Chapter 934:

Mina Kowalski

En Passant Grandmaster

"You recognized the voice of someone who's believed to be involved in a disappearance case that occurred over 10 years ago?" Okisato frowned.

"Apparently they had footage of two men believed to be involved in the incident playing chess with each other. They didn't play great chess, mind you, though it was blitz format so intentional blunders can be part of the strategy, but still... That said, the one whose voice I recognized clearly had a grasp on every move he was making, even the bad ones."

"Who is this guy?"

"He proclaimed himself to be, Vasily Isamov and While he said his friend's name was Ivo Bogush."

"Not ringing any bells."

"I couldn't even find the two on a WWCF search. Nor any of the missing athletes, though, I guess most of them have now been confirmed dead anyway."

"Like who?"

"Mmm, I don't think they said. There were a bunch apparently."

"Do you have a video of what you saw on the chess channel? I might be able to help you figure out who the voice belongs to."

Mimoko nodded, but as soon as she found the video and begun playing it, there was a problem. "Huh? Why's there no sound?"

"Hmm, is your volume turned down?"

"No, and there's no sign it's muted on the site. Hold on..."

After confirming the sound was working fine after clicking on a different video, Mimoko cycled back, yet the sound was still muted.

"I think I found the problem. There's a notice that due to all the copyrighted music playing in the background, the video volume had to be muted," Okisato stated.

"What? But it was fine on the TV!" Mimoko cried.

"Well, to be fair, this is the closing ceremony of the Olympic games. The chess channel probably went through a bunch of hurdles just to air that short segment on TV unmuted. That said, I can at least see the men in question. Vasily's the redhead, right?"

"Yes."

Okisato stared intently at the man, yet no lightbulbs turned on.

"Sorry, I'm not recognizing this guy on looks alone."

"That's fine. It was just a whim, really, nothing more," Mimoko smiled as the bell rang. "I'll see you at club- Ah, wait, we're heading to France after. Sorry, please man the club for me."

"Will do, Inoue-senpai."

As Mimoko trotted away, Okisato pulled up the video on his own phone and began watching it. "Grandiose to say the least given the hand movements and facial expressions. Ah, he really did play something nasty. Not exactly the best though since you can't really get away with making two questionable moves in a row unless it's part of a named opening. Guess Ivo's not too skilled a player," he thought.

However, as he reached the end of the video, his eyes began to bulge.

"That woman... I saw her face before. When was it... ...! Mina Kowalski! When I looked up her name, it said she went missing following the conclusion of the 2014 Winter Olympics before they found her months later dead in an ice pond. I thought Skaberghast was messing with me, but now... I have a lead on one he claims to have been an added entourage to the sinful six."
