Chapter 4:
Naruto: Shadow Clone System
Mission update is live.
Get comfortable. The village is watching.
✦
The Kage Bunshin no Jutsu was a terrible idea wearing the shape of a solution.
Naruto knew that before he reached the end of the first column.
The Academy clone had been a painted ghost: shape, chakra, distraction, and then nothing the moment the world touched it too hard.
This was not that.
A shadow clone made a body.
Not a puppet. Not a projection. A body with breath, weight, reaction, memory, and enough of him inside it to make the word tool feel suddenly stupid.
Memory was the part that made his fingers tighten on the scroll.
The old joke about abusing the technique for training tried to surface anyway. Make clones. Read faster. Practice longer. Cheat the grind. Turn a month into an evening.
Sitting in cold grass with stolen state secrets under his hands and a demon sealed beneath his ribs, it stopped sounding clever.
It sounded like giving himself brain damage and calling it ambition.
He read the section twice.
Then a third time, slower, because the first two reads had been half hunger and half fear.
Distribute chakra evenly.
Shape stable physical vessels.
Anchor identity.
Release without fragmentation.
The original Naruto had forced the impossible through raw reserves and desperation. That path still existed. He could throw himself at the technique, flood the clearing with orange, crush Mizuki under a legend's opening scene, and hope canon remembered how to catch him.
Tempting.
Stupid.
His palm throbbed where the window frame had scraped it. His lungs still burned from the chase. A smear of orange paint had dried stiff on his cuff. The body wanted a win so badly it almost felt like pain.
That was exactly why he distrusted it.
If a clone died badly, did the pain return clean or jagged? If three saw different angles at once, did the mind sort them or choke on them? If the seal helped, what did it ask for in return?
Maybe Uzumaki vitality made the technique survivable.
Maybe Naruto had always been built wrong in exactly the useful way.
Maybe was not a medical plan.
The cross seal came together under his hands.
Oddly natural.
Not easy. Natural. Like a joint moving in a direction it had been denied for years.
"Kage Bunshin no Jutsu."
Chakra surged.
He did not pinch it down the way the Academy clone had demanded. He opened three channels, wide and uneven, and shoved the flood outward before fear could make him overcorrect.
Smoke burst across the clearing.
Three copies appeared.
One landed on both feet and immediately looked at the scroll instead of him.
One hit the grass on a knee, hand braced, eyes already searching the tree line.
The third bent double and vomited beside a root.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then the watcher clone rasped, "Left side is louder."
The reader clone said, "Ink order matters. We skipped a stabilizing note."
The sick clone wiped his mouth with the back of a shaking hand. "I hate both of you."
Naruto stared at them.
They stared back with his eyes, his fear, his irritation, and three different pieces of attention he had not meant to hand away.
"Nobody dispels without warning," he said.
"I can feel the headache waiting," the reader said.
"I can feel everything," the sick one muttered. "That seems worse."
So they knew.
Good.
Horrifying.
"Positions," Naruto said, because if he stopped organizing them he would have to think too hard about what they were. "Reader keeps the scroll. Watcher tracks the trees. Seal-check sits down and tells me when the fox stirs."
"With what medical training?" the sick clone asked.
"Shared terror and low standards."
"Great. Professional."
The watcher clone lifted two fingers without turning. "Something moved. Far. Could be wind."
Naruto's almost-laugh died in his throat.
Not Mizuki. Too soon.
Maybe wind. Maybe ANBU. Maybe the village deciding how much treason it wanted to tolerate before bedtime.
He set them to work.
The next ten minutes did not feel like training. Training had rhythm. This was a room full of arguments happening inside the same skull.
The reader muttered corrections from the scroll and found where his first attempt had warped the identity anchor. The watcher reported every branch noise until Naruto wanted to throw something at him. The seal-check clone sat cross-legged with both palms over his stomach and described heat in increasingly ugly detail.
"Warm."
"Warmer."
"It doesn't like being divided."
"Define it."
"The giant hatred furnace under our ribs. That it."
Naruto adjusted the flow.
Three clones were manageable. Barely. Chakra drain was not the first problem. The reserves were monstrous enough that waste felt affordable, which was its own kind of trap. Attention was worse. Each clone tugged at him, a conversation in another room with the door cracked open.
He dispelled the watcher first.
"Ready," the clone said, and vanished.
Memory hit like a thrown brick.
Cold bark under one palm. Moonlight through leaves. A twig snapping west of the clearing. Annoyance at being made to stare into darkness. Fear hiding under the annoyance. His own breathing from outside his body.
All of it slammed into place because it had been his.
Naruto dropped to one knee and swallowed bile.
"Useful," he forced out.
The other clones went quiet.
"That was one," the reader said.
"I noticed."
"Canon left out the concussion part."
The joke should have helped.
It did not.
He took a full minute before trying again.
During that minute, the body wanted motion. Noise. A win big enough to drown the trembling in his fingers. The mind wanted a sealed room, measured increments, and several experts who were not planning to weaponize him.
The clearing gave him crickets, stolen ink, and enough moonlight to see his hand shake when he reached for the scroll.
So he made rules because rules were lighter than panic.
No more than five before Mizuki arrived.
Never release all clones at once unless dying was the alternative.
No emotional surges while shaping chakra.
Do not let the red chakra choose.
The rules looked sturdy in his head. His pulse did not respect architecture.
"We should name that face," the reader said.
"What face?"
"The one where we pretend discipline is a personality."
"Read."
"Reading."
Hearing his own sarcasm outside his mouth should have been disturbing.
It was.
It was also better than being alone.
The next attempt made five.
Too many.
He knew before the smoke cleared. Five bodies meant five breathing rhythms, five sets of tiny reactions, five senses pulling at a mind already running hot. The seal stirred harder. A red edge bled into the chakra, not enough to break shape, enough to make every clone bare his teeth at once.
"Release three."
Three vanished.
The memories drove a spike behind his eyes.
He tasted blood.
The clearing tilted.
One remaining clone caught his shoulder. "Nose."
His fingers came away red from his upper lip.
Not fatal.
Enough.
"Controlled limit is three," Naruto said.
"Controlled limit is one if we like having a brain."
"Mizuki won't lose to one."
"Mizuki can wait behind the headache."
Naruto looked into his own annoyed face and understood, briefly and completely, why every Academy teacher had wanted to strangle him.
Then the world pulsed.
The open scroll shivered without wind. The seal tightened. Heat crawled up his ribs, into his throat, behind his eyes. Both remaining clones froze with him.
Darkness opened behind thought.
Water underfoot.
Iron bars.
A corridor too large to fit inside a person.
Then pale words burned across his sight.
[Uzumaki Ascension Ledger]
Host: Naruto Uzumaki
Critical Technique: Shadow Clone
Mandate: Break the Tutorial
Objective: Master Shadow Clone without mental collapse.
Reward: Clone Feedback Filter I
Risk: Seal Instability Rising
Naruto jerked back and knocked the scroll stand over.
The words stayed for one breath longer than they should have.
Too clean. Too easy to obey.
The nearest clone whispered, "That is new."
Naruto could not answer. His tongue felt glued to the roof of his mouth.
The panel did not feel pasted onto the world. It felt translated: seal pressure, stolen technique, fractured memory, and whatever impossible thing had dragged him here finding the least insane language his mind could accept.
A system.
Of course.
Somewhere, something had a terrible sense of humor.
"No free gifts," he said.
The clone blinked. "What?"
"No shop. No beginner sword. No points until proven otherwise. It's tied to the seal."
"We hope."
"We assume until evidence says otherwise."
"That is how people die."
"So is standing still."
The clone opened his mouth, considered that, and closed it.
The Kage Bunshin section looked sharper now. Not simpler. Organized. His failures lined themselves into categories: flow, vessel, identity, return.
The Ledger had not made him strong.
It had labeled the cliff.
A labeled cliff was still a cliff.
He tested the thought by doing nothing for ten seconds.
No prompt appeared. No reward for breathing. No cheerful command to complete three push-ups for a prize. The panel faded and left cold grass, stolen ink, and the pulse under his stomach.
That was almost reassuring.
A generous system would have been suspicious. A cruel one fit the village better.
He created two clones.
Cleaner.
Still wasteful. Still rough. But both landed on their feet, and the pull behind his eyes no longer felt like hooks under the skull.
"We train until Mizuki arrives," Naruto said.
One clone looked toward the trees. "And if Iruka arrives first?"
His jaw tightened.
"Then we make sure he lives."
They worked.
Not for hours. It only felt that way because clone memory folded time into ugly strips. Two clones became reliable. Three became possible with pain. He learned that clones copied fatigue unevenly, that attention frayed before chakra did, and that anger made the energy hotter, redder, more eager to answer.
One clone read ahead and went very still.
"Sealing notes," it said, voice thin. "Or murder poetry. Hard to tell."
"Later."
"Everything dangerous says later right before it becomes now."
"Read the same line again."
The clone scowled, but obeyed.
Another tried a slow taijutsu form from Academy memory. The first stance held. The second wobbled. The third made Naruto's left knee complain in two bodies at once.
Useful.
Embarrassing.
The body had endurance and bad habits in equal measure. Years of running, brawling, and surviving had built something stubborn. It had not built discipline.
He learned the Kyubi was listening.
The fox did not speak.
It did not need to.
Once, after a clone stumbled and rage flashed bright at his own weakness, the grass bent outward from his feet. Every copy went still. Somewhere in the trees, a bird tore itself into the air.
Naruto forced his hand open and breathed until the red edge thinned.
"Not yours," he muttered.
The closest clone answered too softly, "Not yet."
Naruto glared.
"Bad joke?"
"Bad truth."
The words stayed with him.
By the time footsteps moved through the trees, he had seven workable variations, a skull full of hot needles, and a plan already chewed by reality.
The last clone dispelled slowly.
Memory returned.
Less pain.
Not no pain.
Less.
The Ledger flickered without fully opening. Meaning arrived as pressure behind the eyes: filter partial, safe range two or three, emotional volatility dangerous, red chakra not to be trusted.
Naruto wiped blood from under his nose and rolled the scroll just enough to hide the open section.
"Naruto!"
Iruka.
Relief hit so hard it almost bent his knees.
Then another presence moved higher in the trees.
Lighter steps.
Early.
Mizuki.
Naruto stood, sore everywhere, and grabbed the scroll strap.
For one breath, the world inside him opened again: black water, iron bars, and a single red eye watching from the dark.
A low laugh rolled through the seal.
Unauthorized Chakra Detected.
