Chapter 936:
En Passant Grandmaster
Present day, Tokyo, Japan...
"Coming to me for help?" Rika smiled as she brought Okisato his order.
"Yeah, there's this guy in this video Inoue-senpai she claims sounds familiar. However, the Ewetube version of it has the sound muted and I can't tell anything by looks alone," Okisato stated.
"So you want to know if maybe I've got something. No guarantees, but I'll give it a go."
As Okisato showed Rika footage of Vasily, Rika began to frown. "He's a new face to me I'm afraid."
"He claims his name is Vasily Asimov. That ring any bells?"
"No, nothing."
"How about any of the others?"
"The bald guy he's playing?"
"Name's Ivo Bogush."
"Nope, nothing. Though some of the girls in the background... never met them personally, but I remember their faces being on the missing persons headlines for weeks, and then later being confirmed dead eventually. It was back while I was still at Tabemono Gakuin, so didn't have as big an info network then as I do now. How important is it you find out who this guy is?"
"At first, it was insignificant, but now, I feel I really need to find out who he is. Do you know anything about Mina Kowalski, one of the girls who went missing?"
"Mmm... Name doesn't sound familiar."
"Here's a glimpse of her in the footage," Okisato nodded as he stopped the footage on a still with Mina in the frame.
Rika stared at the image before her eyes widened. "You have a better quality image of her?"
Okisato nodded and pulled up a search on Mina.
Rika scowled and shook her head. "It's her, huh?"
"You know her!?"
"Not extensively, but I met her a few times at Tabemono. She's the daughter of a hotel tycoon, half-Japanese, half-American. She sure as heck wasn't an athlete, that's for sure, but she was rich and also... fancied herself a Ewetuber..."
Okisato slowly looked up the handle name Rika told him and stared at the screen. "Hardly anything."
"I only know this because off-hand, she mentioned it while I was serving her a dish. She clearly had plans to become a Ewetuber, but then, she went missing. I guess she got swept up in the Sochi conspiracy," Rika frowned.
Okisato nodded and tapped the play button on Mina's final video.
"Hey! I got something big for you! They invited me to an escape game in Russia! Happens right after the Olympics, so I guess it's the event they couldn't fit into the actual broadcast. Anyway, it says it'll be for a few weeks, so no uploads til I'm back," Mina waved.
"A game? Hmm," Okisato scowled as he reached for his food and began gnawing on it.
"Babu!"
Okisato glanced up to notice Yumi playing an old man in a purple tie and hat.
"My, my, you've got such talent for a child so young. Are you old enough to have candy?" the old man smiled.
"Depends I think. But hey, I can always frame the candy," Rika smiled as she walked over.
"Who's this?" Okisato asked.
"Ah, one of our resident chess players, Mr. Dionysius Goiânia. He's 95 years young, and from Brazil, but he's been coming here to play chess ever since the secret puzzle cafe went up. Hear he's actually been playing for over 20 years at a mall in Brazil though with a fellow 95-year old man."
Okisato scanned the man with his WWCF card and nodded. "I think I know who you're talking about. My mother actually took me to Brazil once and while there, we played some old men in chess at a mall. It was nice."
"Yeah, and Mr. Dionysius here can warp, so he can play here or in Brazil each during a single day, er, 24-hour span at least, but not the full 24 hours obviously."
Okisato nodded and decided to put thoughts of Mina on hold as he ate and watched Mr. Dionysius play Yumi. "Sometimes it's nice to just watch some calm chess," he thought.
