Chapter 2:
Life And Dead
For a moment, as we drove past our home, I started questioning everything.
“Why do we have to run from our home?”
“Clint, you understand why we left our house and are going to Salim Province, right?” Hellena replied.
“Yes, I do, sister. But why do we have to go to Salim Province? Wouldn't it be better to go north? They have the anti-magic barrier.”
“Clint, just listen to what Dad said. The North is far more dangerous.”
When she said the word “dangerous,” I started thinking.
What was so dangerous about the North?
The people there were nice. The weather was always sunny. There was almost no poverty. They had free healthcare and good infrastructure.
So what was the dangerous thing Dad was talking about?
Before I could think about it any further, our car suddenly stopped.
There were dozens of cars waiting in front of us.
A military checkpoint.
Soldiers stood beside the road, checking every vehicle that passed through.
Then Dad's phone rang.
He answered it and listened for several minutes.
When the call ended, he looked at Mom.
“Lissa, there's something I need to talk to you about. In private.”
Mom understood immediately.
Both of them stepped out of the car.
I watched them from the window.
“Big bro, what's happening?” Archaun asked. “I don't understand what's going on.”
“Don't worry. Everything's going to be fine.”
I looked at him.
“How about you sleep on Hellena's lap for a while?”
Archaun nodded and climbed onto Hellena's lap.
He quickly fell asleep.
A few minutes later, Mom and Dad returned to the car.
Neither of them said anything about their conversation.
Dad started the engine again.
We slowly passed through the military checkpoint and continued toward Salim.
After a few minutes, Dad finally spoke.
“Clint, I want you to do something when we arrive in the city.”
I looked at him.
“What?”
“I'll tell you when we get there.”
I was confused.
But if Dad wanted me to do something, there had to be a reason.
At least, that's what I hoped.
