit while we make babies. I will not use the Lasso of Truth this time. It distracts me. I would rather focus all my attention on you."
Damon patted Diana on the shoulder and walked out.
Apart from the halo of her future identity as Wonder Woman, Diana herself was already exceptionally attractive. But because of the Lasso of Truth, most of Damon's attention yesterday had been dragged into that strange, academic exchange.
One by one, the Amazons were brought to the square.
When they learned that Diana was challenging Damon for their freedom, excitement spread through them. Hippolyta and Antiope were worried at first, but when they saw Diana holding the God Killer sword, they relaxed slightly.
The sword could not truly kill a god, but its quality and power were exceptional. With it, perhaps Diana could defeat Damon.
Under their expectant gazes, Damon strolled to the center of the square.
He looked around at the hopeful Amazons, then at Diana, who stood ready and confident.
"Come on."
"Ha!"
Diana did not hesitate. With a shout, she drove forward behind her shield.
The fight began.
Every Amazon tensed, staring without blinking.
Diana had received training since childhood that was stricter and harsher than anyone else's. Now her divine power had awakened, and she held the God Killer sword. She should be able to succeed.
Surely.
Bang.
Damon raised one hand and stopped the shield rushing at him.
The shield flashed, and Diana's boot, gold and dark red, drove toward his abdomen. Damon slapped down with one hand, and a heavy force made her leg drop against her will. The God Killer sword followed immediately.
Before the blade arrived, the hand that had knocked her leg aside curled into a fist and punched.
Diana grunted. The sword pierced the ground as her body slid backward, leaving a long gouge in the stone.
"You cannot beat me with only that," Damon said lightly. "Use your full strength."
He smiled.
"Not that full strength will let you beat me either."
"Hah!"
Diana shouted again.
Divine power roared from her. The God Killer sword lit with a sharp, dazzling glow.
The Amazons retreated in shock as that divine force struck them like a storm, making it almost impossible to open their eyes.
At the center of the storm, Diana raised the God Killer sword and poured every ounce of divine power she had into a thrust at Damon.
Light blazed.
Thunder cracked.
Hippolyta stared at the blade, her mouth slightly open.
Please succeed.
Please.
That sword, carrying Diana's divine power and the prayers of every Amazon, reached Damon.
Infinite Stacking, tenfold.
Damon gave a low shout and raised his hand.
He stopped the God Killer sword.
Stopped it?
He had blocked the God Killer sword with his bare hand.
Every Amazon froze.
Surprise flashed across Diana's face, then her gaze hardened. With a hoarse roar, she gripped the sword with both hands and pushed forward with all her strength.
Even if he was a god, the God Killer could kill gods.
With that conviction, Diana pressed on.
Then she heard something crack.
Crack. Crack.
Damon did not move at all.
The sword was shrinking.
The God Killer sword was breaking.
Diana stared in shock as Damon smiled and crushed the legendary blade inch by inch. Then he caught her wrist, shook the hilt from her hand, bent down, and hoisted her over his shoulder.
"Come on. Let's go make babies."
