Chapter 44:
Duel Narrative: Blessed Days of Cursed Knights
They found themselves in a grand reception hall.
The grand doors were blown from their hinges, drowning the throne room in sunlight that illuminated shattered windows and broken columns.
The floor was shattered, and scorch marks and ashes lay beneath light blankets of snow and frost.
Sitting on his throne was the Dragon Tyrant himself. He was a huge figure even in his human form, about seven feet tall and the shoulder width of a dresser. He wore dark regal clothes, draped over with an emperor’s cloak
Like Elori’sha, his body barely decomposed. Almost felt like we had walked in on him resting, an illusion that was dismissed when taking the lance into account.
He had been impaled by an elegant silver lance, which had driven deep into his chest and through the back of the throne.
“So they really did take him by surprise.” Enderan frowned to himself. “Is that Vikrum’s lance?”
“It’s your father’s.”
“Heaven Piercer?!” Enderan walked closer to see the white silver metal with gold ornamentals. “I thought that it was Vikrum who led the assault.”
“He did. Except Ezrian was the one to finish it.”
Looking around at the destroyed throne room, I could only imagine how the fight played out.
“But why leave it here?”
“I assume it’s because he felt like his days of dragon slaying were done. But if I were to see this in a more practical light, “it’s because your father wanted to make sure he remained stuck here, just to be on the safe side.”
“Is this a guess or do you really know?”
“It’s a guess.”
Victor didn’t give a reason to why Ezrian left his lance stuck into the throne. Victor just thought it would be a cool scene where Ezrian finds a new weapon.
But after witnessing the Dragon Queen’s resurrection, that lance might be the reason why he hasn’t awakened as a vengeful spirit yet.
“Before beginning the ritual, we need to pull free the lance.”
They approached the body. The Dragon Tyrant was even more threatening up close, even as a corpse.
A dragon’s body didn’t decompose like the human bodies. The muscle and fat beneath the scales probably had withered but the it made the dragon corpses shrunken in rather than rotted.
Enderan stood, observing the lance up close.
“Go ahead. It belonged to your father after all.”
Enderan stepped up and placed a foot against the throne and pulled with his one arm. Yoki, wrapped itself around Enderan’s hand and the lance. They pulled together, then Victor added his strength to the effort.
Just when it seemed like it wouldn’t budge, Enderan’s eyes glowed and infused his body with the new abundance of mana in his body and freed Heaven Piercer.
“How does it work?”
“If you put mana into it, it should activate the enchantment in the lance. That will cause the end point to glow bright and sharp. “Once you thrust hard enough, it will unleash its titular attack.”
Enderan tried to hold it up, but it was too heavy. He infused his body with mana and swung the lance with more efficiency.
“It’s up to you whether or not you want to use it in case we have to fight.”
Victor had filled him in on more of the plan. They were going to resurrect him in a perfect state. This meant dragging every part of him out of the nightmare realm and into a repaired vessel.
It was going to require an amount of mana that only a handful of beings could supply on their own.
Enderan was now one of them.
Victor placed his bag on the floor and began making three circles.
He opened his tome and began copying the sigils and patterns illustrated.
After finishing the circle, Victor felt a pang, and watched words appear on the page.
I still don’t know what your plan is here ~
Victor closed his the book. “Enderan, help me move the body.”
Victor took off Drakan’thar’s crown and observed it. It was an elegant golden crown embedded with dark crimson gems.
“How much is that crown worth do you think?” Enderan asked.
Victor let out a great big laugh. “Ha! I could only imagine the wealth. A collector might pay a pretty penny for this relic of legend.” He set it aside while they got in position.
He and Enderan lifted the Dragon Tyrant’s body which weighed a ton. Enderan ended up lifting most of the weight with his new strength.
“Wow, just how strong did you get?”
“I’m not sure, but this much power is crazy. Imagine if I had two arms!” He set it down with hardly any effort. “Looks like eating the egg was worth it.”
Victor looked away and down at the circle. “You know, Enderan, you are too gullible.”
Enderan was taken aback. “What do you mean?”
Victor gave him a condescending glance, followed by an exaggerated sigh. “Look at what you’re doing! Trust me or not, we’re bringing back one of history’s biggest villains, and you’re following my orders willingly!”
“Not without reservation! And isn’t that what you wanted this entire trip?!”
“I mean yeah, but if I were watching you do this with anyone else, I would be freaking out that you were following the orders of some evil cultist!”
Enderan looked down at the ritual circle and the dead villain of legend. He laughed awkwardly to himself. “Now that you point it out, this does look really bad. But your goal isn’t to bring back Drakan’thar from the dead so he can rule, right?”
“Of course not.” Victor smiled. “We’re going to kick his ass again if we can’t get him to break your curse.”
“So we’re really going to try and negotiate with him?”
“It won’t hurt to try. But the second things start looking bad, we’re destroying him.” Victor said. “I have some other ideas to break your curse if this doesn’t work out. That locked room we saw might have something. So if it comes down to a fight, don’t hold back.”
“All right. I won’t.”
Victor nodded, while trying to keep back a pained expression.
Victor took out the crown and knelt by the dragon king. He put back the crown atop Drakan’thar’s head, and set two crystals held up by little metal holders.
“What are those?”
“They help concentrate most of the mana here. The head is where most of this spell needs to be focused on.”
“I see.”
Two of the three circles laid beneath the body. The smallest was beneath his head. It had the most intricate of the sigils and patterns.
The second and biggest circle encompassed everything from his shoulders to his feet. Then a line connected to third smaller circle below.
“All right Enderan, suffuse that circle with mana.”
