Chapter 5:
Naruto: Shadow Clone System
Mission update is live.
Get comfortable. The village is watching.
✦
Iruka came through the trees with a kunai in his hand and fear on his face.
Not anger.
The difference hit harder than Naruto expected.
Iruka was breathing too fast. Dirt streaked one sleeve. Two fingers were stained orange, the same bright paint Naruto had left behind the Academy storage building because he had needed the trail to be visible and deniable at the same time.
His eyes found the scroll first.
Then Naruto.
Then the blood drying under one whisker mark.
Fear hardened into fury.
"What did you do?"
The answer had to sound stupid enough to survive a report and ashamed enough to be true.
"I studied?"
"Do you understand what that is?"
"Heavy," Naruto said, and heard the old mask try to crawl over his face.
"Naruto."
The single word stripped the joke down to bone.
Naruto shifted, putting the scroll behind his left leg.
Iruka noticed immediately. Too sharp to fool. Too worried to back away.
"Who told you about it?"
Metal cut the dark before Naruto could answer.
Iruka moved first.
There was no lecture in it. No weighing odds. Just a teacher putting himself between a weapon and the student who had stolen a state secret under his watch.
The giant shuriken slammed into his back.
Iruka grunted once and dropped to one knee.
Everything inside Naruto stopped badly.
The plan.
The clearing.
The smug little part of him that had believed knowing the scene made him ready for it.
Blood spread through Iruka's vest.
Naruto had known the shape of this moment. He had built around it, told himself the man survived in another version, and treated that survival like a number on a page. Reality put Iruka on one knee in front of him and made the number breathe.
Heat roared behind his navel.
For one second, thought burned red.
Mizuki landed on a branch above them, pale hair silver under the moon, second shuriken strapped across his back. Without the smile, his face looked smaller. Meaner. Almost ordinary.
"Iruka," he said, "you always did get sentimental at the worst time."
Iruka tried to stand.
Failed.
"Run," he rasped.
Something in Naruto's chest cracked around the word.
He had heard adults shout his name. He had heard them accuse, dismiss, threaten, ignore. He had not heard many tell him to live while their own blood was paying for the sentence.
His fingers trembled.
The red chakra pressed closer, eager as a hand reaching from the dark.
Use me.
Naruto bit the inside of his cheek until blood filled his mouth.
Pain made a narrow path through the heat. It was not calm. It was barely choice.
Barely still counted.
"Mizuki-sensei," he said, looking up. "You're early."
Mizuki's eyes narrowed.
Iruka went very still.
Too much.
Naruto knew it the moment the words left him.
Mizuki laughed once. "So you did know something."
"I knew your directions were bad."
"Give me the scroll."
"No."
Small word. Flat. Harder than his voice felt.
Mizuki's gaze flicked to Iruka. "You do not even understand what you are protecting. He never told you the truth, did he?"
Iruka's panic moved through the clearing before he could hide it.
Here it came.
The secret. The wound. The reason behind every closed door and every adult gaze that slid cold over a hungry child.
"Twelve years ago," Mizuki called, letting his voice carry, "the Nine-Tails attacked this village. The Fourth Hokage defeated it, but he did not kill it."
"Mizuki, stop."
Iruka did not sound like a teacher then.
He sounded afraid.
Mizuki smiled.
"He sealed it inside a child."
The forest seemed to hold its breath.
Naruto already knew.
He had woken up knowing. Felt the fox shift under his skin. Seen black water and bars. Planned around a catastrophe living under his ribs.
It still landed.
Because the memories under Naruto's skin had not known. They had collected pieces instead. Mothers pulling children away. Shopkeepers raising prices. Civilians whispering monster like the word was not aimed at a person. Birthdays alone. Hunger becoming routine because asking too often hurt worse than going without.
Mizuki spread his arms.
"You are the Nine-Tails. That is why they hate you. That is why Iruka hated you too. Everyone has been lying to you."
Iruka forced himself upright with the shuriken still buried in his back.
"No. Listen to me. You are not-"
"Quiet," Mizuki snapped.
The kunai came for Iruka's throat.
Naruto moved badly, too fast for balance, and shoved the injured man sideways. The blade sliced his shoulder instead.
White pain.
Hot blood.
Red chakra answered like a door cracking open.
[Uzumaki Ascension Ledger]
Filter Status: Partial
Warning: Emotional Volatility Critical
Unauthorized Chakra Proximity: Rising
The words flashed and vanished.
No reward.
No command.
Only the cliff with a label on it.
Mizuki hesitated. "You think this is funny?"
"No." Naruto lifted his head. His mouth tasted like blood and old loneliness. "I think you're scared of what happens if I don't break."
The cross seal formed.
Smoke swallowed the clearing.
Two clones landed between Mizuki and the scroll.
Only two.
The old story wanted a crowd. Every impulse wanted a flood. The fox under his ribs wanted the world to answer in red.
Naruto did not give it that.
Two was the safe edge.
Three hurt.
Five had nearly folded him open.
Mizuki's face changed anyway, because a failed Academy student had just made solid people where the village expected smoke and embarrassment.
"Kage Bunshin," Iruka breathed.
The first clone threw a kunai too early.
Mizuki knocked it aside, dropped from the branch, and cut through the clone's throat before its feet settled.
Memory snapped back.
Steel.
Air.
The shock of dying without a wound left behind.
Naruto staggered and nearly vomited.
The filter caught the worst of it. Not enough. Never enough.
Mizuki saw the stumble.
"So there is a limit."
Naruto forced his hands up again.
"You first."
Two more clones burst into the clearing, one high, one low. Mizuki moved like a chunin, which meant fast enough to make the Academy look like a nursery game. He broke the low clone's arm, kicked the high one apart, and came through the smoke smiling.
Pain returned in pieces.
Wrist.
Ribs.
Branch bark against a cheek that was not there anymore.
Naruto's knees bent.
Iruka reached for him and stopped because the movement dragged the shuriken in his back.
"Naruto, don't," Iruka said.
Wrong thing to say.
"You told me to run," Naruto said. "Pick one."
Iruka's face twisted.
Mizuki came in again.
Naruto made three clones this time.
The world split at the edges.
One clone went for Mizuki's eyes with dirt. One grabbed for the second shuriken strap. One put himself between Mizuki and Iruka with both hands shaking.
Mizuki killed the brave one first.
Of course he did.
Memory hit Naruto like a fist under the sternum.
He swallowed a sound that would have told Mizuki too much.
The dirt clone bought half a second. The strap clone bought less, but less was still a grip, a pulled shoulder, a blade angle ruined.
Iruka moved in that ruined angle.
Bleeding, shaking, furious.
His kunai cut Mizuki's sleeve and forced him back.
"He is not a monster," Iruka said.
The clearing went still in pieces.
Mizuki's sneer returned too fast. "Still pretending? Your parents died because of what is inside him. How long will you lie?"
Iruka's face went white.
This was the moment from the old story. The hand reaching into the deepest part of a lonely boy and telling him he was a person.
Naruto could interrupt. Pressure Mizuki. Hide from hearing it because hearing it would hurt the body in places memory had not touched.
He did not.
Iruka gripped the shuriken lodged in his back and breathed through pain hard enough to shake.
"I hated the fox," he said.
Naruto's last clone froze.
"I hated that night. I hated what it took. I hated being alone after it." Iruka's voice cracked, then held. "And I was wrong when I let any of that touch a child."
Naruto's throat closed.
Iruka looked at him.
At him.
Not through the seal.
"You were loud," Iruka said. "You were impossible to teach some days. You made trouble because trouble got you seen. But you were never the fox."
Mizuki's hand tightened around his kunai.
Iruka took one breath, shallow and ugly.
"You are Naruto Uzumaki. My student. If you think I will let you use him, you learned nothing from my classroom."
The forest blurred.
Naruto blinked hard.
Adult mind. Borrowed heart. Old rage. New guilt. The wish to be chosen and the shame of needing it.
All of it narrowed to one order.
Protect him.
Naruto made two clones.
Then another two after the first pair died.
Then one, because the third attempt shook so badly he could not trust the shape.
The fight became ugly.
Not a duel.
A debt paid in seconds.
Mizuki was better than every copy. He proved it over and over. He broke noses that came back as memory. He cut throats that became smoke. He smashed a clone's knee sideways and Naruto felt the useless leg vanish a breath later. He laughed once when Naruto flinched after a dispel.
Then he stopped laughing.
Because the clones were not trying to win.
They were counting him.
Left shoulder slow after wide swings.
Right ankle soft on landing.
Killing hand checks when a clone flashes Iruka's vest.
Anger makes him throw too hard.
The original stayed near Iruka and made replacements in small, punishing bursts. Two at a time when he could. Three when Mizuki got too close. Never more. The red heat pressed every time he wanted a crowd, and every time he refused it, his whole body shook.
Iruka saw that too.
"Breathe," he ordered.
Naruto almost laughed and did not have the spare air.
Naruto tried to answer.
No air came.
"Breathe anyway."
So he did.
Not well. Enough.
Mizuki drove through the next pair and reached the scroll.
Naruto's hands would not come together fast enough.
Iruka threw his kunai.
It missed Mizuki.
It cut the scroll strap.
The scroll dropped instead of sliding into Mizuki's hand.
For one heartbeat, everyone looked at it.
Naruto used the heartbeat.
Three clones.
Pain split behind his eyes.
The first clone tackled Mizuki's knees. The second wrapped both arms around the traitor's knife hand and held while the blade went into his own shoulder. The third got Mizuki's pouch.
Wire spilled into the grass.
Iruka understood before Naruto did.
"His arms," Iruka said.
The next burst cost blood from Naruto's nose.
Two clones dragged the wire. One tied badly. One died holding the knot in place. Mizuki slammed his elbow back into the original's jaw and knocked light sideways across the clearing.
Naruto tasted dirt.
The red chakra surged.
Take it.
Mizuki's shadow fell over him.
"You should have stayed a hated child," Mizuki said.
Naruto looked past him.
Iruka was crawling.
Not standing. Not heroic in any clean way. Crawling through leaves with one hand clamped around the shuriken lodged in his back and the other reaching for the loose wire.
Mizuki followed Naruto's eyes too late.
Iruka pulled.
The wire snapped tight around Mizuki's ankles.
Naruto made one clone.
Only one.
The clone hit Mizuki low. The original hit him high. Neither punch had form. Both had all the fear Naruto had not spent screaming.
Mizuki went down.
Iruka's last kunai pinned wire to dirt.
The clearing went quiet except for breathing.
Naruto waited for Mizuki to move.
He did not.
Bound in his own wire, bleeding from the mouth, eyes open and furious, Mizuki stared at the sky.
Naruto stayed on his feet for three seconds.
Then sat down hard.
The world tilted.
Iruka lurched toward him.
"Don't move," Naruto snapped, then saw the shuriken again and winced. "Sorry. Just... don't make the hole worse."
Iruka stared.
Then he laughed once.
It hurt him. He did it anyway.
"You really did learn it."
Naruto looked at Mizuki, the stolen scroll, the blood on Iruka's vest, the fading edge of hostile text in the back of his sight.
"Barely."
"Barely counts tonight."
The words should have comforted him.
They did.
They also made every cut feel earned in the worst possible way.
Branches shifted.
ANBU landed in the clearing like shadows deciding to become law.
One secured Mizuki. Another moved to Iruka with medical supplies. A third approached the scroll and stopped just far enough away to make the distance obvious.
Nobody drew a weapon on Naruto.
Every mask watched him anyway.
Too late to pretend the night had been normal.
Iruka reached up with shaking hands and removed his own forehead protector.
"Come here," he said.
"You're injured."
"Naruto."
The name stopped him.
He crawled closer because standing belonged to people with better choices and fewer clones in their skull.
Moonlight caught on the metal plate. For a second, neither of them spoke.
"You pass," Iruka said.
The cloth settled into Naruto's hands.
Joy hit the body like sunlight through a locked door.
He had planned for this.
Used it.
Needed it.
It still mattered.
"Thank you," Naruto said, voice raw enough to hate.
"You earned it," Iruka said.
An ANBU medic said, "Instructor Umino, now."
Iruka let them take his weight only after Naruto tied the headband around his forehead.
The cloth felt too clean against sweat and blood.
The Ledger flickered at the edge of sight and failed to open.
Filter partial.
Pain active.
Red chakra contained.
No congratulations.
No prize.
Only the ache of still being alive.
Hours later, Hiruzen Sarutobi sat in his office with the first ANBU report under one hand and an unlit pipe between his fingers.
Iruka alive. Mizuki captured. Forbidden Scroll recovered. Field graduation recommended after successful use of Kage Bunshin.
He turned the page.
Orange spiral discovered behind Academy storage. Concealed directional marks appear to have guided Instructor Umino toward northern training ground before theft was reported.
The old man's eyes sharpened.
A second note waited beneath the first, thinner paper, no official seal on the front.
ROOT channel requested a copy of all observations involving Uzumaki Naruto's clone output, red chakra fluctuation, and anomalous tactical behavior.
One request.
Enough.
Hiruzen set the note aside without signing it.
Outside the window, Konoha slept badly.
"Naruto," Hiruzen murmured, "why leave a trail before committing the crime?"
