Chapter 21:
Naruto: Shadow Clone System
Mission update is live.
Get comfortable. The village is watching.

Naruto woke before sunrise because his legs had filed a complaint in every language muscles knew.
His calves started first. His feet joined in when he stood. His shoulders objected when he reached for the kettle. He ate rice and eggs because breakfast was cheaper than pride, tied his sandals with unnecessary care, and checked the notebook under the floorboard before leaving.
No new plan appeared there. Just scratches of money owed, clone limits, food, sleep, D-rank patterns, and the ugly reminder that loneliness made people easy to steer.
The stamped food-assistance request lay beside it, received but not paid. Rice and eggs were still breakfast because no credit had arrived.
He shut the notebook before the word could turn into a speech.
Training Ground Three was not empty.
That helped.
Mist hung low between the trees, but the clearing already had people in it: two older academy graduates practicing shuriken throws near the far posts, a civilian groundskeeper dragging fallen branches toward a cart, and three Hyuga at the eastern edge where the packed dirt met the grass. Public ground. Public air. No hidden watcher in the trees waiting to become a secret.
Hinata Hyuga stood with the other two, sleeves tied back, feet placed in a narrow stance. She was moving through a breathing drill so quiet it almost looked like stillness. Palm rise. Exhale. Step. Palm turn. Settle. Repeat.
Naruto looked away before looking became a claim.
His tree from yesterday still carried the marks: Sakura's clean cuts higher up, Sasuke's angry gouges, his own uneven ladder trying not to be embarrassing. He set one sandal against the bark and let chakra gather under the sole.
Too much.
He pulled back before the bark cracked.
Again. Less. Exhale. Place.
The foot held.
Second foot. Third. His breath caught at the fourth step, chakra surged, and the cedar kicked him off like it had developed standards overnight. Naruto landed on one knee, hissed, and slapped one hand into the dirt before his shoulder could take the whole insult.
A voice from the eastern edge said, "Your breath stopped before your chakra moved."
Naruto stayed where he was for half a second, because standing too fast would make the advice look like it had hurt.
Then he rose and brushed dirt from his palm. Hinata had stopped at a careful distance. The two Hyuga with her continued their drill as if listening did not count as listening.
"Morning," Naruto said.
"Good morning, Uzumaki-san." Her voice was soft, but the correction had not been. "I apologize. I should have asked before speaking."
"Was it a correction or a warning from the tree's legal representative?"
Her mouth moved like a smile had knocked and been denied entry. "A correction. If you want it."
That mattered.
Naruto let the joke that wanted to answer die before it could make him the center of her permission. "I want it if you want to give it. If you are in the middle of your own training, I can keep losing privately."
Hinata glanced toward the eastern posts. One of the Hyuga trainees saw the glance and went back to palm turns a little too quickly.
"I asked to use the public ground this morning," she said. "Speaking while I practice is also practice."
There was a line in that answer. Small, straight, and hers.
Naruto stepped back from the tree. "Then yes. Please."
She came no closer than an arm's length and pointed to the dirt rather than to his foot. "When you try to lower the chakra, you hold your breath. The flow does not become smaller. It gathers. Then your foot sends it all at once."
"So I am attacking the tree with panic."
"With pressure that has nowhere else to go."
Better. Specific. Not praise. Not worship. A technique problem with a technique answer.
"Sakura said pressure, not force," he said.
Hinata nodded. "That is right. Try making the pressure arrive while you are still exhaling. Not after. If the breath stops, stop your foot too."
Naruto looked at the cedar. "That sounds slower."
"It is."
"Cruel but fair."
This time the smile arrived and stayed for one second.
He set his foot again. Exhale first. Chakra followed, tucked under the sole instead of thrown through it. One step. Second. Third. His ribs tightened at the fourth, but he noticed the breath stop and pulled his foot away before the bark exploded.
He dropped down on purpose.
The landing still stung. The tree remained smug. But the mark was cleaner.
"Less humiliating than the last one," Naruto said.
Hinata looked at the cut in the bark. "It was controlled."
"I will accept that as a diplomatic version."
"It is not diplomacy."
He heard the firmness under the quiet and liked it better than the smile. "Fair. Controlled, then."
At the eastern edge, the older Hyuga trainee stopped pretending. "Hinata-sama, your father assigned paired work."
Not sharp. Not loud. Worse, in its way: formal enough to make obedience sound like weather.
Naruto felt the old impulse rise. Loud joke. Big grin. Become the problem so someone else could breathe.
He kept his mouth shut.
Hinata turned toward the trainee. Her shoulders folded inward by a fraction, then settled again the way her breathing drill had settled them.
"I am doing paired work," she said.
The trainee's pale eyes moved to Naruto, to the tree, to the two marks where his sandals had held.
"With Uzumaki?"
Naruto studied the bark with great interest. The urge to help was not always help. Sometimes it was theft with better manners.
Hinata answered before the silence could bend her. "With a public exercise and a correction I chose to give. I will complete the palm set after this."
The trainee bowed half an inch. Enough to accept the words. Not enough to approve them.
"As you wish, Hinata-sama."
He returned to the eastern posts. Hinata exhaled, slow and nearly soundless.
Naruto waited until her hands unclenched. "I almost made that worse."
She looked at him, surprised.
"I noticed in time," he said.
"Most people do not."
"I am trying to become less most people in one or two areas."
"Breathing first," she said.
He laughed once, because the correction deserved it.
They worked for twenty minutes. Not secretly. Not closely. The groundskeeper passed with his cart twice. The two academy graduates argued about a target score. The Hyuga pair continued their kata. Anyone could see Hinata point to the dirt, Naruto step, fail, reset, and step again.
The publicness made the help cleaner. Nobody owed anyone a private story afterward.
Hinata did not activate the Byakugan. She did not need to. She watched shoulders, ribs, stance, and the tiny delay between decision and movement. When he tried to force the breath into a rhythm that looked better than it felt, she caught that too.
"You changed it for the audience," she said.
Naruto slid down the trunk and landed with both feet. "The audience was judging me."
"The tree was. The rest of us were training."
That one hit politely and still hit.
"Right," he said. "Again."
By the time Sakura arrived, Naruto had six cleaner steps and a new respect for breathing as an enemy with excellent camouflage.
Sakura stopped at the edge of the clearing, pack on one shoulder, hair still damp from a hurried wash. Her eyes went from Hinata to the Hyuga posts, to Naruto's new marks, to the distance between them.
She relaxed a little when she found the distance.
Naruto saw it and made himself not comment. Another small social limit. Look at him, growing like a houseplant that had survived neglect.
"You're early," Sakura said.
"Pain made a persuasive argument."
Hinata bowed. "Good morning, Sakura-san."
"Good morning, Hinata-san." Sakura looked at the tree again. "Are you correcting his footwork?"
"His breathing. Sakura-san's advice about pressure was correct. He stops the breath before the chakra settles."
Sakura's face did something complicated and pleased before she hid it behind analysis. "Of course he does. He turns everything into a shove."
"I am standing right here."
"And breathing wrong."
Hinata's mouth twitched.
Sasuke arrived in time to hear only the last part, which was exactly the sort of luck he respected. "Who is breathing wrong?"
"Apparently I have been promoted from poor chakra control to defective air use," Naruto said.
Sasuke looked at the marks. Then at Hinata. Then at Naruto's stance. "Show it."
No please. No insult either. For Sasuke, that almost counted as a festival.
Hinata shifted, uncertain for the first time since correcting him. Sakura noticed before Naruto did.
"Only if she wants to," Sakura said.
Sasuke's eyes moved to Sakura. The argument started and ended there. He looked back at Hinata. "If you want to."
Hinata nodded once. "I can show the breath. Not clan forms."
"Fine."
The boundary stayed where she put it.
She demonstrated beside the tree: exhale, foot placed while the breath still moved, shoulder quiet, chakra even. She did not climb high. She did not turn herself into spectacle. Two steps, then down.
Sakura watched the shoulders. Sasuke watched the timing. Naruto watched the way Hinata stepped away after finishing, making space before anyone could fill it for her.
Kakashi arrived late enough to preserve tradition and early enough to prove he had been nearby. His book was open. His visible eye took in the Hyuga posts, Sakura's sharpened attention, Sasuke's already irritated concentration, Naruto's cleaner mark, and Hinata's careful distance.
"Public instruction," he said. "How efficient."
Naruto braced.
Kakashi turned a page. "Borrowed corrections go in the report. Clan techniques do not. If anyone asks, Team Seven practiced chakra control in a public training ground and received a breathing note from another genin."
Hinata bowed, small but steady. "Yes, Hatake-sensei."
The rule ended there. No lecture. No wink. No moral polished smooth enough to hang on a wall.
Sakura took her tree. Sasuke took another. Naruto returned to his cedar.
"No clones," Kakashi added without looking up.
"Still remembered," Naruto said.
"I enjoy optimism. I distrust yours."
There was the old rhythm: gap, rule, knife hidden under paper.
Training resumed. Sakura climbed first and descended slower than yesterday, testing the same control in reverse. Sasuke got four steps higher before the bark snapped under a correction made too late. Naruto breathed into the first step, then the second, then the third, and stopped at five because his calf began shaking in a way that promised injury if ignored.
Stopping on purpose still felt like losing.
It also let him stand for the next try.
Hinata returned to her palm set after the third round. She did not stay beside him. She did not wait for approval. When her trainee partner tried to quicken the count, she corrected him in the same quiet voice she had used on Naruto.
Right, Naruto thought, then caught the word before it turned into a verdict.
Not his verdict.
Just true.
Near midday, Kakashi closed his book. "Enough. Tomorrow, D-ranks. Carry the breathing with you when boredom tries to make you careless."
Sakura groaned. Sasuke looked personally offended by the existence of weeds he had not yet met. Naruto wiped bark dust from his hands and looked across the clearing.
Hinata was packing her own kunai pouch. She looked tired. Also steadier than when the morning started.
Naruto raised two fingers in a small wave. No invitation. No promise. No secret.
Hinata returned it, then turned back to her team.
The mark Naruto left on the cedar stayed where it was: a little higher, a little cleaner, earned in public, helped by someone who had not been claimed by the help she gave.
That felt more difficult than power.
Probably healthier too.
