Chapter 39:

Chapter 39

The day dawned with a gray sky, without a ray of sun, without a white cloud and without the glorious blue stamped over the people. Under that sinister climate Arthur's burial took place, just an empty coffin, as no remains of his body were found. There is nothing left to say that here lies the body that once belonged to a boy, it was just a coffin with nothing inside. His friends were present, two of his colleagues who were saved the day before also came and his father was there too. The priest finishes saying the prayer and they begin to lower the coffin so that he can bury it. At that moment, small drops of rain begin to fall on the sky.

-LIARS!! (Angelica)

Kneeling on the floor with both hands on her chest, the poor girl screamed in rage as she cried out in pain.

-YOU PROMISED ME!! YOU SAID YOU WOULD COME BACK TO ME!!! (Angelica)

Everyone heard her complaints and reacted in the same way, looking at the ground with heavy eyes.

-You said you would come back... snuff... you said you would answer my statement... why?? Why did you leave me here alone?? (Angelica)

Angelica's mother puts a coat over the girl's back as well as placing one of her hands on her shoulder to comfort her. She gets up and is the first to leave the funeral with her mother, the woman who took her away looks at Logan and closes her eyes with her head bowed, as if she's silently speaking my condolences to him. Two soldiers approach Logan after that, the last two soldiers who crossed the trench pass.

-Sir, we just wanted to say that your son was a real hero. If it weren't for him we wouldn't be here right now. (soldier 1)

-We are really grateful to him and we wanted you to know that he was one of the greatest soldiers we have ever witnessed in the field. (soldier 2)

Logan doesn't respond to the two men, just keeps looking at the hole where his son's coffin was buried. Leaning on the shoulder of one of the soldiers was Leon's father and his son beside him crying with his head down, they walked away and left the three to talk alone.

-I'm sorry Logan, is there something we can do for you? (Leon's father)

Logan still doesn't answer a single word.

-Sir, I'm sorry. It's my fault. If I hadn't talked to Arthur like that. If I could convince him to stay... none of this would have happened. (Leon)

Logan looks at the boy who lost his best friend and with dead eyes goes back to looking at the ground.

-I... would like to be alone. (Logan)

Leon's father nods his head showing that he understands his feelings and takes his son and the rest of the guests out of that place leaving only Logan there. The rain starts to pick up and thunder can be heard, but even under such loneliness, Logans eyes dont shed a single tear. He walks back towards his house, but halfway there he enters the park. Walking on it he finds a toy that his son loved to play as a child.

"-Dad! Dad! Look at me!! Hahhahahahh! (Arthur)"

Seeing the vision of his youngest son playing there as if he had gone back in time, he continues walking following that image of his son. Guided by it, he arrives at an ice cream parlor that takes his son after soccer practice.

“-So I caught the ball and kicked it into the goal. The goalkeeper stretched out all the way, but it wasn't enough, so we won the game... (Arthur)”

Sitting on the bench eating ice cream, the image faded and suddenly disappeared. Walking on the sidewalk he went to the school that his son once attended, looking at the door he can see his son leaving through it, this time he was a little bigger and grown up, he notices his father and starts running towards him.

"-Dad! (Arthur)"

Disappearing again before reaching Logan. The man goes on his way in hopes of seeing more of his son. Towards the city cinema he sees a tall young man driving a car out of the cinema, this tall young man was Arthur who was returning home after a night out with his friends. That was two years ago, Logan follows him home. Arriving there he sees the vision of his son entering the door, opening it and entering the house he sees his son with his back to him and wearing the army uniform.

“-I'm sorry dad, but I need to go. (Arthur)"

Arthur walks out the door without looking at Logan and never comes back, disappearing completely, leaving his father alone. Logan begins to have every moment lived with his son suddenly flash through his eyes.

"-Dad! Father. Father... Father! Dad! Dad! I love you! Dad, look here! Dad daddy. Dad! For Dad! Dad? Dad! Dad! (Arthur)"

Her eyes begin to water for the first time since she heard the news that her son was gone.

"-I love you, Dad... (Arthur)"

-AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! (Logan)

Logan starts screaming in pain as he cries, it seems his mind finally understood that his son was gone and would never come back.

-AHHHHHRRRGGGGG!! (Logan)

Logan goes to the vase in the room, he grabs it and hurls it against the wall, shattering it into several pieces. Then he goes to the dinner table where he spent a gratifying time laughing beside his son and turns her around. Enraged he starts to punch the wall, to run his hand over the furniture knocking them to the floor. He goes to the kitchen and picks up the object that used to dry his utensils and kitchen dishes, he throws it hard against the floor making a huge noise of breaking glass and clashing metal. Soon after that he starts kicking his fridge until he gets tired, his euphoria had passed and now all that was left was pain. He puts one of his hands gripping his left chest and with his back leaning against the fridge he slowly lowers to the floor, he atrophies all over and is in a crying position lying on the floor. That day he couldn't do anything but cry and scream because of the pain he was feeling.
