Chapter 13:

The unseen flashback

HIKARU TO ONNA

Yuki and Yukito were twins, born on a night when the snow fell so thick it blanketed the world in pure white. It was that very snowfall that inspired their names, tying their identities to the winter chill. But while their names carried the same soft imagery, their realities couldn't have been more different.Back in the lab, Yuki stood up abruptly, his chair scraping harshly against the floor. "No, Sensei," he said, his voice trembling with a mix of anger and betrayal. "I know you're lying to me. I couldn't even change the color of the chemicals. You're just making things up to make me feel better, aren't you?"Sensei sighed softly, trying to calm the boy down. "I'm not lying to you, Yuki. I went to your house—you know that, right?""Yeah, I know," Yuki muttered, his fists clenching at his sides. "But saying my power is just 'negativity' because of Yukito's power? That has to be a lie."He desperately wanted to reject the truth, but Sensei kept talking, patiently trying to get through to him. Overwhelmed and unable to process the weight of the words anymore, Yuki didn't wait to hear another sentence. He turned around and bolted out the door.Sensei watched him go, a heavy sigh escaping his lips as he muttered to himself, "I only told him that much, and he's already falling apart. If I had told him the rest... if he knew that he only gets his true power upon Yukito's death..." Sensei shook his head. Yuki had no idea about the grim condition tied to his awakening; his family had deliberately kept him in the dark. And right now, the mere realization that his own family had hidden his true nature from him felt like a sharp blade to his chest.Blinded by tears and betrayal, Yuki ran aimlessly. He ran so fast and with such raw emotion that he accidentally crossed a threshold, slipping right out of the normal flow of time and into a fractured space. Sensei shouted after him, trying to stop him, but Yuki blocked out the voice, running straight ahead until his surroundings blurred. When his feet finally slowed down, he realized the air had grown thick and suffocating. He was standing right in the middle of the Space of Demons.Looking around, a sudden realization hit him. Why did I end up here of all places? he thought bitterly. Right. The pull of my negative power. It dragged me straight to the dark.A cluster of withered, blackened trees stood nearby, their branches weeping with decay. Wanting to prove to himself that he wasn't just a curse, Yuki focused his energy, attempting to use his power to heal the dry leaves and bring them back to life. But the moment his energy touched the branches, the opposite happened. The leaves didn't turn green; they rotted right before his eyes and turned into a foul sludge, splashing onto the ground. The trees looked worse than they did before he touched them.Yuki lowered his hands, completely disheartened, his spirit sinking into a deep slump.Unbeknownst to him, someone was watching from the shadows. A woman from his village had just finished a tense meeting with an Akuma regarding the ancient seals. On her way back, she caught sight of Yuki in the clearing and stopped dead in her tracks, witnessing the exact moment his power corrupted the trees.Curious and deeply unsettled, she stepped out from hiding and walked over to him.Yuki looked up, his eyes widening in surprise. "Oh... Auntie? What are you doing here?"The woman crossed her arms, her eyes narrowing. "What are you doing in a place like this?"Exhausted, overwhelmed, and completely drained of energy, Yuki collapsed, dropping flat onto the ground. "I don't even know," he groaned into the dirt. "Somehow, I just ended up here."The woman blinked, caught off guard by his bluntness. "What? What kind of an answer is that?"Yuki rolled his eyes, turning his head away. "Why do you care anyway?""Because I just saw you use your power," she said, her voice dropping to a serious whisper.Yuki winced, his face twisting into a grimace of pure disgust. "Yeah, well... it was awful."As Yuki brooded, the woman stood frozen, her mind racing as fear and confusion gripped her chest. This makes no sense, she thought frantically, staring at the boy on the ground. No one in our village is supposed to have a destructive, negative power like that. Nobody... except my own son.

Onna asked, "What is your name?" Yuki was almost about to leave. He turned back, said "Yuki!" and disappeared from sight. Onna just stood there, staring fixedly at the path he took, completely lost in her thoughts.
Her eyes were glued to the spot where he had just been standing. She didn't move an inch. Her mind was racing with questions, trying to process his sudden departure and the intense look in his eyes. There was an unspoken mystery in the way he said his name, leaving a lingering silence behind. Onna kept staring into the empty space, deeply captivated and wondering who this guy really was.
